Raiders of the Lost Heart
Raiders of the Lost Heart | Jo Segura
Rival archaeologists must team up on a secret Aztec expedition, or it could leave their careers-and hearts-in ruins. Dr. Socorro "Corrie" Mejia has a bone to pick . . . Literally. It's been her life goal to lead an expedition in search of the remains of her ancestor - an ancient warrior of the Aztec empire. But when she is invited to join an all-expenses-paid dig to do just that, Corrie is sure it's too good to be true . . . As the world-renowned expert, Corrie should be leading the expedition not sharing the glory with her disgustingly handsome grad school nemesis. Dr. Ford Matthews has been finding new ways to best her since they met, and the last thing they both need is a reminder of their rocky past. But with a thief lurking around their campsite, the pair are forced to keep their rivalry-and lingering attraction-under wraps. From money-hungry artifact smugglers, the Mexican authorities, and the lies between them closing in, there's only one way this all ends: explosively. A laugh-out-loud romcom with a twist. Perefct for fans of Ali Hazelwood, The Lost City and a good old fashioned enemies-to-lovers.

Okay. I‘m out. I wanted to like this so much but I just can‘t. So many things I hate from, I‘m going to walk in the jungle at night by myself, to I don‘t want to have this reputation but I‘m going to conduct myself in a way that perpetuates this reputation in front of people I barely know. 🙄 And what kind of person brings a vibrator, and fancy underwear (in case there‘s a night out) to an archeological dig but no batteries or condoms? Ugh.

Suet624 Hahah. Love this post. 2mo

I really wanted to love this book. Unfortunately, I never connected with the characters and I felt some of the scenes were awkward. On a positive note, I liked the plot. It just needed something more.. maybe a bit more polish. 3 ⭐️

A fun adventure, enemies to lovers romcom. I liked the whole Lara Croft/Indiana Jones/Goonies vibe. I also liked that the characters were older than 20. Yes, it wrapped up a little too quickly (the big drama all happens in the last 3-4 chapters), & like many romcoms, wraps up a bit too neatly (not only a HEA, but “fortune & glory”). But it‘s still a fun read. I also really liked the authors note on how this story came about.

3✨ really like how books alternate chapters with POVs in a Rom Com. This was a fun one of Indiana Jones meets Lara Croft. I enjoyed the hate to love start, and the guy was more the damsel by the end. It was pretty spicy, and funny. Overall, I enjoyed this adventure and the characters.

#LittensLoveRomance Ch.23-end and Review: An exciting chapter and then a satisfying and romantic end. Overall I enjoyed this book though I did have my issues with both Corrie and Ford. Still, the setting was great, there was adventure, it was not your typical romance, and it had several fun moments. I called most of what happened but I do the same in these types of movies - predictable but entertaining never hurt anyone.

BarkingMadRead I enjoyed it, lots of adventure, a twisty ending, a bit of a scare that ended well, I will probably get the sequel 2mo
PathfinderNicole I ended up liking it more than I thought I would in the middle of it! Good adventure and an occupation you really should see more of in romances. Makes me want to rewatch The Mummy! 2mo

SarahBookInterrupted I felt the same. Not my favourite romance but it was a fun and adventurous read. Enough happened to keep it exciting and engaging until the end. (edited) 2mo
CrowCAH I was about to lose it, if Ford really had died. That definitely would have made the exhibit more bittersweet. I‘m glad at least a couple bad guys got their due- Lance and Crawley. Now for Vantour! This was a fun romance, deeply emotional for the characters, with believable motivation, and lots of archeological conflict. HEA for Corrie and Ford! ❤️ I could read book two: The Temple of Swoon (2025)! 2mo

I enjoyed this book but some of the words that were used for the steamy parts put me off a little. Corrie is an excellent female character, she is smart, assertive and adventurous. I like the whole Indiana Jones vibes but with Corrie as the Indy even though Ford was named after him. Lost treasure, ancient Aztec culture, jungles of Mexico; it was all appealing. There is also a good twist at the end that escalates the whole story which was great.

#LittensLoveRomance Ch.21-22: So everything about the investor and the dig was a lie. My question is, was it Ford‘s responsibility to look further into Vautour and make sure things were on the up and up? Especially since he brought on his own people? Man, I‘d feel terrible if I were him, and his self esteem is already low. And now how is he supposed to pay Corrie back? Ugh, what a mess. Two chapters to fix everything! Can they do it?

