Ghost | Jason Reynolds
Ghost wants to be the fastest sprinter on his elite middle school track team, but his past is slowing him down in this first electrifying novel of a brand-new series from Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe Awardwinning author Jason Reynolds. Ghost. Lu. Patina. Sunny. Four kids from wildly different backgrounds with personalities that are explosive when they clash. But they are also four kids chosen for an elite middle school track teama team that could qualify them for the Junior Olympics if they can get their acts together. They all have a lot to lose, but they also have a lot to prove, not only to each other, but to themselves. Ghost has a crazy natural talent, but no formal training. If he can stay on track, literally and figuratively, he could be the best sprinter in the city. But Ghost has been running for the wrong reasonsit all starting with running away from his father, who, when Ghost was a very little boy, chased him and his mother through their apartment, then down the street, with a loaded gun, aiming to kill. Since then, Ghost has been the one causing problemsand running away from themuntil he meets Coach, an ex-Olympic Medalist who blew his own shot at success by using drugs, and who is determined to keep other kids from blowing their shots at life.

I‘ve watched a docfilm short and heard several interviews with Jason Reynolds, but this is the first of his books that I‘ve read. A YA story of home struggles, school difficulties, and a track coach who is there to inspire, motivate, and dispense love to kids in need of all of his wisdom and the team camaraderie he provides these young kids trying to find their way in the world.

Okay. Recently reread this book because track season has started. Honestly, all the feels. My track team probably knows more about me than anyone else in my life. I have run something similar to just about every workout that he does. My coaches have inspired me and pushed me so far. The characters were good, came to life, and most importantly, felt like an actual team. If I wasn‘t already on an awesome track team, this book would make me join one.

LibraryFairy Also Ghost‘s fart licks are actually fartleks and, though I hate them with a burning passion (I ran one today 😭), they make you FAST. 13mo

Castle Cranshaw, aka Ghost, learns to run when he & his mom wake in the middle of the night to escape their abusive household, Ghost‘s gun-toting, alcoholic father hot on their heels. It‘s the story of a lonely, angry kid finding purpose & community. I‘m so glad it exists. Between its pages, you can find some gorgeous, impactful passages, interweaving light & dark. But you can also find the phrase “fart licks.” This is a book written FOR kids.👇🏻

monalyisha 1/1: Maurice Sendak once said, “I don't write for children. I write & someone says it's for children.” That‘s not how Jason Reynolds writes. And thank goodness! He‘s doing important, valuable, necessary work. And he does it with style and grace. Selfishly, I desperately want to see what an adult novel of his would look like. The acknowledgements, which read, “May this book be breath”, tell me it would be beautiful. I want a book sans fart licks. (edited) 13mo
LibraryFairy OMG I loved this book! I‘m actually on an inner city track team and have been running track for years, so just wanted to let you know, fart licks are an actual type of speed workout. I‘ve run them, my track friends have run them, Olympians have probably run them. This book was probably one of the most accurate track books I‘ve ever read. Honestly, if the book didn‘t have fart licks, it wouldn‘t be a good track book. 13mo
monalyisha @LibraryFairy I did look them up after reading to confirm that they were real. Glad this book worked so well for you! It‘s so validating when you find something true to your experience. 13mo

A good middle grade read about sports (track in this case) and coaches and teammates that ultimately save lives. I loved Ghost‘s relationship with Mr. Charles and how it helps him overcome the trauma of his past. Hoping to teach this one to my students this year. 🌟🙌

Castle Cranshaw, a.k.a. Ghost, has only thought of running as a means of very literal escape. After finding himself on the Defenders track team, Ghost realizes that running can take him places he had never dreamed.

The growth of purpose in Ghost from the first pages to the last was great to see. He found a place where he could thrive as himself.

“..you can‘t run away from who you are, but what you can do is run toward who you want to be.”

Great story that takes on bullying, poverty, and trying to fit in, among other themes. Castle a.k.a. Ghost is a compelling character to like, and this is an inspiring story. I will look up the rest of the books in the Track series. 👍

Jason Reynolds is great. Despite not being an athlete myself, I enjoyed my daughter‘s track and soccer experiences. That and my love for Jason Reynolds drew this series to my attention. I enjoyed the track aspect and the MC‘s experiences. I love how Reynolds can blend difficult childhood experiences with common ones in an easy way. I‘m looking forward to the rest of the series.

