Lancelyn Green's story-by-story introduction is an informative read, setting the stage for his selection of homages to Holmes. He states that he has been careful to collect stories that are written as serious 'apocrypha' rather than parodies, so I'm hoping for some quality entries 🔎📖
Paganini's violin concertos 1 & 2 seemed an appropriate musical accompaniment 🎻

Bookwomble My bookmark choice isn't my Sherlock Holmes one, as that's seen a fair bit of action the past couple of years. However, as one of the stories is "The Adventure of the Trained Cormorant," this one featuring a cormorant amongst a flock of other sea birds seemed a fitting choice ?

"Haven't you already taken part in pilfering from a distribution factory, ie, a supermarket?
In that case, you have come to understand that individual re-appropriation of goods stolen by the State & the employer class merely feeds the commodity process until it becomes a collective action & leads to total liquidation of the system, however...it is not enough to just repossess goods. One must also repossess the time and space stolen from us all."

There are so many songs about the moon I could have chosen to accompany this book, but it's a marvelous morning for a Moondance, so the romantic, mystic, Celtic soul of Van Morrison it is💚🩵💚

kspenmoll Perfect musical choice! This book intrigues me. 3mo
Bookwomble @kspenmoll Van is a mood 😌 If you're interested in Classical Greece, Regency England, and a reflective personal style of writing, then I'd say it's worth giving it a try 📖 🙂 3mo
TieDyeDude Such an iconic album! Thanks for sharing. 3mo

“If you can smile today, maybe you can laugh tomorrow.”

This thought of the main character sounds hopeful - it is hopeful - I fear it is likely to be unfulfilled.

While reading I'm listening to Norwegian composer/pianist Ketil Bjørnstad's album "The Nest", which hits the right note of melancholy and light ??

A Clockwork Orange | Anthony Burgess

My posts have been sadly deficient of David Bowie for too long! 😄

Driving to work on Tuesday, I was amused when David came on my playlist singing the line:
💬 Where the fuck did Monday go?

🎵 Girl Loves Me

Bookwomble David's final album has several references to his back catalogue, and Girl Love Me expands on his use of Burgess's nadsat slang on Ziggy Stardust, with some polari thrown in for good measure. A dark, unsettling and catchy track 🖤 (edited) 4mo
BarbaraBB Finally you‘re back to Bowie 😀 4mo

BarbaraBB Glad to hear that ❤️ 4mo
TieDyeDude That lyric video did not help me understand the song at all, but I like the moody vibe 4mo
Bookwomble @TieDyeDude No! 😆 Nadsat is Burgess's invented slang for Alex and his droogs in A Clockwork Orange, and polari is a working class cant developed to baffle the police, later adopted by the UK gay community before the decriminalisation of homosexuality in the late '60s. (Sorry for the TED Talk!) The Genius lyrics site has translations 😊 https://genius.com/David-bowie-girl-loves-me-lyrics 4mo
TieDyeDude @Bookwomble Wow, that is so cool. I'll definitely be digging into that soon 4mo

I've been meditating on what the right soundtrack for Her Majesty's Royal Coven would be, and then it just seemed obvious on several levels!

🎙️ Siouxsie and The Banshees

Bookwomble @Cathythoughts It's good, isn't it? 😊 I love John Cale 🖤 6mo
Leftcoastzen Oh goodness, I love Cale too ! Might be a tad dark for me currently.😄 6mo

Bookwomble @Leftcoastzen M:FANS is pretty dark. I love his perversity, though, in leaving the Velvet Underground as he said Lou was taking it too mainstream, and then his first solo album, Vintage Violence, is such a perfect pop album. Maybe slip that one on? 😊 6mo
Suet624 Oh, I had no idea he had an autobiography! 6mo
Bookwomble @Suet624 It's been on my to-buy list for years - I should get around to buying a copy! 6mo

TrishB Oh my daughter would love this! 7mo
Cathythoughts Lovely ❤️ 7mo
Bookwomble @ShyBookOwl @TrishB @Cathythoughts It's a nice book as an object and as a subject concept, though the first chapter reads like a Wikipedia entry of factoids rather than a coherent article with a beginning, middle and end. Hopefully, the other chapters will flow better. I'll report in due course 🧐 📝 7mo

The Honjin Murders | Seishi Yokomizo
post image

#TuesdayTunes @TieDyeDude

A koto plays a part in the plot of "The Honjin Murders", though as I'm near the beginning of the story, quite what its significance is I've yet to discover. However, the mention of the instrument immediately made me think of the sublime "Koto Song" by The Dave Brubeck Quartet, so their album "Jazz Impressions of Japan" is now my soundtrack ❤️ ??❤️
