The Oh She Glows Cookbook
The Oh She Glows Cookbook: Over 100 Vegan Recipes to Glow from the Inside Out | Angela Liddon
16 posts | 15 read | 13 to read
After a decade of struggling with an eating disorder and subsisting on diet, low-calorie processed foods, Angela Liddon vowed to get healthy once and for all. Done with feeling sick and tired, she threw out her fat-free butter spray and low-calorie frozen dinners. Instead, Angela embraced whole foods that made her glow from the inside out. But first, she had to learn to cook-and eat-right. Five years ago, Angela started a blog, ohsheglows.com, to spread the word about her journey to health and the powerful transformation that food can make in our lives. Almost overnight, her energy and authenticity attracted readers eager to create their own positive life changes. Today, Oh She Glows attracts millions of visitors every month, making it one of the most popular vegan recipe blogs on the Internet.

My #mtcookbook goal is one new recipe a month to get back into the habit of cooking from scratch (ish) and make it fun again. This cookbook was on my Litsy TBR so I borrowed it from the library. I was excited to find this soup recipe because I‘ve actually been searching for red lentil options besides Dahl and not finding them. It came out pretty well, but I‘m not sure what tweaks I‘d want to make before adding it to my regular repertoire.👇🏼

IndoorDame Overall this is a style of cooking I already do sans recipes and I don‘t know that those dishes would be improved enough if I followed Liddon‘s instructions to justify the cost or space of a new cookbook. (edited) 3mo
TheBookHippie It‘s why I always take cookbooks out of the library first! 3mo
See All 9 Comments
Cuilin @TheBookHippie I went to the library for the first time in a while to check out some cookbooks too. I don‘t know why I‘ve never done this before. 3mo
TheBookHippie @Cuilin it‘s amazing, I do it at least twice a month! 3mo
Tamra Oh, I could use that soup today! 🤧 3mo
Tamra @IndoorDame me too! 3mo
IndoorDame @Tamra oh no, feel better! (You can probably mock up any vegetable soup recipe you like with some added turmeric/paprika/cayenne for a similar effect) 3mo
Tamra @IndoorDame that‘s the plan! Will try to post a pic later. 3mo

I have been taking #myshot at eating vegan since the start of the year. I've been making things from this cookbook for the past couple of weeks. (Nothing with "cashew cream" though, cuz that sounds way too involved for where I am in life right now ?.) So far, I would recommend. The recipes have been pretty easy, no wildly obscure or expensive ingredients, and everything has tasted good!

#musicalnewyear
@Cinfhen @vivastory

saresmoore Soak the cashews, drain the cashews, blend the cashews, then clean the damn blender?! Geez, Louise. 5y
readordierachel @saresmoore Right?? Who has time for that! Although it does taste good 😂 5y
saresmoore It really does. I break down and do it about three times per year. Easier now that I can get a shower almost every day! 🙃 5y

mcipher I love her recipes - the raw rainbow pad Thai salad is ah-may-zing. 5y
readordierachel @mcipher Yum. I will have to try that! 5y
Cinfhen My daughter went plant based in November and she insists cashew milk is easy to prepare ~ @saresmoore @readordierachel but then again she isn‘t a mom with little ones😂😂 I‘m shocked how my daughter has embraced her inner chef 👩‍🍳 nothing fazes her in terms of ingredients or prep time where I nix almost EVERY recipe for those reasons. 5y
vivastory I've been contemplating going vegetarian for a couple of years now. 5y
Weaponxgirl I‘ve had my eye on this book for ages 5y
readordierachel @Cinfhen Good for her! Maybe I'll get to that point someday 😆 #goals 5y
readordierachel @vivastory It was a pretty gradual process for me, with the influence of vegetarian/vegan friends and roommates. In the beginning I was just having meatless days and not really stressing about it. 5y
readordierachel @Weaponxgirl It's a good one! Worth picking up 5y
vivastory I think that will be the best approach, rather than immediate all or nothing. I love pasta & cheese, so lot of days I don't eat meat 5y
readordierachel @vivastory I read somewhere that if everyone skipped meat/dairy just one day a week it would make a huge impact. People have different lives, tastes, and access to food, so I feel like if we all just do a little bit, we're good! I actually have time to cook since I started telecommuting, so I thought I'd experiment :) 5y
Lauram The African Peanut Stew is SO GOOD. I‘ve made it a few times and wish I had the ingredients to make this today. 5y
readordierachel @Lauram Oooh, I haven't tried that yet! That'll be next on my list. 5y
AlaSkaat I'm wanting to go vegan or vegetarian. I don't even like meat! But I am not sure how I can eat a balanced diet without it and keep my weight in check. I should start reading some books to check out recipes! Or just learn about nutrition. Lol 5y
readordierachel @OleAnder Haha. Yeah, finding that balance is important. Im still figuring it out. So far, it feels like more meal planning, but the end result is good! Good luck! 5y
Chrissyreadit Did you ever try making the cashew cream? It‘s not to difficult. The soup is so good. 5y
readordierachel @Chrissyreadit I still haven't, but I want to. Maybe I will do it this week :) Do you mean the African peanut stew? Do you have any other cookbooks you like in this vein? 5y
Chrissyreadit @readordierachel I will tag a few books for you in a post tonight. I made it for the 10 spice soup- it‘s a favorite in my house. 5y
readordierachel @Chrissyreadit Awesome! Thanks! 5y
readordierachel @Lauram I made the African Peanut stew for the first time last night. It was AMAZING. I just ate some for breakfast too, lol 5y
Lauram I‘m so glad you liked it! Have you found any other good recipes in that book? I think I‘ve only made 3 so far. 5y
readordierachel @Lauram So good. I really liked the Indian Lentil-Cauliflower soup. That's the only thing I've repeated. And I liked the creamy avocado pasta (I think that's from this cookbook?). I had to return it to the library, but I'll probably check it out again and try more in the future. They're a tad time-consuming. 5y
Lauram They‘re very time consuming. The snack bars are yummy (and relatively easy) and the Protein Power Goddess Bowl is one of the few recipes I‘ve made more than once. 5y
readordierachel @Lauram I will try those! 5y

