April was a hard month. My reading pace slowed, and I‘m behind on #LitsyLove replies. Hopefully, I‘ll feel better soon and can get back on track!

I finished 7 books in April:

Ebook - 6
Audiobook - 1

I have 2 in progress that will carry into May.

I finished the #mmdchallenge this month. #modernmrsdarcy

I read 3 books for #Booked2019.

#2018stats
5 of 5: BOOKS BY PUBLICATION
I‘ve only tracked publication dates for the last two years, but I was surprised how heavily my reading tends toward the new and the shiny. More than 90% of the books I‘ve been reading have been published in the last 20 years. In 2019, I want to increase the ratio of older books.

#2018stats
4 of 5: BOOKS BY RATING
My ratings tend to naturally fall along these same ratios year after year. For me, 5-star books are usually amazing or life-changers, which are rare, 4-star books are great, which are most of what I read, and 3-star reads are so-so, which are not uncommon. I rarely finish 1- and 2-star reads.

(On Litsy, for me, a “pan” is a 1 or 2 star, a “so-so” is a 3 star, and a “pick” is a 4 or 5 star.).”

CindyMyLifeIsLit Is this something you created or is there an app for that? 😁 7mo
thebluestocking @CindyMyLifeIsLit I created the pie charts in Excel and then did the collages in PicsArt. I haven‘t found an app that will do pie charts. 7mo

#2018stats
3 of 5: BOOKS BY GENRE
Nonfiction used to be consistently less than 10% of what I read. I specifically set out to change that and am happy it was a quarter of my reading this year. My YA reading has changed a lot too. At the height, it was around 25% of my books read, but I prefer it to be a much smaller portion of my reading life.

(I did not separate out graphic novels or poetry in years past.)

2 of 5: BOOKS BY OWNER
This is one area of my reading life that has shifted substantially over the last few years. I used to like to own every book I‘ve read. In 2015, 88% of the books I read I owned. I‘m pleased to see that this year, for the first time, most of my books were borrowed, either from the library or from friends.

I love tracking and reviewing statistics about my reading each year. So the next few posts are a look at my 2018 reading by the numbers.

#2018stats
1 of 5: BOOKS BY FORMAT
As you can see, I naturally read about the same ratio of book formats year to year. I just track this particular data to observe, not to change my behavior.

Have you all seen this new stat section on Goodreads My Stats page? Month by month bar graph of how many books you read and if you click any bar, a handy pop-up of titles comes up! (And look you can see exactly where I had horrible all day morning sickness and too exhausted to read when I was last pregnant in 2015 😂)l

LauraJ Will have to check this out. 7mo

Finished my last June book on train yesterday.
An interesting month - my kids picked all month. Half of them had been on the tbr for quite a long time!! And they didn‘t let me read a thriller until nearly the end of the month 🤷‍♀️ they obviously have something against them!!

JennyM You are a definite book dragon...so many books in one month 😄 Your kids‘ choices have been good to watch. Hope Durham uni trip yesterday went well. Such a lovely campus x 13mo
Kalalalatja Well done! Do you have an estimate of how many of your kids‘ picks were great reads, and how many were meh? 13mo
Bookwomble That's almost half my total for the year so far! You're a book wizard, Trish! 🧙‍♀️ 13mo

TrishB @JennyM they‘ve put a few on their piles for the summer - which is always good 😁 I thought Durham was lovely - but I‘m trying not to influence too much.... (edited) 13mo
TrishB @Kalalalatja I did a little comparison with previous months (nerd that I am!) and it‘s about the same. The funny thing was they picked a couple that I went ohhh as I just kept putting them to the bottom of the pile - but then I really enjoyed them!! 13mo
TrishB @Bookwomble I do read quite fast! And I don‘t fo a lot else....well apart from work obviously!! 13mo
Kalalalatja That‘s great! It would be bad, if most of their picks had turned out not to be very good. And good to know those books at the bottom of the tbr can surprise you 😄😄 13mo

I started in April, and tried to remember what I read prior to then, so who knows how accurate this is? I am still shocked at this outcome, and am looking forward to 2018!

