Just finished reading. I must say the writing was a bit repetitive and it seem to only focus on the vampire and how he was so protective over Diana. There was a lot of ruckus , but nothing really happened? I mean I‘m glad I finished it but did I love it? No, not really. 4 ⭐️ ‘s

Cheshirecat913 I was the same way about the book. I have the other two but just didn't have the drive to read them. 1d
Nevermore88 I don‘t have the other two but I‘m not sure if I‘m going to get it. I‘m afraid it may be the same as this book. Long and never getting to the point 1d

I've been recovering from surgery this week and have actually felt too tired mostly to even read. In between naps I've finally started watching A Discovery of Witches, which has been on my watch list for ages! I haven't read the books, although @Kimberlone has read the first. So far a bit dull, but Matthew Goode is enough to keep me watching till it picks up 😍 Should I read the series? #witches #adaptations #surgery #recovery

LaurenReads I liked the first book, but then couldn‘t finish the second one. 2d
Saknicole @LaurenReads that's the same thing @kimberlone said. If I'm jonesing after season 1 I might try! 2d
Kimberlone I have the second and third books. You can have them if you want to try. I kind of think the books are like a mix between outlander and twilight 2d

Today‘s #colormepretty is #blue!

I‘ve already talked about ACOTAR, Harry Potter, Eragon, and Carry On.

Before the Fall I read because of My Favorite Murder and I really liked it.

The Lovely Bones was a good book until the end and then it was weird.

If I Stay I loved (hello cellos!) but I‘ve never seen the movie. I met the author and she‘s lovely too.

Prisoner of Cell 25 was interesting but I‘m not sure if I‘ll finish that series...

At first, listening to this book I was bored with the world building, but before I knew it I was on chapter 5 and was wholely hooked into the story between Diana, Matthew and Ash Mole! It's 24 hrs of discovering the mysteries of Diana and her parents' deaths. Highly recommended!

Between a soso and a pan. I did enjoy the plot and world building in this but the writing made it absolutely impossible, it was so cliche, particularly the romance sections but just all of it, there wasn‘t a character that felt believable. It‘s a pity cause I like the concept and would like to finish the series but I don‘t know if I can do any more of Harkness‘ prose.

GatheringBooks oh that is sad to hear. i was looking forward to reading it for our witches theme in oct-dec. 3w
Caroline2 I struggled with this one too. I enjoyed the plot and concept but yeah it is cliched and sooo long winded. How many cups of tea can that girl drink?! 🙄 3w

Amiable I agree. Wasn‘t a fan of this book. I couldn‘t continue with the series. 3w
Kimberlone I liked the first one well enough, but couldn‘t make myself finish the second and basically gave up on this series. Very Outlander meets Twilight. 3w
currerbelle I don't remember any particular thoughts about the prose, but I did like that I could feel all the research that had gone into it. There was a great sense of atmosphere. And I enjoyed imagining myself at the Bodleian Library. 3w
Emilymdxn @currerbelle maybe I just didn‘t appreciate the research because I used to go a lot and so that probably leads to not appreciating it being an evocative portrayal of the library for me 🤷‍♀️ I guess no one feels that spellbound or carried away by a book painting a picture of their backyard lol, if it had been Harvard where I‘ve never been I‘d probably have loved that 3w

For lovers of fantasy and history alike. Deborah Harkness shows us a world where witches, vampires, and daemons walk amongst us. Despite being a witch, the protagonist strives to be “normal“ and wants to focus on her career, until a mysterious, magical manuscript places her in the middle of a struggle between the three kinds of creatures. I couldn't put it down. Well written with lovable characters.

Ok I‘ve just finished the Tv series! Who wants to discuss below with me? I thought they hit high points well but didn‘t understand why they changed some of the smaller points 🤷‍♀️

PatriciaU I did not like the production much. I thought the roles were badly cast and just couldn‘t get past that. 1mo
BethM @PatriciaU I don‘t disagree. I like Em, Sarah, and Marthe- everyone else missed the mark a bit for me. 1mo
PatriciaU Weird thing is I thought Alex Kingston would have made a good Diana! Or Billie Piper. And Isabeau was a disappointment. 1mo
BethM @PatriciaU I can see that with Alex but she‘s a bit too old. Billie would‘ve made my heart sing. Isabeau needed to be more like the Baroness in Sound of Music in my mind. 1mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I did not expect to love this, so I‘m glad I took a chance. The closest thing I can think to describe it is #Outlander (but not lol) with a love story similar to #Twilight. It is witches, vampires, & a tiny bit demons...but not in an overpowering way. I also watched the first season of the show....it is followed very closely, yet it is its own version at the same time. I loved them both and look forward to book 2.

You know that one book that you turn to when everything in life turns upside down and inside out?

Yeah, I am there. I need comfort and predictability.

After 10 days of high fever my daughter caught a smaller less scary bug (just a cough and a low grade fever). But Tomorrow will be her first day back at school since the 18th..... And now my mom is in the hospital. Yesterday she had two blood transfusions and today is scheduled for surgery. 😔

The winner of my next book is: A Discovery of Witches. I‘ve seen this on book lists many times, & I‘ve been recommended it a few times (based on my love for #Outlander). It has been a book I‘ve ignored because I don‘t normally do this kind of fantasy or witches. I heard there was a tv show, so I watched the first episode today & got started on the book. Umm...I‘m hooked. I‘m going to read the book before watching anymore. #LibraryBook

I have to say I have quite mixed feelings about this book. I loved the first half but at the end it got too Twiglight-y for me. The potential of what the book started as was not fulfilled for me and the story came out very mediocre. There were also some inconsistencies and the time travel aspect that did not seem right. I don't have any desire to start the second book to see how the story continues.

megzlynn I felt the same! I tried starting the second book and didn‘t even read a whole chapter before I gave up. 2mo

It took me a little over a month to read this book, but I found it enjoyable. I liked the history component, even if it was history that I was not familiar with. I also like the romance that was a slow-build, but I did feel that it was a tad rushed toward the middle and end. Diana was a smidge annoying and Matthew was a little overbearing at parts, but the characters were still well done. The plot, though slow at times, was also great.

This book was splendid! It's a #chunkster, but I could hardly put it down. There's so much more insight into how the relationship between Diana and Matthew unfolds than what the tv series shows (of course!). In fact I'm finally understanding many aspects of some of the show's scenes now that I've read the book. 😁 This history nuggets implanted in the book are delightful to this history nut! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

WHAT KIND OF ENDING IS THAT!? I fully intended to read a different book/series next, but I was not at all expecting anything that happened in the last 100 pages of this, and I need to know what happens!!!! As someone who has a hard time picking up a book that has a Goodreads rating lower than 3.8 (I‘m still trying to stop this habit 😂) or even if a book is written in present tense (it drives me crazy!!) I was confused at this book‘s relatively low score. And now 300+ pages in, I‘m baffled. I love the writing and detail, love the characters, and the overall plot is unlike anything else I‘ve read. Nothing like a good forbidden love.

Oh, I really tried with this book and I just can‘t. I don‘t like the writing, I find the characters wooden, and 200 pages in, almost nothing has happened. I‘m starting to roll my eyes regularly, so I‘m calling it.

PatriciaU I enjoyed the books in this series, but after watching the TV adaptation, I‘m questioning that! The performances incredibly wooden. I can‘t decide if it‘s terrible casting, or if the story is just that bad. 3mo
