Here are some statistics I tracked for my reading in 2021. The audio books definitely got me through the year.

Sorry these are kind of hard to read! (The exporting from Excel is not great. Or, more likely, I don‘t know what I‘m doing.)

Daisey I always love seeing the different graphs people share of their reading! 2y

I‘m sharing my July Reading Stats from the Storygraph app. I‘m finding it very satisfying to look at my stats every month. It‘s interesting to see which genres I‘ve read more of and which genres I want to read more of. I like to read different genres but I‘m finding that there‘s some genres that I don‘t read a lot of.

#Bookly Weekly Reading Report
January 31 - February 6, 2021

Wow! I really slowed down last week. The only two things I went up on were number of quotes I added and the number of words I added. No big deal — it‘s not a race, it‘s supposed to be fun.

This is the first time since lockdown were I felt I read at nearly a normal rate for me. Still days were work exhausted me that much I couldn‘t really read at night, but overall much better.
I have some time off at points in August so hopefully will carry on 😁

My #FebStats:

11 books, 9 fiction, 2 non-fiction.

Best - difficult to say as several 5⭐️ reads for different reasons. The last few Morse novels were Colin Dexter at the top of his game, The Book of Echoes is a stunning debut from Rosanna Amaka.

Worst - The Dilemma was awful.

Shockingly bad diversity with 8 British white male authors, 1 American white male, one British white female and 1 British female PoC.

5 of 5: BOOKS BY PUBLICATION
So this spread remains largely consistent year-to-year. I do love reading new releases. But I would like to improve that pre-2000 number this year.

How was your reading year?

twohectobooks Love all of your stats! As a spreadsheet lover I‘ve been tracking more and more things like this as the years go by, I think publication year is something I‘m going to add in to my tracking as well. 4y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Averaging about 9-10% a year is great... it adds up over time, so I think you‘re doing great! 4y
thebluestocking @twohectobooks Thank you!! I‘d love to hear about the categories you track. I‘ve only tracked publication date for the last three years, but I think it‘s an interesting one to see. 💙 4y
thebluestocking @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Thank you for that perspective! You‘re right that all of it adds up over time. 💙 4y

4 of 5: BOOKS BY RATING
Exactly 50% of the books I read this year were 4-stars, which is actually kind of great. 4-star books are really good books, and I had a bump in 5-star reads as well.

(On Litsy, for me, books with 4 or 5 stars get a “pick,” books with 3 stars are “so-so,” and books with 1 or 2 stars get a “pan.” That means 65% of my 2019 books were picks!)

Ruthiella 65% is pretty good! 4y

2 of 5: BOOKS BY OWNER
The trend of me buying less books continues. Actually, I haven‘t run the exact numbers on my buying, but I am absolutely leaning toward borrowing most books before considering buying them. (In 2015, 88% of the books I read I owned and that number has fallen each year since.)

LiteraryinLawrence I totally support that trend! I also try to borrow from the library unless it‘s an author whose book I know I‘m going to want to own. 4y
thebluestocking @LiteraryinLititz Right? That‘s where I am now, but I used to want to own every book I read. Not enough room or monies! 🤷‍♀️💙 4y

Happy New Year, Littens! I love tracking my reading stats and comparing year to year. So, my next few posts are a look at my 2019 reading by the numbers.

#2019stats
1 of 5: BOOKS BY FORMAT
This year saw a huge jump in my audiobook consumption. I do not know why, other than I spend a lot of time in the car and have access to great audiobooks through the library. My ebook ratio was about the same, but the physical books dropped a ton.

Scochrane26 I think I read more audio this yr because of Libby & having apple CarPlay. I also found more books through Littens. 4y
thebluestocking @Scochrane26 Ooh. All three of those reasons apply to me as well! 💙 (edited) 4y

thebluestocking @Lindy Thank you! I love that Litsy is a place for things like this. 💙 4y
speljamr Oh, I love this kind of stuff. What are you using to produce these graphs? 4y
Daisey I‘ve been scrolling through all your stats posts and there is a lot of info here! Great graphs and comparisons. I may need to add a couple columns to my tracking spreadsheet. I‘ve also seen my audio continually increasing the last few years. 4y
thebluestocking @speljamr Me too! I compile the data and make the pie charts in Excel. And then I compiled the collages in the PicsArt app. 💙 (edited) 4y
thebluestocking @Daisey Thank you!! I love tracking book stats too. I‘d love to hear about your categories. I tried adding setting to mine this year and did not keep up with it well. And it‘s interesting that audiobooks are up for you too; I‘m really interested to see if it continues this year for me. 💙 4y
Daisey My stats are pretty basic, with emphasis on book source and format, but I like the idea of tracking more about publication and authors. 4y
thebluestocking @Daisey Book source is one that I would like to add to my tracking this year. I usually try to put why I read it, but adding the source (and the cost) would be nice data to have. 💙 4y

I‘ve only tracked publication dates for the last two years, but I was surprised how heavily my reading tends toward the new and the shiny. More than 90% of the books I‘ve been reading have been published in the last 20 years. In 2019, I want to increase the ratio of older books.

4 of 5: BOOKS BY RATING
My ratings tend to naturally fall along these same ratios year after year. For me, 5-star books are usually amazing or life-changers, which are rare, 4-star books are great, which are most of what I read, and 3-star reads are so-so, which are not uncommon. I rarely finish 1- and 2-star reads.

(On Litsy, for me, a “pan” is a 1 or 2 star, a “so-so” is a 3 star, and a “pick” is a 4 or 5 star.).”

CindyMyLifeIsLit Is this something you created or is there an app for that? 😁 5y

3 of 5: BOOKS BY GENRE
Nonfiction used to be consistently less than 10% of what I read. I specifically set out to change that and am happy it was a quarter of my reading this year. My YA reading has changed a lot too. At the height, it was around 25% of my books read, but I prefer it to be a much smaller portion of my reading life.

(I did not separate out graphic novels or poetry in years past.)

An interesting month - my kids picked all month. Half of them had been on the tbr for quite a long time!! And they didn‘t let me read a thriller until nearly the end of the month 🤷‍♀️ they obviously have something against them!!

My 2017 Stats:

82 total books
I'd give you the detailed breakdown but the numbers aren't adding up and it's after midnight so I'm tired. But I do know that 63% of these books were authored by women and 29% by POC. Sadly 30% were written by white men--far too high a number when I set out last January to make that number 0%. I think I'll set a more doable but low number for 2018.

I finally had some time to sit down and calculate my 2016 reading statistics. I'm happy to say that I was happy that I managed to hit my two goals - 33% by writers of color and 50% by women! I had a bunch of favorites, but these three were at the top of my lists. I was surprised looking back that 2016 was also the year that I read all of Saga, so I had to mention that, too!

EvieBee Great stats! What is the backlist category? 7y
JessReads @EvieBee84 Anything that wasn't published in 2016 (but that I read in 2016). Since I read so much frontlist now (because of my job as a bookseller and my access to great NYC libraries), I thought it was worth breaking out the two categories. 7y