Thank you, Litsy and Littens! Without y'all, this would not have happened. Of that, I am certain.

My 2017 Stats:

82 total books
I'd give you the detailed breakdown but the numbers aren't adding up and it's after midnight so I'm tired. But I do know that 63% of these books were authored by women and 29% by POC. Sadly 30% were written by white men--far too high a number when I set out last January to make that number 0%. I think I'll set a more doable but low number for 2018.
Thank god for the #yearofthechunkster in 2018 bc my average is puny!

Ashley_Nicoletto So is mine girl. I've been sneaking in those tiny books to meet my goals. Not this year! 🙌🏼 2y
Natasha.C.Barnes @Ashley_Nicoletto NOT. THIS. YEAR. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 2y
Natasha.C.Barnes @Ashley_Nicoletto I expect my average to be pretty low again anyway due to comic readathons but at least I won't be steering away from the chunksters. 2y
Ashley_Nicoletto The comics are what get me as well. But there's no way I'm giving up my love of them. 2y
Natasha.C.Barnes @Ashley_Nicoletto Absolutely! I think I'll come up with a different kind of measurement than a straight average. Maybe different length categories for books and showing how many I read in each category! 2y

Also finally wrote down my reading stats for the year.

Books read: 88
The Cat Who books: 22
Agatha Christie: 24
Non-fiction: 4
Literary fiction/popular fiction/crime etc: 38

Eeek, I got a fright when I saw how much comfort reading I had done this year! Hopefully 2018 will see more substantial titles - not that I of course regret the reading pleasure from all that light reading!

WarpedSweetness I've done so much "light" reading this. Most of my reads were romance novels, and a lot of them not very good. Lol 2y
BarbaraJean That‘s quite a nice total, even with lots of comfort reads! And there‘s nothing wrong with comfort reads! 2y

My August #readingstats. I'm pretty happy about how many books I have read in August, especially since I have started uni again.

I'm not so happy about how many books I have bought in August though. I need to learn to control myself a bit! 📚📚

Cinfhen 16 read 19 bought seems like a reasonable balance 🤔 2y
Kalalalatja @Cinfhen this is embarrasing, but I hadn't even made that comparison myself 😂 I were just thinking about my bank account 💸💸 2y

tricours I've been thinking about having a book buying log. Would be interesting. Possibly horrifying. On the positive side I'm not a student 😁 What are you studying btw? 2y
tricours (I did a quick count for August, I'm at 19 and I've probably forgotten some that I can't receipts for in my email inbox) (and I also read 16 this month!!) 2y
Kalalalatja @tricours I'm studying psychology 👍 that could be really interesting! I only did it this time, because I felt like I have gotten so many new books in August, many more than usually. But it could be fun to count how many books one buys in a year 😄 2y

End of month summary. I actually thought I had read more than this, what with readathons and all. But July has passed so quickly! I've read some really good books though, and my "Best of" list contains an old favourite, two surprises, and one I expected to be great. (Can you guess which is which?)

I finally had some time to sit down and calculate my 2016 reading statistics. I'm happy to say that I was happy that I managed to hit my two goals - 33% by writers of color and 50% by women! I had a bunch of favorites, but these three were at the top of my lists. I was surprised looking back that 2016 was also the year that I read all of Saga, so I had to mention that, too!

EvieBee Great stats! What is the backlist category? 3y
JessReads @EvieBee84 Anything that wasn't published in 2016 (but that I read in 2016). Since I read so much frontlist now (because of my job as a bookseller and my access to great NYC libraries), I thought it was worth breaking out the two categories. 3y
EvieBee Oh! That is a great idea! Most of my reading is backlist but 2016 was the first year I read so many books published that year thanks to my library and finally getting a card after my move. 3y
See All 6 Comments
Megabooks Great job!! 👍🏻👍🏻 3y
JessReads @EvieBee84 Yeah, getting a library card was game changing for me! I used to read almost all backlist until I didn't have to shell out the money for hardcovers 😂 The past few years, I've really enjoyed reading books as they've been published though! 3y
