Waste Tide
Waste Tide | Chen Qiufan
24 posts | 10 read | 11 to read
Award-winning author Chen Qiufan's Waste Tide is a thought-provoking vision of the future. Translated by Ken Liu, who brought Cixin Liu's Hugo Award-winning The Three Body Problem to English-speaking readers. Mimi is drowning in the world's trash. Shes a waste worker on Silicon Isle, where electronics -- from cell phones and laptops to bots and bionic limbs are sent to be recycled. These amass in towering heaps, polluting every spare inch of land. On this island off the coast of China, the fruits of capitalism and consumer culture come to a toxic end. Mimi and thousands of migrant waste workers like her are lured to Silicon Isle with the promise of steady work and a better life. They're the lifeblood of the islands economy, but are at the mercy of those in power. A storm is brewing, between ruthless local gangs, warring for control. Ecoterrorists, set on toppling the status quo. American investors, hungry for profit. And a Chinese-American interpreter, searching for his roots. As these forces collide, a war erupts -- between the rich and the poor; between tradition and modern ambition; between humanitys past and its future. Mimi, and others like her, must decide if they will remain pawns in this war or change the rules of the game altogether. "An accomplished eco-techno-thriller with heart and soul as well as brain. Chen Qiufan is an astute observer, both of the present world and of the future that the next generation is in danger of inheriting." David Mitchell, New York Times bestselling author of Cloud Atlas At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Waste Tide is set in the near future in a Chinese island where waste is dumped and sorted by poor & despised workers brought from the mainland's countryside. Native islanders are better off, but pollution is horrendous for all. 3 local family clans - or mafias if you want to be blunt - unofficially rule the place. 100 pages in and I love it!

I tried with this one. I enjoy the writing but don‘t have any desire to continue on with the story. The characters feel a little flat and I‘m already over 100 pages in and it‘s going so slowly. Also, based on reviews I‘ve read, it seems like the only female character in this book gets put through a bunch of awful things just to further the male plots in the story and that‘s not something I‘m interested in reading at the moment 🤷🏼‍♀️ #bookspin

Been making my way slowly through my #bookspin book but I can‘t seem to focus on anything. I think today is a day to lay on the couch, nap and watch documentaries. Fingers crossed I can get this book done by the end of the month.

Number 1 of #bookspin and #bookspinbonanza

I liked the start of the book a lot, then it got weird, at the end it got better again. Therefore still a Pick, even though I'm still left a little disappointed. But it's an important topic Chen writes about and we sure all should rethink our behaviour!

2. Yes. I read German passably well, and am hooked on Perry Rhodan, a German space-opera series I will never finish.

Mehso-so

Part environmental thriller, part cyberpunk sci-fi, and part male people doing things and the only female person has things happening to her 🙄
I liked some parts, but others didn't work for me.

"What are you?"
"A nuclear explosion that has been slowed down a million times; a byproduct of billion years of convergent evolution; your second personality and life insurance; the free will that emerges from quantum decoherence. I'm accidental; I'm inevitable. I'm a new error. I'm the master and the slave. I'm the huntress and the prey. I'm only a beginning."

another book I'm giving a 'pick with caveats' rating since I had fun reading this but it has glaring problems. the dystopian near-future setting, with its commentary on class issues and waste dumping, is vivd and brilliant. the plot, on the other hand is structured like a techno-thriller, which doesn't mesh as well with the setting. also wasn't a fan of the treatment of the female protagonist, who gets to suffer for the sake of man pain.

FINISHED. I think this is a pick for me. A lot of it went over my head. But it was a really different dystopia and it was refreshing to read one that wasn‘t about fertility OR doom to the United States. Really grateful to #LMPBC for putting this on my radar. It‘ll go out in the mail tomorrow! #wintergames #tbrread #teamfozziwig #24B42020

Loved this one, a thriller set in and around a Chinese island where the world's waste is sorted and processed, mostly by a barely-paid underclass. The world is Rich and intriguing and built through viewpoints of a terrific ensemble cast. (And yes, the story delivers on the mecha promised in the cover.)

Mailed this off to @Hestapleton today! (should arrive Monday or Tuesday). I have a lot of thoughts about this book - uneven in places - but overall, I enjoyed it. I'll be interested to see what others think, as I may be ( outside of the Chinese speaking world) the most 'perfect' target audience for Chen's debut novel.

(This isn't the cover I have, but it is very cool! )

This grim near-future novel is set in a world of electronic garbage, sorted and handled by migrant workers who are treated as if they were garbage too. Mimi, one of the so-called "waste people," draws the attention of a local clan boss and suffers terrible, unthinkable consequences; meanwhile, the American representative of a global recycling conglomerate makes promises while pursuing a secret agenda. A visceral, disturbing vision of the future.
