Themes: Quirky & Humorous, Nursery Rhymes in the Real World, Discworld-esque

This is a silly, quirky, amazing story and I cannot wait to read the next book in the series (c‘mon USPS, hurry up!!). I loved the humor and I got very strong Sir Terry Pratchett vibes - which I do not throw around loosely because very little compares to his books. If you need a palate cleanser that isn‘t just fluff, this is it. I want to recommend it to everyone!!

lynneamch Thanks for the reminder. Loved all his Thursday stories. Have 4 of his others on my shelf that I keep forgetting to get around to. 2mo

RaeLovesToRead

Started a new "feel good fiction" shelf on my Goodreads, because I expect The House in the Cerulean Sea is gonna be cheerful and heart warming. The only other books I could think of to add to it were the Thursday Murder Club books and the tagged... maybe the Hamish Macbeth mysteries too if I remembered them better...

DO I SERIOUSLY JUST READ MISERABLE FICTION?!?!?!!

BeeMagical LOL I feel this! I swear I only read thrillers and murder mysteries 😂 I force myself to throw in a different genre every now and again so I dont fall too far down the rabbit hole 😂 🐰 2y
RaeLovesToRead @BeeMagical It seems I read almost anything EXCEPT for happy stuff! 😵 And biography, I don't read much biography generally speaking. 2y
DaveGreen7777 HA HA! Do you enjoy “feel bad” movies, too?! 😂 2y
See All 28 Comments
RaeLovesToRead @DaveGreen7777 My favourite films are Lost in Translation, Hot Fuzz & Muppet Xmas Carol, so go figure! 😅 I also like films where people travel somewhere sunny, have sex and drink wine - Vicky Christina Barcelona / Sideways / Y tú mama Tambien / Call me by your name - its a genre of its own 😆😆😆 2y
RaeLovesToRead @DaveGreen7777 My sister watches a lot of seriously miserable films though! (Do you have any favourites????) 2y
DaveGreen7777 @RaeLovesToRead I tend to avoid movies that are too depressing for me! 🙈 However, I absolutely loved “Pan‘s Labyrinth”, even though it broke my heart at several places! 🥺 2y
RaeLovesToRead @DaveGreen7777 Me too. I cry at adverts. I made myself watch The Green Mile a few years ago... oh my days 😭😭😭 (Think I'll stick with my sunny holiday road trip romance genre that I invented.) Do you have any favourite NON-DEPRESSING films? 2y
RaeLovesToRead (I haven't actually seen Pan's Labyrinth, but I don't want to have my heart broken, so maybe I should avoid!) 2y
DaveGreen7777 @RaeLovesToRead Hee Hee, I love a good action movie, so my favorites include Die Hard, the first two Terminator movies, and the Indiana Jones trilogy (the 4th movie doesn‘t count). I also like some modern action movies, like Atomic Blonde and the John Wick trilogy. (edited) 2y
DaveGreen7777 @RaeLovesToRead A couple of quirky favorites also include Jackie Chan‘s Shanghai Noon/Knights movies (great blend of action and comedy), The Naked Gun (possibly the hardest I‘ve ever laughed at a movie), and a rare case of a movie being better than the book it was based on… Stardust! 😱 2y
RaeLovesToRead @DaveGreen7777 You have really good taste! 😁 I've actually watched several of those films in the last year (my parents were trying to cheer me up!) Anything with Lesley Nielson in is hilarious, but my favourite of the films you've mentioned is Stardust ❤💫💕 I'm in love with that film (and I only saw it for the first time this year - long story). So so beautiful 🥰🥰 2y
RaeLovesToRead @DaveGreen7777 A couple more faves are The Wicker Man and The Warriors (come out to play-ayyyy) 2y
DaveGreen7777 @RaeLovesToRead Oooh, The Warriors is a good one! 😀 A couple more I like, although I wouldn‘t say they‘re favorites, are Guy Ritchie‘s “Snatch” (Brad Pitt‘s finest performance in my humble opinion) and Scream (always watch it around Halloween). And speaking of horror movies, my favorite is Slience of the Lambs! 2y
RaeLovesToRead @DaveGreen7777 Snatch is awesome! I've not seen Scream, I don't think (I think someone once took me on a date to see Scream... 4??! but I'd have been a teenager, haha)... I haven't seen (or read) Silence of the Lambs because I'm a collosal wimp. I watched The Woman in Black in a dark flat by myself. It was... an error 😅😅 What did you think of The Shining (film)? 👀 *watches intently for reaction* 2y
DaveGreen7777 @RaeLovesToRead Well, I used to really like the Shining movie, but after reading the book, I did find the movie paled in comparison. However, I won‘t ever watch the movie again after all the stuff that has come out about how cruel Stanley Kubrick was to Shelly Duvall while filming the movie. Nothing excuses outright abusing the actors! 2y
DaveGreen7777 @RaeLovesToRead However, as an aside, I wound up loving the “Doctor Sleep” sequel far more than I thought I would… and Rebecca Ferguson was especially glorious as Rose the Hat! 🎩 2y
RaeLovesToRead @DaveGreen7777 Ah have you finished The Shining, then? It's still down on your Litsy (and GR) as in progress! I loved the book, hated the film... hadn't heard anything about the Kubrick thing, that's really sad ☹ I have no idea what Dr Sleep or Rose the Hat are 😄 will Google... 2y
RaeLovesToRead Ah... sequel! 2y
DaveGreen7777 @RaeLovesToRead I actually had about 50 pages to go in The Shining when I wound up starting a Buddy read, so I put finishing the book on hold. 🙈 Still, what I read was so good I have no doubt it will be a 5-star read when I finish it, unless Stephen King really messes up the ending…. which, knowing him, is actually quite possible! 😳 2y
DaveGreen7777 Also, another fun quirky movie you may try if you haven‘t seen it yet is “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”, where Robert Downey Jr. plays an aspiring actor who accidentally gets involved in a murder case. It‘s actually my favorite movie with him! 😀 2y
RaeLovesToRead @DaveGreen7777 That just made me laugh out loud 😂🤣 Haha. I gave it 4 stars, but I'm a meanie when it comes to stars (as I'm sure you've noticed) 2y
RaeLovesToRead @DaveGreen7777 Next time I'm in an Add-to-Basket kinda mood, I'll get Kiss Kiss Bang Bang then! 2y
DaveGreen7777 @RaeLovesToRead YAS!!! Hope you enjoy the movie! 😀 (edited) 2y
Larkken This made me giggle! The first author that came to mind is Becky Chambers for feel-good spec fic… but it‘s taken me most of a year to read her first series bc I needed a break from the sweetness! Lol 2y
RaeLovesToRead @Larkken Actually, you have a point there! I remember the long way to a small angry planet being cheerful and wholesome... maybe that was why I was in a bad mood with it at the time and (probably) underrated it 😅😅 I'm planning a re-read and I'll try not to be such a humbug this time, haha. 2y
Larkken @RaeLovesToRead I find breaks while reading this sort of thing to def be beneficial 😆 an overload of wholesome is objectionable but small doses can be nice! Maybe some angsty serial killers in between book sections to spice things up? Lol 2y
RaeLovesToRead @Larkken Hahaha.. I don't know why I don't radiate toward cheerful books. My Dad keeps trying to get me to read "Space Team". I am... resistant ? As I was saying to Dave yesterday, I don't watch serious stuff on TV. (The most tension I can take is Bake Off, hehe) 2y
RaeLovesToRead @DaveGreen7777 Speaking of which... I bought that DVD 🙈... along with, like, £40 worth of other books and films too... 🙈🙈🙈🙈 2y

