Something Is Killing the Children Vol. 1
Something Is Killing the Children Vol. 1 | James Tynion IV
32 posts | 31 read | 30 to read
When children begin to go missing in the town of Archer's Peak, all hope seems lost until a mysterious woman arrives to reveal that terrifying creatures are behind the chaos - and that she alone will destroy them, no matter the cost. IT'S THE MONSTERS WHO SHOULD BE AFRAID. When the children of Archer's Peak--a sleepy town in the heart of America--begin to go missing, everything seems hopeless. Most children never return, but the ones that do have terrible stories--impossible details of terrifying creatures that live in the shadows. Their only hope of finding and eliminating the threat is the arrival of a mysterious stranger, one who believes the children and claims to be the only one who sees what they can see. Her name is Erica Slaughter. She kills monsters. That is all she does, and she bears the cost because it must be done. GLAAD Award-winning writer James Tynion IV (The Woods, Batman: Detective Comics) teams with artist Werther Dell'Edera (Briggs Land) for an all-new story about staring into the abyss. Collects Something is Killing the Children #1-5.

4/5

There are monsters in the woods and only the children can see them. A very spooky, horror read.

I think if I were to describe a near perfect first volume, it would be this one. Enough craziness, action, and story given to keep me engaged; but also, plenty of tidbits dropped to keep me wondering about future volumes. The title is the synopsis and it seems a fairly ‘simple‘ storyline, but they‘ve added so much more to keep it on the fun side of crazy.

Our main character, featured on the cover is most definitely a killer. Also if you want a good horror graphic novel with Buffy vibes-I highly recommend this series!

Awesome graphic novel, if bloody. Combines a missing persons mystery with a monster feature. It also contains a badass heroine. I loved the illustrations. There are 3 more volumes.

Something is Killing the Children could have very well served as an alternate title for IT & volume 1 of the series has many of the same vibes as King's novel. I LOVED this gn about a Wisconsin town where monsters are all too real & only children can see them until a stranger arrives to help. I'm so happy I have vol. 2 already checked out from the library.

vivastory Ive only read vol 1, but I think you'd like this @Addison_Reads 5mo

Decided to change it up a bit today and read this. It's fabulous!

And my little boy, Ace, is in a cuddling mood today after a rough night of thunderstorms. Very rare for him since he's usually in a playful terrible two mood. 😁

What a great introduction to this horror series. I‘m so happy I stumbled upon this graphic novel while browsing the comic bookstore. The artwork combines with the storyline draws you in and makes it so you have to keep reading to see what happens next. #Scarathlon2021 #TeamHendrix #Screamathon2021 #BFC2021 #Spookoweenreadathon #Wickedathon #BookSlinBingo +76 pts

Brutal and creepy. Enough happens that the mysteries aren't frustrating or obnoxious. Looking forward to volume 2.

Engaging monster hunter graphic novel series. So far so good. The art is really eye catching and the story is building. Interested to see where this goes.

The artwork is very cool. The story line is fantastic and elusive. It leaves a bit of mystery. I‘ll definitely be continuing on with this series.

4🌟 I really enjoyed this volume, and I am so happy that they decided to do an extended series. The art is fantastic and there are a bunch of elements that I'm still very curious about. Warning: This is a very gory comic, but I don't consider it distasteful. Just a definite horror comic.

This was a fun, spooky, quite straightforward graphic novel where (you guessed it) something is killing the children and a mysterious woman arrives to kill the monster. It wasn‘t breaking any boundaries really but I enjoyed it and liked the characters and art.

Excellent horror. It is dark--literally and figuratively--and bloody with an intriguing storyline. I'm not always crazy about the art style, but I'll stay for the story and characters (one of the main characters is queer and it isn't about him being queer!).

TW for harm to children.

Kenyazero Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this one! I've been thinking about reading it for a bit. I don't love horror, but I usually try to check out stories with queer protagonists. I'll probably give volume 1 a read sometime. 2y
dylanisreading @Kenyazero Of course! I usually try to check out stories with queer protagonists as well, especially comics and fantasy. If you have access to Hoopla through your public library, you can borrow the individual issues that way. They currently have issues 1-9 on there. Then you don't have to invest in the entire first volume, unless you want to. 😁 2y
Kenyazero @Bianca That's my plan! It's been in my "likes" for a while bcause I use that list to track titles I am considering borrowing. 2y

I've been having trouble finding a book that keeps my attention, but I read volume one of Ms. Marvel (by G. Willow Wilson) last night so I'm continuing with comics. I really like James Tynion IV's work but haven't checked this out yet. (For some reason, Litsy doesn't have issue #1 in their database, and that's what I borrowed from Hoopla.)

I just loved this comic. Right from the start, this comic had me in suspense.

The story didn't reveal too much too quickly & had me in suspense the whole way through.

The artwork was fantastic & included some really great full page panels

I think this is my new favourite comic & it's probably the best comic of this genre that I've read since reading Locke & Key which is saying a lot. I can't wait to read more of this series

I recently got a Netgalley account and this was one of the first ARCs I received.
I really liked this graphic novel. Somehow, on my first read, the text bubbles were missing. The story worked without those, too, so the art is damn expressive. It was better with the full story though.
Horror, monsters only children can see, and a talking stuffed Octopus. I can see myself picking up this and the next book when it is released at my comic book store.

“You‘re James, right?”
“Are you going to hurt me?”
“Probably not.”
“Cool.”
I‘m interested in how the gaze of all the characters we are meant empathize with in issue #1 is wholly or partially obscured. It‘s as if we‘re meant to empathize with them, but not too much.

NotCool Or, now that I think about it, as if their true vision of the monstrous has cost them, in some sort of Odin-esque deal. 3y