BarkingMadRead So much trouble all at once! He messed up big time! 2mo
vonnie862 How did he not know? If Corrie knew right away, then Ford should have been aware. 2mo
See All 7 Comments
LiseWorks So here is the thing. How did they manage to be there all this time without suspicion? Don't the research who owns the land, check woth the government? Ford did not do his job 2mo
PathfinderNicole Ford 100% should have followed up but I suppose I get why he didn‘t? He was so desperate to save his mom that he wasn‘t thinking clearly. Which is understandable! 2mo
SarahBookInterrupted That was a great twist at the end to escalate things. I think it makes sense that the “investor” or smuggler went to him because he was clearly desperate. I‘m sure Ford was blinded by his relief that he had a solution for all his problems. Also the investors behaviour makes so much sense now. (edited) 2mo
CrowCAH Gosh things escalated quickly. The thief, fake permit, the real owner of the land showing up. Seems too much to wrap up in two more chapters. 2mo

#LittensLoveRomance Ch:19&20: Oy. Corrie has a right to be furious with Ford. He did not handle things well and he is not handling things well. I understand he had his motives but I wish he would be strong now and work with the others to get out of this mess. Instead he‘s just an angry sad mess himself. I‘m annoyed with him and hope he snaps out of it soon and makes us proud.

vonnie862 🤣 that meme! 2mo

#LittensLoveRomance Ch.17&18: Well - who called the investor being an a-hole? Clearly someone‘s spying for him and my guess is Lance. What do you do when someone who holds a lot of power threatens you and the people you care about? I would want to hide Chimalli‘s remains out of spite haha. Ford‘s going to have to work with Corrie I think to get through this one.

BarkingMadRead Ugh this has me so stressed! This can blow up in so so many ways! 3mo
LiseWorks So that knife the investor wants must be worth a lot of money for him to threaten Ford like that. I was like, "Don't tell him you found him. Don't say a word." 3mo

#LittensLoveRomance Ch.15&16: what a discovery they‘ve made (a sad one I think). What does this mean about Chimalli‘s fate? And who do we think is the wannabe thief in camp? If they‘ve found the remains they‘re looking for, does this spell the end of the dig and the end of Corrie and Ford‘s romance? Can he convince her to continue after they return to “real” life? Will she want to after he spills his secret? Hmmm a lot of questions coming up.

vonnie862 It was a very sad discovery. I wonder where the dig will go from here. 3mo

#LittensLoveRomance Ch.13&14: Okay, maybe Corrie and Ford are growing on me a bit. I did like that Ford is opening up to her and they cleared up one thing from the past. We know Ford is wild about Corrie, but I think Corrie is falling hard as well. But she will definitely be harder to convince when it comes to forming a relationship. ⬇️

StayCurious At least they‘re actively finding artifacts and things seem to be going well at the dig. I‘m waiting for something to throw a wrench into things though. 3mo
vonnie862 I'm not sure if I should feel bad about Ford. My heart ached when he received the call but then I rolled my eyes on quickly he forgot about it once Corrie said she wanted to bang. But hey, at least it happened. 3mo
See All 7 Comments
PathfinderNicole I‘m glad they cleared up the thing from the past and wasn‘t as bad as it seems. I was pleasantly surprised by Corrie‘s reaction to his explanation. She‘s been acting so immature it was nice to see her react well and accept his explanation. And even forgive him. 3mo
LiseWorks I definitely think he should go see his mom. I have a bad feeling about her and about the person who is giving the money for this whole project. 3mo
Roary47 I also really think Ford should go and be with his mom. I‘ve been in his shoes where life has to keep happening when my mom went through her cancer treatments, but I also live down the street and checked on her more than once a week. If he does leave or thinks about leaving is when something bad it going to happen with the dig. 3mo
CrowCAH Throughout all of this Ford is opening up way more than Corrie. She isn‘t giving tit for tat emotionally on this relationship. Yes, she‘s there for Ford, but she has a lot of holdups too. I‘d like to see Ford go to his Mom. Corrie can take over the dig. 2mo

#LittensLoveRomance Ch.11&12: Corrie sneaking off to go to the new site alone, at night, in the jungle - so impulsive. No wonder she‘s gotten into trouble before. She definitely thinks with her feelings first. Speaking of feelings…and general hormones…it was only a matter of time before we had sexy times inside a tent. But, I do find myself a bit meh about it. Who else is not necessarily falling for this couple?