katy4peas Haha, we completed it shelf by shelf with the books first and then added in the shelves. Because you know.... the books are most important!! 😁 @ErinSBecker @SW-T @Come-read-with-me @Branwen @ozma.of.oz 4y
katy4peas And each shelf is a different language of titles... there were two English, one French, and one Russian. Made it a little harder! 4y
ErinSBecker Amazing! Where did you get this beautiful puzzle? That makes me wonder too - does anyone know of coloring books where the pictures are books/libraries? 4y
katy4peas @ErinSBecker my dad‘s coworker sent a puzzle to everyone on his team and each puzzle matches each person‘s interests. The company that made it is Galison and it is really nice quality. We were surprised! The title is I‘d rather be reading 1000 piece puzzle. 4y
SW-T Three languages? That certainly made things harder! Great job! 😊 4y
ErinSBecker @katy4peas thanks! I'll look for it. My kiddo is up to 60 piece puzzles now so, eventually.... 😂 4y
katy4peas @ErinSBecker it was slightly challenging, but quite fun and the textures and colors were different enough that it wasn‘t “get stuck and quit” challenging but a “fun, one more piece” kind of challenging. 😁👍🏼 4y

#MayMovieMagic Day 28: Iphigene‘s review: “The Big Over #Easy is a classic whodunit detective story set in an unusual place where nursery rhyme characters come to life & some of them are quite shady characters. I‘ve never read any of Jasper Fforde‘s novels, but this novel has made me a fan. He makes the uncommon seem usual & makes the whole case of the dead egg a believable crime story worth your investigation.” https://wp.me/pDlzr-8R

Jack Spratt from the Nursery Crime Division has to solve the murder of Humpty Dumpty, who fell from a wall...
That tells you everything you need to know! 😂 The book is not quite as bonkers as the Thursday Next novels (they're kind of related, though), but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I had a lot of fun, even if I had to look up some characters from English nursery rhymes.
It's my pick for 'murder investigation' for the #SFFTBRChallenge.

Duologies, trilogies and more for #RiotGrams was hard, I stared at my shelves for ages.

I‘d quite like to read the conclusion (The Last Great Tortoise Race) of the Nursery Crime Division someday... it‘s not mentioned on Jasper Fforde‘s website though and I went pretty far down an internet rabbit hole before I found him promising that it would happen in a guardian article from 2016.

from eggs to animals to homicidal gingerbread-men, there are a whole bunch of #anthropomorphiccharacters in Jasper Fforde's hardboiled Nursery Crime series.

slightly different style than Fforde's Thursday Next series, though his signature humor and wit is abundant throughout. I read this book in 8th grade and was immediately hooked on all Fforde's books forevermore.

Jack Spratt and the Nursery Crime Division first appear in Fforde's other series Thursday Next (one of my all-time faves) as a book in the book world. We see the book from the inside as Thursday helps revive the stale detective story.

The (real world) series centers around nursery rhymes told as hard-boiled detective stories (e.g. the murder of Humpty Dumpty).

All sorts of #bookwithinabook layers here!