@Elle_Skeldon thanks for sending oh she glows- it is actually one of my favorites also! I will do the same and share it if I have another vegan partner! I am a cookbook junkie, who never has time to cook! And I LOVE vegan cookbooks. What are some of your favorite recipes (in general?) We love pomegranate tofu. Also Cauliflower with lemon and capers. From this book it‘s 10-spice vegetable soup with cashew cream.

Bronte_Chintz What‘s your favourite vegan cookbook would you say. I‘ve been veggie for years but just gone vegan and would love a recommendation. 6y
ElleSkel I always pick this book up when I see it cheap so I can share it with other vegans because it is my favorite! That soup is to die for!!! I am certainly a beginner when it comes to vegan cooking but I have to say this book and the Thug kitchen are where the bulk of my recipes are from. The cornmeal waffles in that one are amazing!!! 6y
Chrissyreadit @Elle_Skeldon I have Thug Kitchen- I will try those waffles out. I have a ridiculous problem with Books. 6y

Chrissyreadit I‘ve been vegan for 9 years and was vegetarian for 20 years before that but I wish I was better in the kitchen. 6y
Chrissyreadit @Bronte_Chintz I just realized your in #jb- I can send you oh she glows if you would like it! 6y
Bronte_Chintz @Chrissyreadit oh you don‘t have to do that! Bless you! I didn‘t really think of looking on Litsy for vegan recommendations as well! It‘s nice to know there‘s a little vegan community on here as well. 6y
Chrissyreadit @Bronte_Chintz it‘s up to you- I‘m happy to pay it forward. I have a copy and @Elle_Skeldon just sent me a second copy- that I will gladly pass to a vegan on Litsy looking for an excellent vegan cookbook. 6y
Bronte_Chintz @Chrissyreadit If you‘re sure I‘d love it! Sound like a fantastic book! 💖💖💖 Thank you! 6y
Chrissyreadit @Bronte_Chintz your welcome. Will send next week! 6y

Hello all the lovely Littens, I‘m here to try to pick your brains for some suggestions.
I‘ve recently made the decision to try to cut about 80-90% of red meat from my diet, which means a lot more vegetarian meals. 👍
What are your favorite vegetarian/vegan cookbooks? I have the one tagged, but am trying to build up my collection. The easier the recipe, the better, but I don‘t mind spending a lot of time preparing a delicious meal. Thanks all! ❤️

[DELETED] 3803335244 I‘ve been gluten free & only eat about 10 percent fish & chicken. No red meat for years & I‘ll be honest. The best place to find great recipes is, Pinterest. I‘ve bought g.f cookbooks, vegetarian cookbooks. But most end up taking too much time to make for a family, really expensive with things I don‘t have. So when starting out use Pinterest. Follow lots of recipe pinners. That‘s my advice. Later once you get the hang of it buy cookbooks. 6y
[DELETED] 3803335244 Or library cookbooks to see what you want. 6y
JoRead That pic is hilarious 😂😂 6y

