It took me awhile to get into this sequel, just because it was very heavy on navy and ship settings (this is why it took me so long to get this series in the first place). But they're back on land and discussing aviation again.

Mulan, featuring actual dragons.

Not quite as good as the first but I still really enjoyed this follow up to His Majesty‘s Dragon, in which our heroes travel to China, where Temeraire‘s egg originated. The mashup of Pern and Aubrey/Maturin I didn‘t even know I needed. Novik is A+ at developing character relationships. I wish everyone did this so well.

Finished a nonfiction and now I'm in the mood for dragons. My dad is going to be so annoyed that I'm not reading Shantaram, but I need something easy right now and I'm just not up to reading and dragging around a 10 lbs. tome. Reader guilt is real. What books and for what reasons do you feel guilty?

I didn‘t like this one as much as the first. I really like the relationship between Temeraire and Laurence, but this book didn‘t have as much witty Temeraire dialogue. Slow pace. But the audio reader is fantastic!

Visited my family in Switzerland and found time to read during a two day stay in a cabin in the mountains. Tomorrow I go back to work, for the first time since my husband passed away in May. I‘m glad I took some time off to process, be with friends and family, attend Buddhist teachings in NYC and Toronto, putter, and read. I am determined to grieve with an open heart and mind and am grateful to have the supports I need. ❤️

CuriousG Grieve with an open heart - a tragically beautiful concept. So many people underestimate how essential the grieving process is to our well-being. I love that you have been able to focus your time/energy into this in a way that is meaningful to you. Take care as you continue the journey 💙 2y

coffeenebula @CuriousG Thank you for your thoughtful response. Makes it a bit less lonely ❤️ 2y
CuriousG @coffeenebula I can't pretend to understand your exact situation, but over the past several years first my brother passed, then my nephew (and an acquired brain injury for my husband) - what I do understand is how incredibly lonely the grieving process is. No matter how many people are around, you still have to take those steps alone. My heart goes out to you. Take care ❤ 2y
coffeenebula @CuriousG Thank you. Sounds like you‘ve experienced a lot of heartbreak. My husband‘s brain was injured through multiple strokes and a massive seizure. It was very hard on us, it changed his abilities and it was just starting to change his personality, too. Being a caregiver is lonely, rewarding, frustrating, life affirming - it deepened and changed our relationship. Take gentle care ❤️ 1y

I agree with others that this seems to be a bit of a soggy middle of a 3-part series.

However, I'm guessing this was all necessary setup to change the world (...they're going to change the world, right?) as Laurence really needed to be shown there's another way of doing things; until he saw it for himself, Tem's thoughts could seem naive.

Thing that confused me: given the fuss that was made about L's lineage, why wasn't that the out used?

A good sequel, though on a star rating it'd be a 4 out of 5. The voyage to China dragged on a bit long in places for me. Once they got to China it picked up nicely.

I particularly liked the description of Chinese society with dragons. The bit with the sad, poor working class dragon in Peking made me unhappy. I halfway expected Lawrence to buy him a pig or something, as he's shown kindnesses like that to other dragons before when possible.

TindraTieren I was thinking the same thing about the hungry dragon, especially as Lawrence saw just how far his money went. 3y

I do believe I will do this whole series on audio... Simon Vance is so good!

Naomi Novik writes beautifully, and there is a lot of detail in this book. Lots of action and adventure, and I'm totally invested in Laurence and Temeraire's story.

Grimlock I actually am getting all the series signed in July and had the first one as a Kindle freebie. (I bought it later on.). So I started reading, heard good things about Vance and took the audiobook out of the library. 100% impressed with Vance. And I imagine it wouldn't be. He's a fantastic narrator so I'm glad I tried based on that recommendation. 3y

This book would've been more interesting from the dragon's POV but overall a good book. Felt like a transition or bridge novel in the series and I'm interested enough to read the next novel. #dragons #fantasy

We follow Laurence and Temeraire on their way to China. This is more a coming of age story then a naval action historical story. Here, Temeraire is going home to discover his roots and Laurence goes with him in the hopes of being allowed to keep Temeraire with him in England. Both Temeraire and Laurence do a lot of growing up in this. It's as interesting and fun to read as the first one but with less action and more of a inner journey feeling.

