Harriet the Spy
Harriet the Spy | Louise Fitzhugh
Harriet M. Welsch is a spy. In her notebook, she writes down everything she knows about everyone, even her classmates and her best friends. Then Harriet loses track of her notebook, and it ends up in the wrong hands. Before she can stop them, her friends have read the always truthful, sometimes awful things she’s written about each of them. Will Harriet find a way to put her life and her friendships back together?

Got this in the mail today 💗💗💗 one of my all time favorite books as a kid. I use to get in so much trouble for keeping a notepad with everything I seen and what people around the house said 😂 I had my own rock collection too. Each rock had their own names and I‘d play with them often. I wanted a utility belt but my parents were assholes and refused to get me one lol I can‘t believe it‘s taken so many years to order this book💗

1. I think I was always writing in notebooks so I related to Harriet. Something like this story actually happened to me in fifth grade.
2. If we‘re talking passion: pie. Volume consumed: cake
3. I write, various fiber arts, wandering, agonizing, being alone, enjoying nature, traveling, gardening...
4. Colorado‘s pretty great but also cold, rocky coastal places with rain
Thanks for the tag, @Trashcanman #friyayintro

arubabookwoman I‘m into fiber arts too #LMPBC partner-would love to hear more about what you do! 9mo
jmofo @arubabookwoman I started sewing, crocheting, weaving, and some needlework when I was a kid, learned how to knit and felt in my twenties. I want to get into drop spinning but I already have too much yarn. I like to make clothing and toyish things. Except for the sewing, I don‘t use patterns, so I think this Winter I‘m going to try to make a sweater from a pattern. I probably won‘t follow it. I‘m going to try. What do you like to make? 9mo

The SSR Podcast launched today with two episodes!! I just finished listening to the first one, and I did NOT remember how mean Harriet really was in Harriet the Spy. Check it out on iTunes if you want to relive (or ruin) your memories of this classic.

The SSR Podcast is a brand new podcast that focuses on a childhood or teen favorite read from a now adult perspective. #ssrpodcast

#AdelesMayMashUp Day 10: Still the signature book for #RumourHasIt. Did you know that this is one of the most banned books because schools claimed it to be a “bad example for children” and for “teaching children to lie, spy, talk back, and curse.” For more banned books, Fats, one of the GB ladies, has done a round-up here: https://gatheringbooks.org/2013/09/28/raising-awareness-books-that-have-been-ban...

I‘ve been re-reading some childhood favorites. I got a copy from the library rather than crack open my old tattered and torn copy. Harriet was a little meaner in her notebook entries than I remembered, but I still love her. In 5th grade, my neighbor Carol and I kept notebooks just like Harriet. I don‘t think I would have wanted anyone to read what we wrote either! I remember writing something about Nancy P.‘s smelly socks😬🤭🤫

Then (~40 years ago 😱): Harriet was cool b/c she wrote a lot & was a spy. The meanness amongst the kids were just part of life; not right but something we were resigned to pre-zero tolerance policies.

Now: Notice that Harriet lives in a tony part of Manhattan. Her parents are gossipy socialites (maybe that‘s where Harriet got her mean streak) & she‘s attached to her nurse (nanny) Ole Golly & the family cook, whose name we never learn. 👇More

ValerieAndBooks Growing up in the California suburbs, I had no clue about what NYC was like until we moved out east and I‘ve been there a few times. ValerieAndBooks @saresmoore @rubyslippersreads @batsy it is still a good book but I feel that it would be very different if written today. One other thing I had forgotten was how often Ole Golly quoted poetry or from the classics! 2y
rubyslippersreads @ValerieAndBooks @batsy It's interesting to note that, while I loved this as a kid, my mother hated it. She didn't keep me from reading it, but I'm sure she could see a lot of things in it that I missed. 2y
