🎉NEW BOOK DAY🎉 The world of publishing winds down at the end of the year, but there are still a few great new releases on the way. What are you excited to read? 📚❤️📚

It‘s December 1st, which means it is the start of an exciting month of reading for me! Yes, reading books is ALWAYS amazing, but we have round-up shows on All the Books! all month, so I have no structured reading for the next few weeks. I usually spend the month trying to get to new releases that I missed, reading ahead for the new year, and squeezing in more backlist. SPOILER: It‘s an epic nerd purr! What are your reading plans this month? 📚📚📚

BookNAround You might be the only person besides me I‘ve ever seen shelve her books like this! 2w
Liberty @BookNAround You can fit more on a shelf this way. 2w
BookNAround @Liberty I know. Given the appalling number of books I have it was the only way I could get them all on shelves. Of course, I‘ve long outgrown them all fitting as I‘m up to almost 15,000 but it worked for a while. 😂 2w
vivastory Having finished Borne only a few hours ago, I'm looking forward to the release of Vandermeer's "Dead Astronauts" on Tuesday even more so than previously 2w
Kangaj1 Trying to finish my reading challenges (I won't get them all done). I am almost done with the new Louise Penny and next up is Magpie Murders. So excited! 2w

I‘ve spent much of this week trying to fight off a bad cold/headache, which I am still trying to evict. At least the sun has made an appearance today while I am camped out on the couch. Y‘all know I read a lot of books. And I enjoy many of them. I really love several of them. And then there are a couple every year I want to rub against everyone‘s face until they read it. This is one of those books. 🧡

ALL THIS COULD BE YOURS is a searing indictment of familial obligation that asks just what we really owe each other. It examines the gray areas of life with all the sharp edges, and the decisions we make and are made for us.🧡🏆🧡

If I could have any superpower, it would be the ability to stop time, so I could sit and read books indefinitely. But I also have so many questions about this:
◾️
Would I get hungry and still have to eat?
◾️
Would I still require sleep?
◾️
Would everyone else be frozen in time?

Not that I‘ve spent a lot of time thinking about this. 🤣

The Secret History | Donna Tartt
post image

“It is better to know one book intimately than a hundred superficially.” I was 16 when I first read The Secret History, and it mesmerized me. Here was this lush, sinister novel filled with drugs and sex and murder and love, all being perpetrated by six humans not much older than me, who had recently achieved their freedom from their homes. (Cont. below in six comments)

Liberty And Donna Tartt made being a conflicted new-adult seem so sexy and interesting. I couldn‘t wait until I had conflicted new-adult problems! SPOILER: My new-adult problems were never this sexy or interesting. Nor have I murdered anyone. (Like I‘d admit it anyway.) (cont.) 3mo
Liberty As I was saying, I was 16 when I first read The Secret History. It was 1992, the year it came out. And I have reread it every year since then. (That‘s 27 times now for those of you playing along at home.) (cont.) 3mo
Liberty Why? Well, first because it was my favorite book as a teenager, and then because it‘s fascinating to see what you pick up on that you may have missed, and also what your brain focuses on at different times in your life. (Cont.) 3mo
See All 15 Comments
Liberty And because rereading is comforting. You lose things and pets and people, but books never go away. You can always find it again to read. (Cont.) 3mo
Liberty I did in fact lose my first copy. It was the victim of a leaky bottle of engine oil in the trunk on a road trip. Which is too bad, because that copy was amazing. One year I underlined all the instances of ‘the‘ in the book, another year it was every ‘and‘. I had a different highlighter color for each of the six main characters. I underlined my favorite sentences and paragraphs on almost every page. It was a thing of beauty. (Cont.) 3mo
Liberty All of this is to say that I found Secret History stickers on Redbubble and I am overjoyed. ❤️📚❤️ 3mo
MelissaSue81 I need to read this! What a wonderful ode to this book. 3mo
Caterina When I told my high school Latin teacher that I was going to be a classics major in undergrad, he handed me a used copy of this book and told me it captured classics departments perfectly. I was both relieved and disappointed to find that not altogether true. 😂😂😂 Adored this book, unfortunately my original copy is now with an ex... 🤷‍♀️ 3mo
Kimberlone I didn‘t read this book until I was an adult, but I have very similar feelings about Perks of Being a Wallflower, which I did read when I was a teenager and felt like a book that was a secret to just me 3mo
Hooked_on_books Great story. I‘m glad you shared this. ☺️ 3mo
marleed OMG - I loved your story. It‘s such a great testimony to rereading books. And even taking time to savor a single read. I‘m using this year to plow through books because I‘ve never spent a year doing that and always thought I wanted to. I‘m glad I plowed but now as the year comes nearer its end, I think I‘d prefer to plant myself in a book. 3mo
batsy I love this 💜 3mo
NHLibrarian I have these exact feelings for Geek Love. First read it when I was 16 and every reread it‘s a different story 🖤 3mo

All the HELL YEAHS to this book. Also, THE COVER. To steal a phrase from Doug Judy, the Pontiac Bandit: This cover definitely smushes standing up.🖤☠️🖤

saresmoore It really does, though. Doug Judy knows what‘s up. 3mo
