Crinoline_Laphroaig Question 9 - If a Reread, did you view differently through older eyes? 2y
Liatrek 1. 1st read
2. Mix
3. Maybe??? Big Maybe
4. Meh
5. It was interesting and not what I expected. I always thought this was sweeping tragic romance but it‘s the exact opposite. There were no characters to love or root for or even love to hate.
6. The book cover 🤣
7. Heathcliff man this guy absolutely the worse
8. Yes
9. I‘m still perplexed, baffled and dumbfounded at how this story ever got labeled a romance.
2y
ravenlee @Liatrek 9 - I think someone read as far as older Catherine‘s stupid speech about sharing a soul with Heathcliff and only skimmed the rest, and decided it must be a tragic love story. 2y
BarkingMadRead Second read, 📖 3. Yes 4. Loved 5. I like all the drama and the twists and turns 6. I love Nelly. She tries so hard to keep everyone on the straight and narrow 7. I hate heathcliff. I know he‘s necessary for the plot lol but he‘s so evil. 9. Definitely a classic. Definitely not a romance. 2y
Librarybelle 1. Reread 2. Print 3. Yes 4. Loved 5. Loathed the characters but loved the atmosphere 6. Favorite thing - doom and gloom, so gothic. 7. Least favorite - Heathcliff (so not a fan of him!) 8. Yes, it deserves to be a classic! 9. Emily Brontë has such a dark mind!! 2y
rubyslippersreads 1. Reread
2. Mostly ebook, but a bit of audio
3. No. I‘ve read it several times, and this time I liked it the least
4. Meh
5. I couldn‘t sympathize with any of the characters (except Isabella‘s dog) ⬇️
2y
ravenlee 2nd time; print; twice is plenty; disliked; can‘t find a character to care about in the slightest; I like the moor; Heathcliff‘s monomania; eh, the writing is superb but the story isn‘t, so I‘m on the fence; can people please stop calling Heathcliff a romantic hero?! 2y
rubyslippersreads 6. The moors
7. Heathcliff and Cathy‘s relationship. Obsession, not love
8. A classic for the quality of the writing
9. I think this got labeled “romance” after the 1939 movie, which concentrates on the love “quadrangle,” omits the next generation, and includes a romantic ending (which apparently was added by the studio, against the director‘s wishes)
2y
rubyslippersreads @ravenlee @Liatrek See my comment about the movie. The Hollywood version is much more romanticized. 😏 (edited) 2y
CrowCAH Reread. Like. Classic worthy yes. 2y
inthegreensandblues 1/2. Second read, audio.
3. Could revisit someday.
4. Enjoyed this time (hated first read 10 yrs ago). Better when not expecting a "great love story."
5. Best: Setting
6. Worst: Heathcliff ?
7. Classic for the writing and the audacity! That Emily is as mysterious a figure as any she wrote.
2y
inthegreensandblues 8. I felt sympathy for Hareton throughout this time. I like his and Cathy's ending, that the family gets a chance for a reset after decades of Heathcliff's systematic destruction, and the failures of the whole prior generation. 2y
Andrea313 1-2: Re-read, print 3. I'd like to read it again a couple of years. 4. Someplace between "loved" and "meh". The story kept me engaged and wondering. 5. Favorite thing was how atmospheric it was and how present the landscape is throughout - Emily is a solid writer. 6. So. Much. Melodrama. 7. Definitely a classic! There is power in the writing, and in examining the structure, and the themes of love/control/abuse. 2y
Andrea313 8. The word I keep coming back to is "unrelenting". Emily Brontë doesn't give a shit about our feelings! 9. Yes, I viewed this differently through older eyes. I first read it in high school and it didn't make much of an impression. I think I didn't know what to do with it, after reading Austen and Charlotte Brontë- there was no love or moral integrity or anything to strive for here. As an adult, I really respect it as a full-on epic tragedy. 2y
quietjenn Reread
Mostly Kindle, a little print
Doubtful, but you never know
Mostly loved it. It‘s so over-the-top, with everything is turned up to 11. And honestly, sometimes it‘s really nice and cathartic to hate everyone in a book
Setting and how Gothic it is
Original Cathy (how did she manage to get both of these dudes to be devoted to/obsessed with her) and almost everything about Heathcliff
Conflicted, but not entirely convinced
For sure
2y
melissajayne 1) ReRead 2) 📱 3) Maybe, but I doubt it 4) 😶 5) I felt it was too long 6) Can‘t think of one thing 7) could have been shortened 8) yes it does deserve to be a classic 9) Fell flat at the end (edited) 2y
AnneCecilie 1. Second read 2. Print 3. Maybe 4. Loved. I wanted to read what happened next. 5. Maybe the ending, that the revenge ends 6. Heathcliff 7. Yes 8. I started wondering if Heathcliff was born so revengeful or if it was the bullying by Hindley and overhearing Catherine say he wasn‘t good enough that did it. 9. Yes. I wonder how 20 something me could see this as an unhappy love story. What was I thinking? (edited) 2y
suvata 1. Reread
2. Print and Audio
3.. Yes I would read again
4. Loved 😍
5. I‘m A big fan of 19th century Gothic novels
6. At times it seemed to drag on
7. Most definitely a classic because people are still interested in and reading it today

