I love this edition - the letters are reproduced on loose pages and you take them out of the envelopes (glued to the pages) to read them.

Lcsmcat I have that same edition! They‘re fun, aren‘t they? 2d
LeahBergen Oooo! I need this. I‘ve never read it and I‘ve been looking for a pretty edition. 2d

I didn‘t get much reading done last night after working on Christmas decorations, so I‘m catching up on “Riddles in the Dark” with coffee this morning.

In Chapter 4, I find the giants up on the mountains intriguing and wish there was a bit more about them. Instead we get plenty of goblins. This chapter in the annotated edition includes many different illustrations of goblins, and I think this is my favorite.

JazzFeathers I suspect Tolkien's kids were fond of goblins 😂 l too am fascinated with giants. I love that the Mountain becomes alive like that. I also quite like the way they depicted them in the film. 4d
wordslinger42 I've never seen that illustration before! 4d
Daisey @wordslinger42 I didn‘t realize the annotated edition included so many different illustrations by different artists from around the world. I‘ll loving that aspect! 4d
Daisey @JazzFeathers That's a good point; I bet his kids did enjoy them! 4d
JulAnna 💛 this illustration! 3d

I used money from an early Christmas gift this year to purchase The Annotated Hobbit to go along with our current readalong. It arrived today so I‘m playing a bit of catch up on chapters 2 & 3. I‘m excited to see illustrations from other editions (above center is from the 1973 Slovak edition) and to read the annotations, although I doubt I‘ll get to all of them with this reading.

JazzFeathers The Italian translation of this edition is the very first Tolkien book l ever bought. Nostalgia... 5d

This is a fantastic book filled with letters and drawings that Tolkien wrote to his children while pretending to be Santa.

Every December, posing as Father Christmas, Tolkien wrote a letter to his children. It may not be a novel exactly, but it‘s one of the books I‘m looking forward to reading this month, so I couldn‘t resist. #deardecember #epistolarynovel #wintergames #merryreaders

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I read that last December, so much fun. 1w
Godmotherx5 I found it on Audible. Thanks for posting. #feelingfestive 1w

Bookworm54 Is this a film too? If it‘s just the book, it‘s 21 points, but 26 if it has been made into a film :) 1w
mdm139 Oh geez. It is 21. Unless I get extra pts for it being a tbr as well. 1w
Bookworm54 Unfortunately we aren‘t stacking them like that. I checked! Highest value points for the reads, so holiday in this case ☺️ 1w