LiseWorks Lol Mr. I kind of went really? What is she thinking? 3mo
PathfinderNicole I‘m feeling pretty lukewarm about these two also. I love the archaeological stuff but both Corrie and Ford are just not connecting with me. They are both communicating yet NOT communicating somehow which is driving me nuts 3mo

#LittensLoveRomance Ch.9&10: Well, now things are getting exciting- we‘ve got action, some close calls, and the heat is building btw Ford and Corrie. I‘m glad he is opening up to her - I think he is growing as a character with her help. And it seems as though they‘ve found their dig site - which is great for everyone involved. But I‘m sure the stakes will increase now that they‘ve found something. ⬇️

StayCurious I still don‘t trust Lance or the investor. And if I‘m honest, can I ask if Ethan is up to something or am I just waiting for the other shoe to drop? Maybe I watch too many crime tv shows haha. (edited) 3mo

#LittensLoveRomance: If I was Ethan, I would have been more pissed at Corrie and Ford for getting drunk in the middle of the day instead of working. StayCurious Here‘s hoping they find a promising dig site soon. Not only does Ford need a win to boost his ego, but it would be awesome for him to learn to share with Corrie. 3mo

vonnie862 Yes and no. Ford is the lead of the expedition so it made sense why he needed to be the one to tell the crew what to do. However, he needs to work on his communication skills. 3mo

#LittensLoveRomance Ch.5&6: well, that conversation got real. I‘m surprised Corrie pushed Ford to open up when she‘s got so much pent up anger about him inside her. She needs to flat out confront him about some of the slimy things he‘s done (like taking that fellowship, that dig in Peru…the list goes on.) But maybe she‘s able to put that aside to focus on his needs because she‘s a good person. Better than me haha - I hold a grudge.⬇️

StayCurious Are we finding her a realistic character? I‘m not sure. She‘s adventurous, sexually confident, self aware, a good packer (only bringing the essentials haha)…I dunno. She‘s too good to be true😝 3mo

LiseWorks I think she is trying to understand Ford. He has made mistakes. She knows he has taken her digs. Now she is finding out why. Will Ford forgive himself for his behavior? 3mo
vonnie862 Boy, he has issues. He needs to talk to a therapist. 3mo
BarkingMadRead They both need to be honest with each other, I think she‘ll be mad at first but she‘ll respect it. Hopefully. She does seem a little too good to be true 🤣 the lacy bra in the jungle cracked me up, I‘m not gonna lie 🤣 3mo
CrowCAH She definitely packed a lot of extra things! lol I‘m surprised Ethan didn‘t talk to him, seems a better person to have done it. #LittensLoveRomance Ch.3&4: Ford made a pretty costly mistake, picking the wrong place to dig and staying there for 3 months. What do you think the investor‘s going to say when they pack things up and move? Yikes-I wouldn‘t want to be him right now. I agree with the idea of wanting to help his mother above all else, but I don‘t like his idea that his needs “trump” Corrie‘s. That‘s not fair. ⬇️

StayCurious And I bet his mother wouldn‘t like that attitude. What‘s Corrie going to do when she finds out everything? 3mo
vonnie862 It was selfish of him to take the job away from Corrie, but at the same time, I understand why. When one is desperate to help their loved ones, sometime we do stupid things. Obviously, Corrie is going to find out, and drama will ensue. 3mo

vonnie862 Also...who brings a vibrator to a dig? Those tents are not soundproof. 3mo
peanutnine Okay so far I'm satisfied by the portrayal of the dig site. As a former archaeology student, I was a little worried but it's mostly accurate. There's no way an error like that would have happened on a project funded by grants or an institution because they would have had to have a solid argument for digging there specifically. But since this one is funded by a private investor it's a bit more likely 3mo
peanutnine Corrie is going to be absolutely pissed when she finds out he stole her opportunity, especially since it's been hinted that he's done it before. It will probably be the cause of the third act breakup 3mo
julesG @vonnie862 isn't it one of the first things any female scientist would pack for an expedition? Right next to lace underwear? It's definitely essential equipment. 🤣🤣🤣 3mo
LiseWorks Oh dear God the vibratory scene crackers me up. Why would anyone bring that to a dig? 3mo
Roary47 I agree a vibrator to a dig? Ummm no thanks. Ford really took the cake when he took the spot from Corrie. Then he gets her help? At least he admitted he was wrong and they had to move, but yeah investor is not going to be happy. 3mo
CrowCAH I agree. Why bring the vibrator? Ford saw the dig as an answer to his money troubles, without thinking of the consequences to Corrie or the dig team as he wanted to start right away. 3mo

