Not sure I've tagged everyone! 😂
I had higher hopes for this book, as I was very interested in the interracial adoption storyline, but I felt the story really dragged. It took me ages to read. At least it fulfilled some prompts! The parts I did love was the exploration of adoption trauma, and an example of how inhumane our immigration system is (saying more would border in spoiler territory).

This epic fantasy is solidly based in real China / Japan relations during the 20th century. At the same time, the main character has meaningful development as she transforms from a rural orphan to a military neophyte. She‘s charming and smart, if also completely beyond her depth. The fantasy aspects are rooted in Chinese culture and myth. Overall a win!

I really enjoyed this historical novel, from China in the 1930s to present day US. Learned a lot about that period too. A really good read.

This was my first book by Lisa See (apparently I live under a rock), and I‘m gutted. Beautifully written but positively heartbreaking all the way through… the story of women in 19th century China and the story of a beautiful relationship between two girls throughout their lives. The hardships that women suffered in that time and place their whole lives are horrifying and foreign, but See‘s characters are so painfully relatable as humans.

I'm really enjoying this series. In the 2nd one, China wants Temeraire to return; so him, Laurence and their crew set off to Temeraire's place of birth 🐉

I love Lisa See! As usual for one of her books, I learned new things about a corner of women‘s history I was previously unaware of, and I cried. #AuthorAMonth #Booked2022 #SetInChina @Soubhiville @BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft
This book was beyond fascinating!! It‘s what @rockpools calls a #GoogleyBook 🤓SO MANY rabbit holes 🐰In the Yunnan Province of China lives the Akha People, where tradition & tribal customs rule; it‘s also a region where valuable pu‘er tea is harvested & cultivated. This story follows Li-Yan as she grows from a poor child to a successful business woman spanning many decades. At times overwrought & overwritten, I still enjoyed #AAM #SetInChina