JPeterson @ForeverNerdy Thanks! That was my problem with the one I have...everything looks great, I just don‘t have the time/money to spend on one recipe. I have started a Pinterest board for them, but definitely need to spend more time adding to it. 👍 6y
JPeterson @JoRead Haha, I found it online. And it‘s been roughly some friends reaction when I told them about this change lol 😂 6y
cobwebmoth I've been using this cookbook for years. But most of my favorite recipes, whether vegetarian or otherwise, have been found via Google searches. 6y
JoRead @JPeterson I believe you. My brother tried but he's single, works 12-15 hrs daily and it's not that easy to find ready-made meals anywhere or online or restaurants for vegans where he lives so he kind of just switched to vegetarian. Good luck to you! 6y
JPeterson @cobwebmoth Thanks! That looks like exactly what I was looking for! 😄 6y
rubyslippersreads ❤️ this cartoon! I don't have any cookbook suggestions, but that mouse on a skewer just spoiled my appetite for meat. 🤢 6y
CoffeeCatsBooks Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone has great recipes but can be more time consuming. My favorite is probably is first Mosewood Cookbook. 6y
CoffeeCatsBooks Also, if you are trying to save time soups are great. Make a batch over the weekend then you can eat it for dinner the rest of the week. 6y
dariazeoli If you have access to Hoopla, they have a ton of plant-based cookbooks available! 6y
KVanRead Lol! I love the cartoon. @DebinHawaii turned me on to some good ones and may have others to suggest. 6y
KVanRead @dariazeoli That‘s good to know about Hoopla! Thanks. 6y
Kristy_K I recently became vegan and this cookbook has been a lifesaver! 6y
brilliantglow The other oh she glows cookbook is fantastic too. I also love Prashad, which is fully if delicious vegetarian Indian dishes 6y
JPeterson @rubyslippersreads I‘m definitely holding onto the cartoon to send to people 😂 6y
Louise Also, I agree with those that have mentioned the Moosewood Cookbooks. 6y
DebinHawaii The ones @KVanRead mentioned or any by Robin Robertson are great for quick-fix easy recipes. Like these 6y
JPeterson @CoffeeCatsBooks Thanks! I love soup, especially now that it‘s winter. That‘s a great suggestion! 😊 6y
DebinHawaii Also any by Isa Chandra Moskowitz are great vegan cookbooks 6y
JPeterson @dariazeoli Thanks! I would have never thought to check out to see what Hoopla has! 😊 6y
Jaimelire Pinterest ....tons and tons of veggie options! 6y
DebinHawaii I echo checking books out of the library first if you have access to one with a good selection and as mentioned online or Pinterest are great. Whole Foods website and Veg News and Vegetarian Times magazines have good websites that you can sign up to get emails from. 6y
JPeterson @KVanRead @DebinHawaii @Kristy_K @Louise @Bookcation74 Thanks everyone! All these look great! I‘ll need to get my hand on some of these, especially one from Moodewoods! 😊 6y
JPeterson @brilliantglow Mmm! The few recipes I have are all Indian dishes, so this would be perfect! Thanks for the suggestion! 6y
brilliantglow You're welcome! I'm a huge fan of Indian food😃 6y
JPeterson @DebinHawaii Thanks! That‘s great to know about those other websites that have ideas. 😊 6y
DebinHawaii @JPeterson You are welcome! I eat fish and eggs and some cheese dairy but no meat/poultry for several years now & I cook a lot of vegan because dairy is no friend to my asthma 😬so lots of experience with cookbooks & finding & creating recipes. 6y
Clare-Dragonfly I love Isa Chandra Moskowitz as well. Google chickpea cutlets. The original recipe is in Veganomicon but she has a doubled recipe on her blog. I absolutely love it. Also, good for you and I wish you well on your dietary journey! 🙌🏻 6y

I confess. I hate to cook. 😩 It frustrates me. I am envious of those of you who enjoy it. If I ever won the lottery a personal chef would be first on my list! However, I do like to bake so I say #bonappetit to cookies and dessert concoctions, breakfast breads & muffins. #augustgrrrl @Cinfhen

This cookbook is a great resource for adding veggies to your diet and trying a vegan lifestyle. My only complaint is that it isn't very gluten-free or soy-free friendly. I personally prefer her second cookbook.

#booknbreakfast. I've had this cookbook for a few years - trust me, the food is not only healthy, but tasty and pretty easy to make. Today's recipe is Maple-Cinnamon Baked Oatmeal with Apples and Pears. Highly recommended if you want to try something new and healthy in 2017.

DebinHawaii That looks delicious! I have that cookbook but haven't tried this recipe yet. 👍😀 7y
LittleWonder @DebinHawaii It was really good! I love that it can be used for breakfast or as a dessert too! Do make it and enjoy! Happy New Year! 7y

Ok, why didn't anyone tell me that the Kindle app for iPhones has improved immensely in the past, what, 5 years since the last time I downloaded it?! I got a good deal on the Kindle version of this cookbook (which I've been wanting for ages) & gave the phone app a try, as a friend told me it was really quite good now. It is so easy to use with my cookbooks! And reading fiction is so much better/easier than previously! Total game changer! 😍🙌
