Emily Dickinson: Poems | Emily Dickinson
58 posts | 8 read | 3 to read
Emily Elizabeth Dickinson was born in Amherst, Massachusetts on December 10,1830, to a prominent family of academics, lawyers, and statesmen. Following her education at Amherst Academy and Mt. Holyoke Female Seminary, Dickinson embarked on her impassioned journey as apoet. Composing first in a fairly conventional style, the poetess soon began to experiment with her writing; her frequent use of dashes, sporadic capitalization of nouns, broken meter, and idiosyncratic metaphors made her work unparalleled for its time. Dickinson's poetry dealt not only with issues of death, faith, and immortality, but with nature, domesticity, and the power of language to transfer emotions into written text. An obsessively private writer??only ten of her some 1,700 poems were published during her lifetime??Dickinson withdrew from social contact at the ageof 23 and devoted herself to writingin secret. It wasn't until her death in 1866 that the scope of Dickinson's work was realized, when her sister Lavinia found her prolific collection in a dresser drawer. Since this time, Emily Dickinson's writing has had significant influences on modern American poetry; her complex use of language and form has contributed to her reputation as one of the most innovative poets of the 19thcentury. This collection of some of her finest works illustrates not only Dickinson's talent as a writer but her profound love of language, nature, and life.

Dickinson (Apple TV)

Sharpeipup How is it? The previews intrigued me. 1mo
Laughterhp I watched the first episode and the thought the premise was pretty interesting. I don‘t know anything about Emily Dickinson or her work. I felt like I needed to read some of her poems to enjoy the show more. 1mo
jewright She is my favorite American poet! 1mo
Letora I want to see this! She's my favorite poet! 1mo
WanderingBookaneer @Sharpeipup : It is bizarre. Emily Dickinson is very much Emily Dickinson at times, but at other times diametrically opposite from what we know of her. It definitely appeals to a younger demographic. My students seem to know all the guest stars. 1mo

Catching up part 6!
Anyone who has ever met me knows I hate poetry, and I make exceptions for very few. Emily Dickinson is one of those exceptions because I may not understand what exactly she means, but that doesn‘t mean I don‘t enjoy her work.

I grew up reading emily Dickinsons poetry. She has a range of poems from light and airy to heavy and deep. Her poetry is very interesting to read and opened up my love for writiny. I would reccomend her poetry as a read aloud or author study. She has an interesting life story. For ELL I would pre-teach vocabulary. https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poets/emily-dickinson teacher/student resource. ##LAe3414SPRING19

Pickpick

This was the first book of poetry that I read this year, and I just realized that it was still showing in my currently reading titles! My mind drifted away to a less frenetic time, as I embraced the beauty of the language. While I recognized a few poems, many new friends were made from reading this book.

Mine is the more convenient

“A train went through a burial gate,
A bird broke forth and sang,
And trilled,and quivered,and shook his
throat
Till all the churchyard rang;

And then adjusted his little notes,
And bowed and sang again.
Doubtless,he thought it meet of him
To say goodbye to men.”

“The mountain sat upon the plain
In his eternal chair,
His observation omnifold,
His inquest everywhere.

The seasons prayed around his knees,
Like children round a sire;
Grandfather of the days is he,
Of dawn the ancestor.”

#poemsbeforephones

monalyisha Have you, by chance, read “Educated” yet? There‘s a mountain in that, which Westover calls “the Indian Princess”: “her legs formed of huge ravines, her hair a spray of pines fanning over the northern ridge. Her stance... commanding, one leg thrust forward in a powerful movement, more stride than step”. It‘s one of the more beautiful parts of the narration. 🖤 12mo

I keep it staying at home,
With a bobolink for a chorister,
And an orchard for a dome.

And the sermon is never long;
So instead of getting to heaven at last,
I‘m going all along!

“Each life converges to some center
Expressed or still:
Exists in every human nature
A goal,

Admitted scarcely to itself, it may be,
Too fair
For credibility‘s temerity
To dare.”

Do you ever feel like you should've been born as a different animal?🐨
I know I sure do. Not necessarily because humanity let's me down, but just in because how I perceive nature seemingly so differently.🌷 every time I visit the forest, I feel magic. It does something to me, touching in my deepest core of my being. 💐Flowers are amazing remodels. They're all different yet they just bloom, not thinking about the other close to it.
