Libraries | Umberto Eco, Candida H๖fer
35 posts | 1 read | 16 to read
Nobody photographs libraries, those splendid and intimate cathedrals of knowledge, as beautifully as Candida Hofer. Her photographs are sober and restrained in feel- the atmosphere is disturbed by neither visitors nor users, especially as she forgoes any staging of the locations. The emptiness is imbued with substance by a subtle attention to colour, and the prevailing silence instilled with a metaphysical quality that gives voice to the objects, over and above the eloquence of the furnishings or the pathos of the architecture. This volume contains Hofer's famously ascetic images of the British Library in London, the Escorial in Spain, the Whitney Museum and the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York, the Bibliotheque nationale de France in Paris, the Villa Medici in Rome and the Hamburg University Library, among others. Umberto Eco introduces the collection with a witty reflection on the role of libraries in all our lives.

My husband is a carpenter working in some very upscale homes and took me to look at his latest job. This house is incredible! While he was closing up, I explored the library. This is a relatively powerful and respected financial leader in New England (the opposite of me๐Ÿ˜‚) but our book tastes? Identical! I kept saying โ€œI read that! I read that!โ€ I‘ve found my new best book loving friend whom I‘ll never meet! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ Kind of like Litsy TBH! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

rwmg So husband says to homeowner, "Do you need someone to help you catalogue and expand your library?" 8mo
Readergrrl I have to admit @rwmg to being more than a little jealous: dark wood, fireplace, rolling ladder, huge soft leather chairs, with a floor to ceiling window looking out across the mountains, but most of the books were clearly well-loved and worn, lots of thrift and library sale books, very well loved children‘s books clearly from their own kids to children‘s books that must have belonged to the owners. Absolute heaven! 8mo
BooknerdsLife Wow! I‘d love to have books loving friends in real life like that with beautiful library at home so I could visit them all the time! ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ“š But I‘m grateful for all the books loving friends Ive met here on Litsy & on Instagram too ๐Ÿค—๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿ“š 8mo

Megabooks @Cinfhen No libraries in Israel?? If so, that just seems so different!! 9mo
Cinfhen No, they have libraries but it kind of ends there. The selections in English are minimal and rather old, you can only check out 2 books (๐Ÿ˜ณ) on your account and there is no online requesting or interloan system in place. I spoke to a librarian and a lot has to do with publishing rights ๐Ÿ˜ฌ๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ˜ฃ 9mo
Megabooks @Cinfhen Wow! Two books, no online, no interlibrary loan. Smh! Get with it Israel!! I can imagine why they have a small English section. I‘m sure you hear many languages everyday in addition to Hebrew. I‘d miss American libraries, too! 9mo

1๏ธโƒฃ What kind of library? The answer is different if it's a local library or a rare books library. As a patron of research libraries, I'd say I'd save whatever book I'm pouring over at that time.

Ok you guys, this is embarrassing. I've lived in my current apartment for two years and have just discovered that there's a library a 15 min walk away ?. It's small and there isn't a huge fiction selection, but I'll take it! Operation "spend less" is looking up!

JaclynW @dariazeoli Thanks! I'm going to have to look into this. I get frustrated by my local library online situation. I'm often 20th, 40th, or 70th person in line for an ebook or audio book. Saw this on Reddit. Apparently, a library near Syracuse, NY , has posted this in the Teen Section of the library. They feel that if a teen may be dealing with a difficult issue, they‘d probably never ask a librarian where to find info on it. So they made it a bit easier for them. Some parents disapprove, thinking the child should come to them to ask for advice, not look up answers in library books. Whatcha think about this ?

