Our Revolution
Our Revolution: A Future to Believe in | Bernie Sanders
'Bernie Sanders has changed US politics forever' Owen Jones Bernie Sanders stormed to international headlines after running an extraordinary campaign for the Democratic primaries that saw over 13 million people turn out to vote for him, and changing the global discussion surrounding US politics. But how did a complete unknown and an avowed socialist make such waves? In Our Revolution, Sanders provides a unique insight into the campaign that galvanized a movement, sharing experiences from the campaign trail and the techniques that shaped it. And it wasn't just his use of new media; Sanders' message resonated with millions. His supporters are young and old, dissatisfied with expanding social inequality, struggling with economic instability and who rebelled against a political elite who has long ignored them. This is a global phenomenon, driving movements from Syriza in Greece to Podemos in Spain and Jeremy Corbyn in the UK. Drawing on decades of experience as activist and politician, Sanders outlines his ideas for continuing this political revolution. He shows how we can fight for a progressive economic, environmental, racial and social justice agenda that creates jobs, raises wages and protects the environment. Searing in its assessment of the current political and economic situation, but hopeful and inspiring in its vision of the future, this book contains an important message for anyone tired of 'same as usual' politics and looking for a way to change the game.

Honestly this felt kind of rushed. Half of it is just his policies he campaigned on. The best chapter here is the one on the media, that had a lot of personal insight to it, as well as the chapter on vulnerable people. The other half is your basic memoir, but it really doesn't provide a ton of insight into his campaign, more just a listing of events that happened, a timeline without any reflection.

I was never fervently pro-Bernie but he legitimately seems like a good dude. This book is a memoir and call to action. He is actively seeking to engage which is so nice hear and feel a part of. He's also intensely passionate (can be a pro and a con, honestly). Read if you want to be super sad about the direction we have taken but ultimately encouraged to help course correct.

I am glad I read this book. It had many things that I had not thought about before. It also made me want to research further into some issues that I was not aware of. Towards the end some of the book gets a bit repetitive.

KathyWheeler I might read it just to see if I can figure out the Bernie fever. I didn't dislike him, but I didn't understand the fierce devotion many people seemed to feel for him. (edited) 7y

This was a great read - the first part is a memoir of his life, career in public service, and presidential campaign and the second part is his detailed vision for a better future America that serves the interests of all citizens.

Honestly between reading this and rewatching Parks and Rec I'm feeling all kinds of fired up to become more politically active and get involved in my community.

My partner & I are spending the evening reading. My 18 hour migraine has abated and I'm feeling at last happily exhausted. Having cancelled all my chores for the day, I will read guiltlessly since my eyes were too brittle all afternoon. The evening is now completely soundless and I'm reading Bernie. My partner's reading Elizabeth Warren. When we're through, we'll switch.

DivineDiana So sorry about your migraine. Exhausting. Happy that you are reading once again and do love this photo. ❤️️ 7y
Suet624 I was his assistant while he was Mayor of Burlington and when he was Congressman. He has been fighting for all the right things forever. He's always had to go up against the establishment. He changed Burlington and Vermont in so many wonderful ways. Funding for health clinics, for dental clinics in schools, for music in the parks so low income residents could enjoy free music, etc. Seniors, single moms and kids were his focus. He's a good man. 7y
Hobbinol @Suet624 That is so great to hear. I've been a fan of his for quite some time now. What a wonderful opportunity you had! I'm envious. He is one of the main reasons why I thought of moving to VT in my later years--some of my ancestors were Vermonters. But lately, I've been thinking it might be too far away from Manhattan for me. When we do our New England tour in a couple years, we'll be scoping out New Haven, New London (CT) and Brattleboro (VT). 7y
Suet624 It's definitely a haul to Manhattan. I'm not familiar with Brattleboro. I spend time in Mid and Northern Vermont - Burlington and Stowe. 90 minutes to Montreal which is a fabulous place to spend time. You should come and visit Burlington. It's beautiful. And you'll run into Bernie on the street. (edited) 7y
ValerieAndBooks @Hobbinol driving from CT to NYC is often horrendous, I usually have to take Dramamine (as a passenger); so much stop-and-go traffic. But you are pretty comfortable with trains so if that's your main way to get to the city you should be ok! 7y
ValerieAndBooks I'm in the Philly area, daughter's college in CT, son's college in Boston, so am now very familiar with the commute that has NYC halfway through. Hoping younger son picks a school that's an easier drive (but he probably won't do so) 7y
Hobbinol @ValerieAndBooks Wow! You really make the rounds! We will definitely be looking strictly at towns with train stations-- I adore trains. Every time I drive to where I grew up in Raleigh, I get honked at now! I can't even imagine driving into Manhattan! I would have a nervous breakdown! I've been too southernized to ever attempt that😆 7y

After this election I was hurt. Hurt that we elected a human with so much hatred. I didn't know how this could happen, but I realized I was confused and hurt because I didn't understand. I had blinders on. I realized-to understand, I would need to explore differences. My 2017 goal is to read, experience, and learn as much as possible. The only way to create meaningful change is to celebrate and respect difference. I felt Bern was the best start.

Ericmanciniwriter Well said 7y
HotMessJess @Eamann thank you. I plan on reading all sides of the argument this year. My next will be In Trump We Trust by Ann Coulter, ....painful to admit, but I need to explore the right a bit more. No point in holing myself up for the next two years :) 7y