#LittensLoveRomance Ch.1&2: Already this seems like a fun movie - unrealistic but fun. I don‘t care who you are, you wouldn‘t hop on a plane to Mexico and put your college professor career technically on hold for something that wasn‘t a sure thing. The whole mysterious man in her office thing - very Spielberg, but I kinda dig it - haha…no pun intended.⬇️

StayCurious As for the romance: We‘ll see if I can get behind this I-Lust-You-But-I-Loathe-You trope. It can be a lot of fun if it‘s done well. So what is Ford hiding? Why is his mom at risk? I bet even Ethan doesn‘t know the full scope of what is going on. Interesting. And will the villain be the mysterious investor, his lackey, or someone closer to home? 3mo

The idea for this.book was fantastic, and I feel like if they had focused a bit more on what made it unique (the archeological setting) and less on the adults thinking about sex constantly it would have been much better. I'm still curious enough to read the next one to see if the author finds a better balance.

Rival archaeologists have to team up on an Aztec expedition. Dr. Socorro and Dr. Matthews first met at Grad school. They share a rocky past but try to put it to one side for the ‘dig‘. With smugglers and thieves and not knowing who to trust, they decide to keep their discoveries under wraps.
The two MCs had a lot of witty banter and chemistry. The academic rivalry had my interest too. Several secondary characters were great to read about as well.

Jo Segura and I have some things in common. In her note at the end of the book she describes her love for adventure stories/films and archeology. She wanted to write a book that not only reflected her love for Indiana Jones, Lara Croft, the Librarian,... but also her Mexican heritage. I think she managed it well.

A 🌶️ #RomCom about a pair of chalk and cheese archaeologists who've been loathing each other for years, or have they?

What fun! This was an adventurous romp of a book, with JUST enough plot to balance out the smutty bits. The FMC, Corrie, is strong and independent, almost to a fault, and the MMC, Ford, is always trying to do the right thing in the wrong way. They clash as much as they fit, and it‘s pretty entertaining to watch. Definitely has those Romancing the Stone vibes, which was great, and a charming HEA. Enjoyed thoroughly.

Extremely disappointed in this book. It doesn‘t have any real adventure a la Indiana Jones until the last couple of chapters and is just plain boring.
Corrie is brought in as the expert on a dig by Ford, who she blames for her career being slower than she wants. A bunch of whinny dialog and sex happen and then a tiny bit of adventure to secure their big archeological find.
1/5 stars. I‘m really mad that I bought this

As a lover of The Mummy and other adventure rom-coms, I thought this would be my catnip. Alas, that wasn‘t the case. Even though the characters are on a dig in the jungles of Mexico, the story lacks the thrilling adventure I expected. I‘m also not sure I loved the male lead, Ford. Physically, he was fine, but I‘m not sure about the rest of the package.

Such a pretty cover though.

mabell Love the Mummy! We just watched it last night! It‘s in our regular rotation 😄 10mo
Bookzombie @mabell Yes, can watch it any time. 🙂 10mo

It‘s been a while since I bought a book and then that same day, sat there and read it. This book was great! An archeologist gets invited to a secret dig and finds out it‘s her “enemy” from grad school.

Enemies to lovers, second chance romance. Set in the jungles of Mexico. Perfect if you want a female Indiana jones or are interested in a bit of archeology.

Light pick 3 ⭐️. This was a fun adventurous romp, taking inspiration from Indiana Jones, The Mummy, and Romancing the Stone. The setting/premise was a refreshing addition to the rom-com genre, but the romance itself wasn‘t anything special. It was hard to take the professional/archeology plot line too seriously when the love interests were constantly thinking about how hot each other was (from the first moment they reunite at the dig).
