I think this is the first time I‘ve “panned” a book…⭐️⭐️ - This did not age well for me. Picked up on a nostalgic whim from the library, I‘m thankful my kiddo wasn‘t interested in reading this when I first recommended it.

I re-read this so many times as a kid, and re-reading as an adult was a bit strange. I loved Harriet then and really wanted to be her - I started keeping a notebook, I wished I lived in a city so I could spy on my neighbours. Rereading it as an adult, I still like how feisty she is, even how horrible she is at times, but I can see now that she's also quite dysfunctional, and maybe we're supposed to feel sorry for her, not want to be her.

Ruthiella I was surprised when I reread it as a kid how mean the kids are-including Harriet! I did get any of that as a child. 2y

I enjoyed this one but this time I read it with adult eyes, there were concerns about Harriet‘s behavior. Loved her young critical thinking process. My heart was broken during the goodbye to her significant person. However, it should be discussed with middle grade children of what is appropriate or not when you write about others in school journal (social media). Also it should be discussed differences of being a “spy” vs public privacy. 3.75⭐️

1. I seem to have developed a fetish for natural fibers, making me prone to prefer historical fiction and nonfiction history. If I read anything from the 18th century I can't help but wonder where Jamie and Claire are meanwhile...

2. No preference. But I tend to remember them if they mention sandwiches.

I‘m more of a goody-two-shoes than Harriet but I was always curious like she is.
1: swimming and diving — I wasn‘t good enough to be on the teams. When I was in grad school though, I was diving for fun, and one of the members of the diving team started practicing with me because he said that I had “the soul of a diver.” 😊

1. I‘m bad at team sports but I like running. I did one season x-country in high school then took up marathoning in my late-30s. Ran 6 marathons, then one day I was done.🤷🏻‍♀️ Have been running more again since lockdown—grateful to be reminded how much it helps my mental health.

These are three books that take place in New York that I read and loved as a child. I was always amazed at how these kids were allowed to walk and take buses and cabs around a big city like NYC without adults. I walked to school with other kids but that was it. I would have been terrified to take a bus on my own. 😀

When I talk about books that I read in my childhood most of the time I don't remember the story. I don't remember all of the characters. I don't remember how long it took me to finish reading the book.
But what I do remember is probably the most precious gift of discovering literature as a child -> the story lifted me beyond the gravitational pull of this earthly planet and delivered me to some place else.👇🏽

Tonton ❤️ Harriet❣️ 3y
Nute I couldn't wait to go. I wanted to read under the bed covers in the middle of the night, on the playground at recess, sitting under oak trees in the backyard, laying in the grassy fields behind our house under cloudy skies, in the bath tub...everywhere and all the time!
One good reading experience made me hungry for the next. Sometimes a book was so good, I just wanted to read it over and over again.👇🏽
(edited) 3y
Nute
I don't remember anything about the book, Harriet the Spy, except that I absolutely loved it. I carried it to all my secret places for months on end, and read it so many times from beginning to end until it began to fall apart.

I have a lot of books like that from my childhood, books that were loved so much that they eventually required the taping and gluing of covers and pages to remain intact.👇🏽
3y

Nute I remember pleading with my Mom for the purchase of a composition notebook📓 so that I could write things down like Harriet (far more cooler known as journaling now...well, she was a spy🥴). PLEASE MOM!

Although the storylines cannot be recalled accurately, none of that matters to me. These books rate high with me, because I remember how I felt when I read them: that reading was more than just something to do, it was a discovery. It was a gift!

(edited) 3y
megnews @Nute you‘ve really captured what it is to become and love being a reader from a young age. I can‘t remember the stories either nor even much of the ones I loved from a year ago. But I remember the feelings they invoked and the sense of adventure. Beautiful post. 3y

My mom wouldn‘t buy me a notebook, though ( I think she was afraid I‘d get into the same kind of trouble Harriet did. 😂) I definitely remember that feeling of wanting to read every minute; I used to get in trouble for reading during recess. 😊 3y
Nute @megnews @Tamra Thank you! Some of my best memories are of my childhood reading adventures and how much I loved a particular story or wanted to be a particular character. I‘ve read many good stories as an adult, but reading has never felt as all encompassing as it did in childhood. (edited) 3y

4. Colorado‘s pretty great but also cold, rocky coastal places with rain

Coffeedaily One of my favorites when I was a kid. We had a neighborhood spy club with composition notebooks full of mundane minutia. So fun! 4y

The SSR Podcast launched today with two episodes!! I just finished listening to the first one, and I did NOT remember how mean Harriet really was in Harriet the Spy. Check it out on iTunes if you want to relive (or ruin) your memories of this classic.

The SSR Podcast is a brand new podcast that focuses on a childhood or teen favorite read from a now adult perspective. #ssrpodcast

MarriedtoMrT Cool! Thanks for the heads up. 5y
Kaylamburson Of course! I hope you like it! I‘m almost done with The Princess Diaries one, too, and I‘m connecting a ton with it. @MarriedtoMrT 5y
sebrittainclark Awesome! I've got a bookish podcast as well, and I love seeing new ones! 5y

Kaylamburson Oh fun!! Tell me about your bookish podcast! @sebrittain I was never into podcasts but I‘m loving this new one, so I think I should try more of them! 5y
sebrittainclark @Kaylamburson we do literary analysis of books in genres that don't usually get that treatment. We're currently working our way through the Harry Potter series, but we have plans to do fantasy, sci-fi, YA, and romance novels. Our episode on Prisoner of Azkaban comes out on Friday. 5y
Kimberlone Love the name! I will try to check it out. Podcasts are how I survive at work! 5y
Kaylamburson Oh that sounds so fun! I‘ll definitely have to check it out. Is it on iTunes? What‘s it called? @sebrittain 5y
Kaylamburson They definitely picked a fun and witty name! I‘m excited to hear what you think! @Kimberlone 5y
sebrittainclark @Kaylamburson Unassigned Reading. We're on iTunes, Google, Stitcher, and Spotify. 5y
Kaylamburson Already listened to the first two and it‘s a lot of fun! I now want to reread HP!! @sebrittain 5y

I came across a throwback copy of Harriet the Spy in the funkiest little tea shop yesterday. I felt like I was inside a lazy Sunday morning daydream of Boy George‘s.

#AdelesMayMashUp Day 10: Still the signature book for #RumourHasIt. Did you know that this is one of the most banned books because schools claimed it to be a “bad example for children” and for “teaching children to lie, spy, talk back, and curse.” For more banned books, Fats, one of the GB ladies, has done a round-up here: https://gatheringbooks.org/2013/09/28/raising-awareness-books-that-have-been-ban...

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Wow!!! I didn‘t know that!!! I love your posts!! 😘😘 5y
Mdargusch I did not know this! I loved this book growing up! Maybe that‘s why I‘m such a liar, curser, and spy now! 😂😂😂 (edited) 5y
vkois88 Say what?!? I didn't know that either!! I absolutely ADORED this book when I was little. Probably one of my most read books. In fact, I think I even had two copies 😊 5y
AmyG This is one of my most favorite childhood books. Banned? 😳 5y

Found these at a church in Hamilton today for the bargain price of $1 each! The church was feeding lots of elderly ladies eating all alone at separate tables. I couldn‘t understand why they didn‘t make friends and eat together. The food looked delicious.
I collect both Bryce and Jodi. Harriet is for my step daughter, Linnéa who is obsessed with spies at the moment.

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Love Jodi!!! 5y
LapReader What about these ones @Miss__astrid 5y
Miss__astrid I don‘t know! I thought I had read a lot of her books but apparently there are quite a few I haven‘t even heard of! 5y