kelseynicburke I think it‘s a great idea. If they‘re looking for answers in books and they‘re not finding them, there‘s a good chance they‘re just going to go on not knowing them. These are all things that would be very hard for a teenager to talk to a parent about, especially if they weren‘t ready. 2y
RaimeyGallant It's great, though probably needs to be expanded. 2y
Kaye I think it‘s great that the kids can look for info if they are having problems or questions on how to deal with a specific issue. I think the number of teens that could ask their parents about personal issues is pretty slim. 2y
See All 32 Comments
DrJAdMerricksson That's awesome 2y
Sace And what do parents think of internet search engines? 2y
HelloImJez I feel that some parents need to realise they can't and won't be able to have control over everything. I find that the parents who rally against this sort of thing are some of the same parents liable to react negatively to their child coming to them for advice for something like this. I'm all for this lil list, anything to make it easier for teens to cope/live. 2y
goodreadsandme Love it. As a sexual abuse survivor, I would not have had the courage to ask for help from a stranger. 2y
Notafraidofwords When I was a child, I realized that I couldn‘t come to parents for certain things. They just wouldn‘t know how to handle this. So, this would have been really helpful. 2y
EchoLogical This is fantastic! I wish I could post this in my library. 2y
JenlovesJT47 I think it's a great idea! 2y
Betty @EchoLogical couldn't you ask your library? 2y
Betty @RaimeyGallant what would you add to the list to expand this? 2y
EchoLogical @Betty I work there in the children's dept and I know the youth services librarian would shut it down immediately and the head of the parks and rec would back her. We tried to post about net neutrality on our Facebook page and he made us delete our post, twice, saying that the library needs to stay away from anything "controversial." ? 2y
Kaye @Echological Awhile back, some of our local libraries had some problems, not about this same thing, but many parents were coming in irate over a book their kid might have checked out that they didn‘t approve of. The librarians kept telling these people that We Are Not Babysitters For Your Kids. I agree with them, I don‘t think the library should have to police the books people check out. They ended up making Family Library Cards, for those 2y
Kaye -cont. that felt their kid‘s reading material be monitored. I never told my kids what they were or weren‘t allowed to read. I think when they get to a certain age, they should be able to read whatever they want. 2y
Chelleo I love this idea. One thing that I think would be helpful would be to include this Tough Topics section with other topics because as a standalone it's pretty obvious that they are looking at these particular set of issues. I know I would have been very anxious to be found reading this list if others were around. 2y
EchoLogical @Kaye We let parents know that when they get their children library cards, they're responsible for what they check. We say it in reference to damaged items but it seems to motivate them to pay closer attention to what's being checked out. Policing what people read is essentially counterintuitive to what libraries stand for, you know? Lol. Of course, we all have our opinions on what's "suitable" but ultimately we're here to provide access 2y
TrishB As a parent, as long as your kid‘s getting some help and support I think that‘s the important point. I have never censored what my kids read. 2y
AmyG I think it's an excellent idea. I never went to ask my parents. My daughter is a school counselor in a K-8. She tells me all the time how parents expect the school to do much of the parenting for them. @HellolmJez agree with you about parents. Good point. 2y
Kaye @Echological I agree completely. What about this scenario ? This was many years ago...maybe 15 or 20.... at least. 2 middle school boys came in to ask the librarian to do an inter-library loan ( from Cleveland) to order a book on how to build a pipe bomb. She refused to order it. This was long before all the violence in our world now, but would you feel any responsibility to contact their families? Or do librarians have a code of silence thing? 2y
Scurvygirl I love this idea. Many teens have parents that they feel are unapproachable (like I did) and wouldn‘t understand how they feel. This could be a steppingstone for them to get the help or information they need. 2y
Laura317 It‘s a directory to help find what is already there. I think it‘s very helpful to anyone (not just kids) that might be dealing with these issues. I‘m for it. 2y
SkeletonKey Excellent idea. Silencing these issues doesn't make the issues themselves disappear. Wish we could put it in my library as well. 2y
EchoLogical @Kaye I probably would've asked my director how to handle it but I think there's a loophole I could've used to notify the parents. When kids put items on hold, we call to let them know when they're in. I would've called the home number on file. 2y
BethM I love this. 2y
MiyakoBunny Great idea ๐Ÿ’ก๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผโค๏ธ 2y
[DELETED] 57804897 I think it‘s excellent. 2y
Aloisi_tribe Parents are delusional if they think their kids are going to come to them with some of these issues. I'm grateful for any place like this that offers good, helpful, correct information to teens that are obviously going through hard times. 2y
RaimeyGallant @EchoLogical Sorry, five different convos at once. The Internet is the world's free online library, so definitely a parallel with the net neutrality issue. (edited) 2y
RaimeyGallant @Betty Off the top of my head, the list picks out a couple of self-harming topics, but there are gaps. Was bullying on the list? Cyber issues? 2y

My state, Connecticut, hasn't been able to pass a budget. The Governor's proposed budget is looking to cut funding to local libraries. These cards are from kids from ages 8 - 13 advocating against these cuts. I love the graphics and their letters to their senator is so inspiring. It makes me so sad but at the same time proud to see our young kids fighting for what they believe & advocating for libraries.

Laura317 Makes me sad children are having to write, but glad they have parents who've raised them to fight! 3y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Kids need libraries! It's too bad they have to fight already. ๐Ÿ˜ญ 3y

Can I just talk about how much I love my library? Not only do we have a bookmobile but now there's a machine at the gym where I can pick up my holds!! My husband asked if I would be going to the gym more often now. Cuz other than free food, this could be the motivation I was looking for! I haven't had a chance to use it yet so I'm putting stuff on hold today. I'm so excited!! ๐Ÿ˜†

Zelma Very cool! I recently traveled through Seattle and they had a digital library kiosks in the airport (ebooks and audios). Free two-day lending on a set number of books for non-residents too. 3y

angrylilasian @LectricSheep I haven't picked up yet but it looks like when my hold comes in, I scan my card and my book is dispensed. Like a free book vending machine!! 3y

Saw this at my local library today. A local artist designed it for the library using the library's acronym. I hope there's stickers.

#TBRtemptation post 1! This is an amazingly gorgeous coffee table book that combines libraries with one of the best photographers in the world. CH traveled all over the US & Europe to capture these magnificent images--the Escorial, the Whitney Museum's, the Villa Medici, the Pierpont, the Bibliotheque nationale de France, etc. And all of her pictures have zero people, for that glow of serenity and calm. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook ๐Ÿ˜Ž
