Trying to catch up on my #BOTMBacklog (and the annual #BOTMChallenge) before the 12/26 deadline! This debut novel, set in 1995 Lansing, MI makes for a a quick and compelling read! On the cusp of turning eleven, narrator KB and her older sister Nia spend the summer with their Granddaddy in this coming-of-age story. I loved the many references to Anne of Green Gables and KB‘s insatiable curiosity. It touches on some heavy topics but handled well!

TorieStorieS @AmyG Haha!! Exactly why he‘s practicing early!! Though not pictured are the initial efforts to bite the book! Bribery is already working though! 🤣 4mo

The Keep | Jennifer Egan

I‘m having a little gothic/horror weekend. ☠️

The Keep is a gothic revenge tale about two cousins and a castle in Europe. Tagged ⬆️

Hide is a thriller/horror tale about a girl playing a game of survival in an amusement park. Tagged ⬇️

Hidden Pictures is supernatural horror about a kid being haunted in a house in New Jersey. He draws increasingly disturbing pictures for his babysitter. Tagged ⬇️

vivastory Thanks for the tag! Both Keep & Hidden Pictures are on my TBR. I've seen Hide floating around social media the past few days but I didn't know what it was about. Sounds good. Adding it to my TBR 📚📚📚 2y

Megabooks @vivastory I‘m pleased with how much I‘m enjoying HP! His debut was a surprise pick for me, and I‘m liking this even more. About 33% in. I just started The Keep now that I have a moment to sit down. (The other two are audiobooks.) Hide is up after HP. I‘ll tag you in my reviews if you want. 👍🏻👍🏻 2y
vivastory I'd def like to see your reviews! I appreciate it! I have Impossible Fortress on my TBR shelves. I was recently thinking of reading it. I just placed a hold on HP at my library. Premise of Hide reminds me a bit of the following, which I meant to read last fall & didn't get around to 2y
vivastory And apparently full contact haunted houses is a real thing?! I can't even process it...😬 😱 2y
Cinfhen You‘ve gone from #MemoirGirl to #HorrorGirl - what‘s going on ?!?! 😝😜😘all three sound ghoulishly good 2y
Megabooks @vivastory I have heard of full contact haunted houses, and I just don‘t think I could do it!! 2y
Megabooks @vivastory it looks like reviews on Reprieve are mixed on here. I‘ll probably wait to see what you think because we often agree. Impossible Fortress was different than anything I read that year in a good way. (I read it for the #BotmChallenge. I‘m not sure I would‘ve picked it up otherwise, but I‘m glad it put him on my radar.) 2y
Megabooks @Cinfhen only one memoir so far this month! It just seemed like I needed a good scaring this weekend! 👻 2y
squirrelbrain Ew, too much horror for me! 🤣 2y
Megabooks @squirrelbrain lol! It‘s like an itch I have to scratch sometimes! 😂☠️ 2y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Hidden Pictures had me at New Jersey. 2y

Had a really good reading night!

I‘m reading the tagged book in print for #sciencebookbyawoman for #booked2021. So far I‘m really enjoying it even though light-based physics is my worst science subject. (Only B I got in a pre-vet science!)

Also, why didn‘t I read Priestdaddy on audio for the #botmchallenge back in 2017?? Such a great #audiobook so far! She has a novel coming out in February.

#currentlyreading

Cinfhen I don‘t know why but I couldn‘t get into Priestdaddy 🤷🏼‍♀️Glad you‘re loving both your current books 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I just find her dysfunctional relationship with her parents funny right now! 😉😉 3y
Cinfhen I can see the humor in that 3y

emilyhaldi Ooohhh thanks for the heads up about her new book! 3y
emilyhaldi .... Priestdaddy seems like it would be an awesome book on audio!! Glad you liked it 😁 3y
MsMelissa I‘m looking forward to reading The End of Everything. Can‘t wait for your review. 3y
Reviewsbylola Priestdaddy on audio would be awesome. Good idea! 3y
Megabooks @emilyhaldi I‘m excited about her new book! I first saw it on a bookstore‘s Instagram last fall. It comes out the day after I get my Libro.fm credit, so that‘s probably where it‘s going to be spent (to support that bookstore, too)! 3y
Megabooks @Book_Fiend_Melissa it is really fascinating, and I find I‘m much more engaged with the material than other astrophysics books I‘ve read, including popular ones like 3y
Megabooks @Reviewsbylola it‘s definitely awesome! 3y
Magpiegem I loved Priestdaddy so much on Audio I found it unexpectedly touching in places. Enjoy! 3y
MsMelissa I‘m glad to read you feel that it‘s better than some other similar books. That‘s encouraging. 3y
kspenmoll Priestdaddy!!!💕💕💕 3y

This was one of the first #BOTM books I got 3 years ago. I‘m hoping to meet my goal of catching up completely by the end of the year. Wish me luck, only 33 to go! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Anyhoo, this wasn‘t terrible for a debut and it had so much potential, but ultimately was very predictable imo. Not so bad I wouldn‘t give another of her books a try. 3⭐️

Gissy One book less! Keep going!📚👍 4y
MicheleinPhilly 33??? I feel so much better about my BOTM backlog now so thanks. 😉 4y
Megabooks I read this as part of the #BOTMchallenge and agree that it was mediocre. 4y