I did enjoy this - pure escapism, Sharpe with dragons. If I'm honest, stuffy uptight Laurence is starting to irritate just a little, but Temeraire is so splendid that it doesn't matter. Looking forward to the next instalment.

The journey through ToJ is a long, eventful, and challenging one but I closed the book with a smile. Wonderful Temeraire is still gradually maturing and I loved following along. Even with 7 books left, I was worried at times about the Temeraire and Laurence dynamic duo and what might become of them.

Well I give up. I love Temeraire and Laurence seems like a good guy, but I'm just bored reading these books. Nothing really happens but gosh there it goes on and on and on. I just can't do 7 more like this.

CaitlinSiem We all have our cups of tea, as the saying goes. Sorry it didn't pan out for you :( 4y
[DELETED] 3517561138 @CaitlinSiem I don't know, it's been a few hours and I am already missing Temeraire. I just wish that the series was less drawn out and well, slow. 4y
CaitlinSiem I understand. It's hard to say if the others will be more fast paced or not. 4y

CaitlinSiem Okay. I just got through the chapter where Laurence was attacked by Feng Li during the storm. I'm ready for your question! 4y
[DELETED] 3517561138 @CaitlinSiem so I actually answered my question as I continued reading. I was wondering if it wasn't a second attempt by Feng Li, and that was what the ghost after the New Years celebration was all about- trying to off Laurence. 4y
CaitlinSiem It was. Which I was like, oh crap, once I found that out. Poor guy. 4y

[DELETED] 3517561138 Lovely. Not much better in life than that. I am struggling with the book though. I really don't like the direction it is going. Even though due to the fact there are 9 books I know I can rest assured Temeraire is not separated from Laurence. I just sort of wish it would pick up already. So much sea! 4y
LauraBrook Yay Lake Michigan! 4y
Karen3 So pretty! Looks like an amazing day. 4y
CaitlinSiem @Bookgirl Nice! I'm over on the Huron side on occasion, my family has a camp over there. It's so much different than Lake Michigan, which I love. 4y
CaitlinSiem @TirzahPrice @LauraBrook Yes! I love Lake Michigan. I'm such a water girl. 4y
CaitlinSiem @AlisonCanRead That's why I picked up book one, too! I loved Uprooted and instantly needed to read everything by her. Though I waited quite some time before actually reading it 😂 4y
CaitlinSiem @Karen3 it was a wonderful day, thank you. 😊 4y
CaitlinSiem @CDT Yes, that suspense was taken out of it a bit. I went in knowing it was going to be a little more subdued from a few reviews I saw. I'm like 150 pages in. Mostly my heart just hurts for these two and the trials they have to go through. 4y
[DELETED] 3517561138 I agree! I just want them to be together and be safe and happy! 150 pages, I'm reading it on kindle and am 55% thru and I am dying to ask you about something but I don't know if you've got there yet. Laurence was just attacked during a storm? Sound familiar? 4y
CaitlinSiem @CDT Hmmm, no. I just started Part 2 if that helps. Chapter 6. But I can let you know when I get there. I'm curious now! (And yes, I just want this precious duo to be happy together) The prince is currently spending a ton of time with Temeraire teaching him Chinese and it's pissing me off. 😡 4y
[DELETED] 3517561138 Yes!! I really dislike that guy!!! Okay when you get there you'll know and we can discuss. 4y
Ellsbeth I grew up a short walk from Lake Michigan. I try to explain to people where I live out west now how great some of the beaches are on the Great Lakes. This is a good example! 4y
Bookgirl @CaitlinSiem @Ellsbeth The beaches on Lake MI are amazing!! Huron has some nice ones too, just a different atmosphere on that side. Both lakes are so beautiful and relaxing ❤️ 4y

Much less interesting than the first novel in this series, though I'm too entranced with Temeraire's story to quit. I'm excited that this book ended in such a way to promote hope for more thrilling adventures in the 3rd novel.
