Dreamland Burning
Dreamland Burning | Jennifer Latham
Some bodies won't stay buried. Some stories need to be told. When seventeen-year-old Rowan Chase finds a skeleton on her family's property, she has no idea that investigating the brutal century-old murder will lead to a summer of painful discoveries about the past... and the present. Nearly one hundred years earlier, a misguided violent encounter propels seventeen-year-old Will Tillman into a racial firestorm. In a country rife with violence against blacks and a hometown segregated by Jim Crow, Will must make hard choices on a painful journey towards self discovery and face his inner demons in order to do what's right the night Tulsa burns. Through intricately interwoven alternating perspectives, Jennifer Latham's lightning-paced page-turner brings the Tulsa race riot of 1921 to blazing life and raises important question about the complex state of US race relations - both yesterday and today.

YA historical fiction--ever hear of the Tulsa Race Riot of 1921? Me neither. When Rowan discovers a body hidden under a floor on her property she discovers who she is. As an affluent biracial teen she is aware of race issues but that's the extent of it. Life circumstances collide with her detective work to reveal the identity of the body shattering her innocence. Told from her perspective and one in 1921, this book keeps you turning pages!

2019 Book 2: My high school book club members chose this for our next read. It‘s about the Tulsa Race Riots of 1921. Since I‘m from Oklahoma, I‘m shocked I hadn‘t heard of this sad event. The book is written from an alternating modern-day mixed race girl and 1921 white boy. Rowan finds a skeleton buried behind her house, and the two characters are connected through this death. Very intriguing read so far!! #2

Why do I love historical fiction?! They just make me angry! Really interesting book with tons of evaluation and information about racism. Honestly, the exact same crap is happening now so I couldn't even be like "man, thank God it's not like that anymore!"

Great read! It reads like a mystery and I thoroughly enjoyed the alternating viewpoints between the past and modern day. I learned something about the Tulsa race riot in 1921 that I had never learned about. Highly recommended.

I started this book in May from the Library and abandoned it when I had no option for renewal. I decided to get the book and start again so I could watch the author chat from the MMD Summer Book Club. LOVED this book! Every high school student should be required to read this book (along with The Help). What an amazing telling of the Tulsa race riots. A fictional account of a real riot in 1921 that I'd never heard about - and will be researching now.
A YA novel told in the present day by Rowan, a bi-racial teen who intends to find the identity of the skeleton unearthed by a construction crew behind her home. Alternating chapters are told by William, a bi-racial teen in 1921 who survived the riot.
While I wanted the story to give me more, it kept me guessing and was a decent YA read.

Can you really like a book while also finding it hard to read? That is what my experience was with this book. The dual narrative and the mystery in it were very engaging. But the historical parts were sometimes hard to read, but that's part of what books can do for us -- make us aware of parts of history (and the present) that are hard to face.

It took me a while to finish this and I was iffy at first, but it ended up being a great read. Thanks to this book and Between Shades of Grey, I've learned that I really enjoy historical fiction. For both books, I actually wasn't aware of the events that occurred before reading so it was interesting to have that added level of learning also while reading a fiction book.

An intriguing book, full of suspense, murder + centuries old Jim Crow. The storyline flashes easily between it's two main characters;
Will Tillman 17--Tulsa race riots of 1921
Rowan Chase 17--present day, finder of skeletal remains on her families property.

Rowan tries to solve the mystery while her own life is uncertain. I love how the plot raises more questions than provides answers making it hard to put down. A wonderful intensive read.

Wow this book was good! It combines finding a skeleton in an outbuilding with flashbacks telling the story of how it got there & who it was. This is all set against a backdrop of racial tension today and the race riots in Tulsa in 1921. In glad I saw this in the #modernmrsdarcy summer reading guide.

YA take on the 1921 Tulsa Race Riot. Not as well-developed as I'd hoped, but still a very good read. Def going to hand this one over to my 15-year-old.

This book tells a compelling story and will engage you from beginning to end. Based on an actual event, and told with a back and forth between present and past, the two narrators stories intertwine in an interesting historical YA novel. If I hadn't known it was YA, I wouldn't have categorized it as such. A really good book. 📚❤️

A great YA book about an event I was not familiar with--the race riot in Oklahoma in which Greenland was burned to the ground and hundreds of African Americans were ruthlessly murdered. The author pairs this with a current day story line in which the main character uncovers a dead body and as she uncovers the story about what happened, she, an African American, must face racial issues in her life that stem from the beliefs of those in the past.

OK. I have issues. TBR issues. I always laugh when I'm told to show my TBR for a particular readathon because, seriously, it's sometimes impossible to choose. But I use these readathon weekends to try to pare down the pile and it truly does help. At least it helps me to try and prioritize. Mostly. *sigh*. #LitsyPartyOfOne #EclecticReadathon

Wow, just wow. How do I even begin to describe such a gut wrenching and brutally honest book?
This really was something else. It had me in tears for the last few chapters. And continuous crying for multiple pages does not happen often for me so take that as a recommendation in its self!
Honestly go pick up a copy of this book.
Also I'm not sure why the quality has come out so bad. So apologies for that!

Murder mystery meets historical fiction in this tale told through alternating timelines. Through Rowan (present day) and William (1921) we learn about the horrific night when Tulsa burned. It is sad to admit that I never learned about the race riots that took place in Tulsa in 1921 until I read this book. I love how the author prompts us to reflect on race relations in the past and the present.

Excellent story that combines a mystery with a real but hardly discussd historical event that took place in Tulsa Oklahoma in 1921 (at least I had not heard of this event). Alternating timelines, engaging writing, great characters, a bit of a surprise conclusion, and well-researched story elements made for really good reading. Very glad I read this. #MMDBookClub

Okay, so despite all the loving recommendations for Where'd You Go Bernadette? I decided to give Dreamland Burning a try and I think I'll stick with it.