JenlovesJT47 @Gissy thank you!! 🤗 I hope you‘re doing well 😘 4y
JenlovesJT47 @MicheleinPhilly I‘ve already read 28 so far this year so you see how far behind I got!! 😱 But my problem is a book-buying problem — I usually get at least 2 a month, and there have been several months where I got 3 😬 4y
JenlovesJT47 @Megabooks yep!! Too bad because it could have been great. 4y

There is some Litsy love for this book,I snapped it up on a Kindle daily deal.Imagine a place not beautiful, but a social experiment.Maybe you‘re a criminal or a witness to a crime, if you agree to live in this town & get your memories erased, you get a new name , a new start. An exciting read w/ many twists & turns , when things start to unravel , I was glad I was there to enjoy the ride.Darkly humorous w/ moral dilemmas & interesting characters.

vivastory I really liked this one 4y
Leftcoastzen @vivastory it was very good ! I liked it a lot! 4y
Cinfhen This was a great book 💕 4y

The reference to Nothing to See Here was the highlight of this book for me. I expected so much and the premise was good (two parents who are willing to sacrifice all for their art, even their children who are part of their performance), but unfortunately I didn‘t care for the characters nor the art nor the lives of the children as adults.

Megabooks His best book is Nothing to See Here, so I‘m hoping his books get better and better. Fang was 3.5⭐️ for me. 4y
BarbaraBB @Megabooks I heard his backlist was good too so I thought I‘d try but now I will wait for a new work! 4y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB Fang is his second best. He had a sophomore slump with this one that I‘m tagging. I enjoyed it mostly because I like the narrator and read the audiobook. It was part of my #BOTMchallenge in 2017. 4y

This is not the book if you want to know why someone would disappear into the woods for 27 years when he was 20 years old. It remains unclear but what makes this book so compelling is the how and what our society does with someone who really seems to want to be removed from humanity when what he has done to survive is a crime. I thought Finkel did a great job in telling this real tale that perhaps could only have happened in Maine‘s woods.

Reviewsbylola I wasn‘t interested in this book at all but read it because it was a BOTM selection the year i was doing #botmchallenge. I ended up not wanting to put it down. I loved it! 4y
SamAnne I would not have picked it up if it hadn‘t been a book club read. I couldn‘t stop listening. And we had a great club discussion on our discomfort over the actions of the writer and boundaries he may have crossed in the telling. 4y
akfreeborn @SamAnne I was conflicted about the writer‘s role in the story as well. It is a complicated issue, saw it in Bad Blood and even Henrietta Lacks but I‘m still glad for what was discovered and reported. 4y

I kind of liked this one. The two lying women and the boy in between. Both of the women make one stupid decision after the other and it‘s frustrating to read, I wanted to tell them what to do more than once. It‘s a good thing when a book does that, when it has such an effect on you. Especially these days it is good to be frustrated about something else beside our health and situation.

Megabooks I liked this too. I read it for the #botmchallenge 👍🏻 4y
KarenUK I liked it too... was a #BOTM pick for me.... 4y

I first read this for the #botmchallenge back in 2017, and it‘s been in storage. I wanted to do a reread and found it on Scribd.

I thought this was wonderful in 2017, little did I know that it would be the first in a looong line of 80s-born millennial first-person essays. Now, I‘m tired of them.

I can‘t deny this one, most of them really, aren‘t well written and interesting, but it just doesn‘t seem as fresh as it did then. 4⭐️

Reviewsbylola Yeah I really didn‘t like this one. 4y
Megabooks @Reviewsbylola I remember that. I almost tagged the whole gang! We had fun. 👍🏻💖 4y

Cinfhen I remember reading this one and LOVING it!!! Even though on paper the author and I had nothing alike our families traditions, customs and dynamics were incredibly similar. I thought she was honest, funny and had a good eye for absurdity. Glad to know her collection held up on the re-read 4y
Megabooks @Cinfhen it definitely is one of the best first-person essays of its type. The only one I liked more was this one I‘m tagging. And as far as true memoirs, T Kira Madden‘s takes the cake!! But I don‘t get the obsession, in every collection it seems, with weddings. Then again, I‘m not a wedding fan in general. 4y
Cinfhen I‘ve added your recommendation because you do not steer me wrong... EVER!!! And YESSSSSSS, I am such a fan of (edited) 4y
Megabooks @Cinfhen awesome!! I hope you enjoy it!! 😁😁 4y
Cinfhen It‘s available on Scibd !!! I‘ll be adding it to my week‘s listens....thanks 😘 4y
Megabooks @Cinfhen 😁💖😘🎧 4y
Megabooks @Cinfhen are you still reading Saint X? I‘m three hours in now and riveted! 4y
Cinfhen I know!!!! It‘s sooo good but I‘m out with hubby and I can‘t listen to the audio 😩😩😩I cant wait to get back home 4y
Cinfhen I JUST got home!!!! We were out ALL day 😡 4y
Megabooks @Cinfhen yikes!! 👎🏻👎🏻 It is evening there now. Maybe bath and (audio)book? 💙 4y
Cinfhen After I prepare dinner...I‘m taking a shower and getting into bed with Saint X 💘 4y
