The Eyre Affair
The Eyre Affair: A Novel | Jasper Fforde
The first installment in Jasper Fforde's New York Times bestselling series of Thursday Next novels introduces literary detective Thursday Next and her alternate reality of literature-obsessed England Fans of Douglas Adams and P. G. Wodehouse will love visiting Jasper Fforde's Great Britain, circa 1985, when time travel is routine, cloning is a reality (dodos are the resurrected pet of choice), and literature is taken very, very seriously: it's a bibliophile's dream. England is a virtual police state where an aunt can get lost (literally) in a Wordsworth poem and forging Byronic verse is a punishable offense. All this is business as usual for Thursday Next, renowned Special Operative in literary detection. But when someone begins kidnapping characters from works of literature and plucks Jane Eyre from the pages of Brontë's novel, Thursday is faced with the challenge of her career. Fforde's ingenious fantasy--enhanced by a Web site that re-creates the world of the novel--unites intrigue with English literature in a delightfully witty mix. Thursday's zany investigations continue with six more bestselling Thursday Next novels, including One of Our Thursdays is Missing and the upcoming The Woman Who Died A Lot. Visit jasperfforde.com.

Great book. I am handing it off to my 15 year old who has run out of books. We did not pay for internet at hotel, so he is reading like crazy. I think he will like it.
I loved all the literary references, and the vampires, time travel and evil genius. Seriously, this book is a wild literary ride! I will read more from this series.

This took me a long time to read - I had to renew my library rental 3x. I‘m not entirely sure why, but perhaps because I didn‘t find Hades to be an intriguing villain. After the first encounter, he pretty much fell flat to me. Thursday, however, I like. So I‘ll read the next one. #ebook #kindle #libraries #bookrecs

I really wanted to like this more than I did. A comic/fantasy novel riffing on classic literature? Sign me up. And it wasn't bad, fairly amusing in places and certainly inventive but it almost suffered from a surfeit of ideas and a lack of clarity about the rules of the fantasy world he has created. Slightly underwhelmed.

Daisey I completely understand. I enjoyed this one, but I reached a point where I just decided to give up all reasoning to make it work and go with whatever craziness it threw at me. 2mo
Minervasbutler @Daisey yes I did the same. Maybe I was a bit harsh. Liked it but didn't love it. 3 stars on Goodreads. 2mo
emz711 Whattt! Loved it. When you read the sequels, it explains the world mechanics a lot more. Keep going! 2mo

I‘m finally getting to this one, and it is just delightful. The character names! The protagonist is Thursday Next, and her associates include Paige Turner, Victor Analogy, and Jack Schitt. I love the sense of humor in this novel, which is an alternate history set in the 1980s, with time travel and other anomalies.

Love Jasper Fjorde's #UniqueCharacterNames in this #series. MC Thursday Next is a SpecOps agent for LiteraTec. Her boss is Victor Analogy, her partner is Bowden Cable. Her Uncle Mycroft, invented the Prose Portal, which allows real-world individuals to enter books. There's her pet dodo, Pickwick, and my favorite, head of the Goliath Corporation's internal security service, Jack Schitt. 🤪

I wanted so badly to like this book. If it wasn‘t for a litsy read, I would have bailed. It was so hard to get through. It was easier after they got to the book traveling bits- but before that I had to force my way though. I didn‘t like the writing style, the dialogues felt rushed through, and overly dramatic, but then other parts felt like the characters weren‘t feeling enough. It felt rushed, it felt like the reactions were wrong (continued👇🏻)

Amabear And used at the wrong times, and it was really confusing how much was pulled from other books and eras. I feel like she tried to make a Harry Potter bad guy happen, and it didn‘t really work. It just wasn‘t believable. I really loved all the ideas, (edited) 5mo
Amabear Some very very cool inventions and police aspects, but felt like they were too forced, jumbled, and didn‘t flow well together. I feel like she tried to do too much in one book. I hate giving bad reviews but I really can‘t help it here. 5mo
wanderinglynn I felt similarly except I didn‘t finish the book. I bailed. 5mo

KathyWheeler @BarbaraTheBibliophage and @Jennifer3 The early Scarpetta books were so much better! At some point they started getting ridiculous, and I quit reading them. 8mo
Jennifer3 @KathyWheeler @BarbaraTheBibliophage I hate when that happens to authors but since I can‘t see myself being a writer, I have no ability in the creative arena. I image it can get hard with the same style and character over time. Her early books were impossible to put down. 8mo
GlassAsDiamonds What about Kerry Greenwood‘s Phryne Fisher or Corina Chapman series ? @Cinfhen - Corina certainly qualifies as an amateur detective! 😊 They‘re easy, fast & fun reads but always very well written, immaculately edited and very well researched. 8mo
Cinfhen Thanks for the recommendation @GlassAsDiamonds will see if I can find the tagged book xx 8mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Jennifer3 @KathyWheeler I‘m always sad when authors fall into the doldrums. It must be hard to know when to stop a series. I‘m sure they‘re damned if they do, and damned if they don‘t. 8mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage @GlassAsDiamonds More good ideas!! Thanks! 8mo
KathyWheeler @BarbaraTheBibliophage I agree on this. I don‘t have a creative bone in my body, so I don‘t judge authors too harshly for this as I know I couldn‘t even write their “bad” books! It does make me sad though. 8mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage @KathyWheeler Oh, for sure. I can‘t imagine writing one fiction book, let alone a series! 8mo
Jennifer3 @BarbaraTheBibliophage KathyWheeler It is definitely sad! 8mo
