Purchased a #BlindDateWithABook today!
What nautical book will it be?!

Ruthiella My guess is it will be an Aubrey Maturin book by Patrick O‘Brian. 8mo
CrowCAH @Ruthiella hmm 🤔 wait and see; I‘ll be posting the book tomorrow! 8mo

The Cruel Sea | Nicholas Monsarrat
Pickpick

This is a detailed story, taking you through every year of the war with a varied cast of characters. Some of the cast changes up throughout the book, and some are more well-rounded than others. Given the theatre of operations, there weren‘t many female characters. This would be a good pairing with HMS Ulysses, by Alistair MacLean.

Itchyfeetreader I read another of his books and loved 8mo
rabbitprincess @Itchyfeetreader Ah I didn't know he'd written others! Good to know there is more. 8mo

There are many good series set on a boat in the historical fiction genre. One of my favourites is the Thomas Kydd series by Julian Goodwin, but it seems the least well know. Now there are 24 books in that series.

Andrew65 @PageShifter @Monica5 They are very good reads, and have a couple of great lead characters. It starts off with the pressganging. 2y

At the height of Britain‘s maritime power, the French managed to commit an unbelievable amount of damage to the Brits traveling the Indian Ocean to reach British Indian colonies from the French base of #Mauritius. Unfortunately the “clash” didn‘t occur until well into the second half. There wasn‘t enough material it seems so the author gave an inordinate amount of background about Brits in India—in a very gossipy way. The French were almost ⬇️

Texreader completely missing from the first half making me wonder if I were only reading about storms (hurricanes did in many ships) and not clashes. The gossipy nature of the book tracked so many people it was a very difficult audiobook to follow. Once I accepted I couldn‘t follow on every person‘s story, I focused on the highlights. Now that it‘s called Mauritius instead of Isle de France, I‘ll bet you can guess who won! #readingafrica2022 #foodandlit (edited) 2y
Librarybelle I wound imagine it would be hard to follow on audiobook! I‘ve tried listening to a few history nonfiction books on audio and find I just cannot concentrate well enough on them…I guess I need to read the facts in print! 2y

My son is in Paris today and tomorrow for a school trip (photos he sent me today) so it seemed appropriate to post these for #foodandlit #France. Also, the Arc de Triomphe was mentioned in the tagged book while I was finishing it today when France‘s single maritime defeat of the British in the Indian Ocean was carved on the Arc de Triomphe. #Mauritius #readingafrica2022

Kammbia1 I will be in Paris in early September for vacation. I‘m visiting Strasbourg on the same trip. It will be my 2nd time to Paris. Even though, I‘m really looking forward to visiting Strasbourg but I want to see the Eiffel Tower again. 2y

Singout
The Mauritius Command | Patrick O'Brian
Mehso-so

A re-read: I‘ve gone through most of the Patrick O‘Brian books already, but this fits both #ReadingAfrica2022 for #Mauritius #Réunion, and #Booked2022 #Nautical, so I went back to it. A bit of a cheat because it doesn‘t really get into Mauritian culture at all, just conflict between France and England with these African islands as some of the many pawns. Not my favourite in the series, as others do get a bit more into culture and science.

Cinfhen Nice way to incorporate both challenges 🙌🏻 2y
Singout I thought so!

It‘s time for some challenge updates! I‘m reading (listening to) the tagged book for #readingafrica2022 #Mauritius but also for #foodandlit #France. I‘m almost finished so then I‘ll have to pick from a lot of good books for France. I just shipped my son off to Europe for a school trip that will include a couple of days in Paris. So….hopefully I can post some photos when he gets back for #foodandlit

Librarybelle Woohoo! 2y
JamieArc Oooh. Carcassonne is one of my favorite places. I‘m curious about The Friar of Carcassonne. 2y
Texreader @JamieArc There‘s a story behind that book. I read another book by the same author and went and bought everything he‘d ever written including The Friar. I haven‘t read any of the others I bought yet but I‘m hoping I can get this one in this month. 2y

Audiocrafting. Four cards finished!! 12 more to go. This is a bit hard on my elbow recovering from surgery so I‘m taking many breaks.

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick How cute?! 💛 And please take it easy on that elbow. 2y
aperfectmjk Okay, so audiocrafting is a thing, good to know I'm not the only one calling it that. These are awesome! I know what you mean with the breaks. I have to force myself to take breaks when I paint because it puts a lot of tension in my neck and shoulders. It's hard to walk away when you're in the creative zone though. 2y

I‘m audiocrafting making summery cards while listening to the tagged book. I will start to color next. Fun!! The van reminds me of Stranger Things. 😁

Karisa Watching Stranger Things right now. This new season is so intense! 2y