I prefer MG to YA and enjoyed this story about a middle school kid tapped for the track team!

Castle (aka Ghost) doesn‘t fit in at his school because of his mom‘s job and financial situation. His dad is also in prison for violently attacking them. He shows up to track practice and runs against them as a joke, but the coach sees real promise and brings him onto the team. He helps Ghost work through his issues at home and at school. #AuthorAMonth

I read this book over the weekend and I really got into it a just had it laying around and I read it and they way that it just all flows together, I just love. Quick reads like this are some of my favourite books to read becuase there's just so little amount of pages but I feel like there's always more story to it. I felt like I was actually in the book.

And now my 3 weeks staycation has started. Can‘t wait to have time to read even more

Velvetfur Oohh I can't wait to read Invisible Women (when finished others)! Is it making you angry? I've heard it makes people angry when they read about all the injustice! 3y

A great coming of age story about a boy who finds himself through the track team. Due to a troubled home life and a “bad” neighborhood, Ghost gets into trouble at school which leads him to steal things and get into fights. However, his new track family teaches him to be better than that and that circumstances don‘t define who he is. A fast-paced middle grade book with likable characters. Fun audiobook. Will look for sequels.

I saw Jason Reynolds on a zoom call he did with my library for the March community read and just loved him. So, I grabbed Ghost from my library. This is a great, touching story about a troubled boy and the track coach who sees his potential (and sees a bit of himself in Ghost). It hits some tough topics, but without making them super heavy or uncomfortable. Now I‘m going to have to read the entire series.

Bradleygirl yes! they're all good and the kids are so different, I'm so glad to have found them & Reynolds's writing 3y

Loved this middle grade book. Ghost joins a city-wide track team and starts to come to terms with the trauma of his father having shot at him and his mother. Tackles complex issues in an understandable way. Lots of empathy for each character. Imparts lessons without feeling preachy.

Bookish song Nr. 19: Let it rock

This might be a bit to stereotypical, I'm sorry, but when the song popped up, Ghost just came to me. I saw him running through the city, making his way to a new life, building up a new kind of self-esteem and finding purpose in life. It just came to me like that and now it's here to stay...

Maybe cliche? but I finished this series about a group of 4 young track team members by Jason Reynolds this year, and it was so well worth it. I needed to hear those different voices in YA as someone who loves lots of classic YA literature (but it's nearly all about English/white kids).

ALSO this year some good ones (tagging below) 🔽

I am posting this review late because I read it earlier in the year for a postal bookswap,

I've always heard of Jason Reynolds in the context of being a good choice for "reluctant readers." I can definitely see the appeal here with sports, single parent, outsider, urban, black representation and more. I loved that Ghost isn't perfect but that the consequences take a while to show up. I love the "found family" element.

Litten family I am in need of some help. I am doing 7th and 8th grade ELA intervention this year for the first time-I teach art! Anyway these kids are pretty low and hate reading. I want to do some novel studies with them but want to use books they can relate to-no Old Yeller for us! I started reading Ghost to them and they are really enjoying it. Any other books that would be relevant and engaging that you can recommend would be amazing! Thanks!

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Not sure if this is the right level or too easy, but my son loved Fish in a Tree this year - he‘s in 6th grade. (He‘s not really a reader and loved it) - Also, my daughter read The Outsiders and loved it (but I haven‘t read it!) 5y

CoffeeK8 I second The Outsiders, I work with some very reluctant readers and they loved it. Also Holes is another good one. I‘d also look into graphics novels or audiobook options. Also are these classified kids or just low readers? That can make a difference in terms of what you need to modify for them. Also, build in time for them to choose their own books (or magazines) to read independently if you can, this helps with decreasing reluctance. 5y
TheBookHippie @LauraBeth I second this book it‘s a favorite here with kids I work with. (edited) 5y
hermyknee Holes is definitely a good one! My kids really enjoy it. The Percy Jackson books also work well and they‘ve recently been made into graphic novels! Nic Stone just wrote a middle grade novel: 5y

AsYouWish I agree with The Outsiders! I would also say Holes is a good one and in my past life as a sub, I subbed in a Sped. Ed reading class and we read Hoot (the students were 6th graders). And last year I was given our lower students for Intervention and I would try to play to their interests or pick out a few and give them the choice about which one they wanted. 5y
