Dragon Hoops | Gene Luen Yang
21 posts | 18 read | 5 to read
In his latest graphic novel, Dragon Hoops, New York Times bestselling author Gene Luen Yang turns the spotlight on his life, his family, and the high school where he teaches.Gene understands stories--comic book stories, in particular. Big action. Bigger thrills. And the hero always wins. But Gene doesn't get sports. As a kid, his friends called him "Stick" and every basketball game he played ended in pain. He lost interest in basketball long ago, but at the high school where he now teaches, it's all anyone can talk about. The men's varsity team, the Dragons, is having a phenomenal season that's been decades in the making. Each victory brings them closer to their ultimate goal: the California State Championships.Once Gene gets to know these young all-stars, he realizes that their story is just as thrilling as anything he's seen on a comic book page. He knows he has to follow this epic to its end. What he doesn't know yet is that this season is not only going to change the Dragons's lives, but his own life as well.

I meant to pick away at DRAGON HOOPS over a few days. Instead, I read it in an afternoon. Gene Luen Yang took me right inside the players‘ lives, their (hella exciting) games, the history of basketball, and his own struggles as a comics creator at a career crossroads. It‘s exactly the sort of sports writing I love best: dynamic, engaging, and personal for everyone involved. 4.5 stars

I enjoyed this much more than I anticipated. I loved that the various histories of basketball were included and tailored to each player‘s family history.

#Eisner award nominee. For those who love basketball, this is a great story about a high profile California high school team.
For non-sports fans, Yang is very skilled at weaving an interesting story. There is plenty outside of the sports realm to keep you engaged.
Potential a good year for Yang with Superman Smashes the Klan also nominated

I've had such a tough finding books to capture my interest this month, so I was so happy for this one! I didn't realize this was a memoir, but the story was quick and enjoyable (it doesn't hurt that I love basketball!).

Book 7️⃣ of the #12booksof2020

I just love Gene Luen Yang‘s comics. They‘re so clear while still maintaining a sense of movement and excitement, and he‘s such a good, thoughtful writer. Have to admit I teared up a few times while reading this. 🥺

Caryl I just finished this one. I ❤️ Gene Luen Yang so much! 3y

Enjoyable graphic novel following a high school basketball team which also intersperses facts about the history of the game- I learned a lot! It‘s long, which is great - often graphic novels feel like they‘re over too soon. A good choice if you want something that‘s going to take you a while. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

📚BOOK MAIL! 📚 Almost all the rest of my online purchases from indie bookstores around the country have arrived! I have not read as many of these as the last batch, but I will fix that soon. I am very excited to get my last order, but once it arrives, I will be sad that no more are on the way, lol. (I can never have too many books!) Do you see any favorites here? 📚❤️📚

Dolly Haven‘t read any of these but really want to read Cantoras after listening to the sample. I think it‘s still in the running for the BookTube Prize so I‘ll HAVE to read it as I‘m a judge. 🙂 4y

20 books in March which is less than usual but as I am making an effort to vary my routine while at home, I‘m not surprised. It was a good month for good books though. It feels like it was a year ago I met Rae Carson & got an early look at The Rise of Skywalker which made the movie sooo much better. Dragon Hoops was my fav—laughed & cried. Maas is always entertaining, Alcott was surprising, Veronica Speedwell is the best & new Skottie a Young! ❤️

Phenomenal—a wonderful, hopeful & inspiring book. Think you aren‘t a fan of graphic novels? Think again. Think you aren‘t a fan of basketball? It doesn‘t matter—you don‘t need to care one iota about it to enjoy this book. For his first nonfiction book, Yang followed the basketball team at the high school where he once taught and in doing so, produced another remarkable story. I laughed, I cheered & yes, I even cried. For readers of all ages.

I‘m going to continue working my way through the books I picked up at #c2e2 this weekend. Super excited to get an ARC of the tagged book which is due to be released later this month (3/17). Yang never disappoints so I‘m looking forward to diving into his first nonfiction graphic novel.

Geenie What is this!? That‘s what I thought when when u first saw it. Super cool! 😎 🤩 4y

What a day! #c2e2 was fabulous and full of bookish delights. The morning started with a Dragon Hoops giveaway—and it wasn‘t just the book! The full giveaway included this shoebox and when you opened it the book was inside along with a little basketball and hoop. Very cute. This is Yang‘s first nonfiction graphic novel. He spent a year following a high school basketball team and this is his chronicle of that year. Can‘t wait to read it!