2y
IndoorDame 1. Reread 2. Print 3. Yes. In a few years 4. Loved 5. Gothic atmosphere 6. Naming scheme was confusing even on second read 7. Yes, because the emotions are so raw it keeps us coming back 8. I found the symmetry in the ending really satisfying artistically (though tragic emotionally) 2y
Bookwormjillk 1. 1st 2. Kindle 3. Maybe 4. 😍5. Unexpected in a good way 6. The names! 7. Yes, maybe not on its own but as part of the Bronte body of work 8. Great pick for a buddy read 2y
nanuska_153 1 Re-read 2 📖 3 Yes,I'll go for a 3rd read in a couple of years 4 😍 5 I love the writing, the characters and all the tea! 6 Heathcliff's madness, Hareton and Cathy being united by their love for reading and the ☕ in general 7 Joseph's speeches, whatever they were about 8 Definitely! 2y
i.besteph 1.Partial reread (I dnf‘d it the 1st time 😂)2. Kindle! 3. Definitely no, read it. So I never have to read it again. 4. Hated 🤢 5. I couldn‘t get past the psychopathic protagonist 😖💯 6. Not a thing per se but I loved Nelly! 7. Joseph‘s gibberish 8. Personally no. 9. Predictable but kudos to the author. Everyone who read will come to hate Heathcliff and then sympathize him. If she could bring those emotions in a reader, she‘s written it well.
2y
bio_chem06 1. 1st read 2. Print 3. Nope, read it now I never have to do it again 4. Hated, I found the writing confusing and just never got into it. 5. All the hidden meanings in the writing was great. 6. I can‘t time off a favorite😕 7. I think the fact a female writer of the time created a work of art is why it should be a classic, but I never realized I wasn‘t missing anything from not reading it. 2y
Crinoline_Laphroaig 1st Read - Mix of Print/Kindle/Audio - Never Again - Hated It - Nothing but Unlikable Characters - Description of the landscape - Making fun of someone trying to learn to read - Classic in its example of crazy gothic - Heathcliff is no Darcy. #teamdarcy 2y
mollyrotondo I know you tallied 1-4 already but I wanted to give my responses ☺️1.1st Read 2. Print 📖 3. Yes I would read again! 4. Loved 😍
5. I loved the darkness of the story and the characters. Extremely gothic. 6.Favorite thing was the critique of obsessive love and of nature v nurture 7. Least favorite was everything about Joseph 8. Definitely deserves to be a classic 9. Excellent Romantic novel and it‘s not Emily‘s fault people don‘t get it.
2y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @mollyrotondo you're so welcome! Glad you add your answers. I've loved seeing everyone ones. 2y
SarahBookInterrupted 1. 1st Read kinda, I tried to read it 10 years ago and bailed once Heathcliff started to be treated badly when the father died.
2. Print
3.. No.
4. Meh 😶
5. None of the characters were really lovable and most of them ended becoming the worst versions of themselves.
5. That she got to see her father before he died.
6. When Nelly left Hareton as a toddler and all of Joseph talking
7. Yes

This Weekend's Thread for #PemberLittens
#WanderingThroughWutheringHeights Discussion.

Some have already went ahead and finished, which I totally understand. Heathcliff is now at top of my Most Hated Character List. 😡 I'm very tempted to read ahead just to see if he gets what he deserves.

If like me you're continuing on with Chapter a Day, will finish reading on February 5th. After that will have some Overall Book Discussion.

#teamdarcy

ravenlee I‘ve often lumped WH and Romeo and Juliet together as the most frequently misidentified “love” stories. On this reread, I realize the injustice I‘ve been doing to R&J. Heathcliff is in no way a romantic lead! 2y
mollyrotondo @ravenlee 😆 R&J is more of a lust story than a romance story but Heathcliff is definitely not in any way a romantic character. At least Romeo had some smooth moves and wasn‘t out to inflict lifelong torture and destruction. 2y

#PemberLittens

Ch 52:Lizzy gets a reply from Mrs. G to her inquiry about Darcy at Lydia‘s wedding: Darcy actually found them in London, tried to get Lydia away, and when that didn‘t work, arranged the marriage, paid for everything, including debts of a man he has personal reasons to hate, and insisted all of the credit go to Mr. G with no mention of himself. To recap, Darcy:
-is so rich
-is totally hot
-lives at Pemberley
-is genuinely decent

😍

sprainedbrain Also, Wickham gets one more cringe-inducing, smarmy, lying-jackass scene in with Lizzy, who masterfully shuts him down. 👊🏻 4y
