The Atlas Six
The Atlas Six | Olivie Blake
The Alexandrian Society, caretakers of lost knowledge from the greatest civilizations of antiquity, are the foremost secret society of magical academicians in the world. Those who earn a place among the Alexandrians will secure a life of wealth, power, and prestige beyond their wildest dreams, and each decade, only the six most uniquely talented magicians are selected to be considered for initiation. Enter the latest round of six: Libby Rhodes and Nico de Varona, unwilling halves of an unfathomable whole, who exert uncanny control over every element of physicality. Reina Mori, a naturalist, who can intuit the language of life itself. Parisa Kamali, a telepath who can traverse the depths of the subconscious, navigating worlds inside the human mind. Callum Nova, an empath easily mistaken for a manipulative illusionist, who can influence the intimate workings of a person's inner self. Finally, there is Tristan Caine, who can see through illusions to a new structure of reality-an ability so rare that neither he nor his peers can fully grasp its implications. When the candidates are recruited by the mysterious Atlas Blakely, they are told they will have one year to qualify for initiation, during which time they will be permitted preliminary access to the Society's archives and judged based on their contributions to various subjects of impossibility: time and space, luck and thought, life and death. Five, they are told, will be initiated. One will be eliminated. The six potential initiates will fight to survive the next year of their lives, and if they can prove themselves to be the best among their rivals, most of them will. Most of them.

I was really looking forward to reading this, but struggled to get very far. The writing felt shallow and childish, and I just gave up.

I might come back to this later, but for now it‘s slowing my momentum. When reading doesn‘t sound good, it‘s time for me to pick something else. I‘m glad DNFs count for #bookspinbingo (not that I‘m likely to achieve it this month).

I cannot put my finger on why I didn‘t enjoy this book. There were multiple moments while reading when I wanted to dnf the book. But then something would grab my attention and I would keep reading. It‘s strange, because normally I can pinpoint at least one reason why I dislike a book, but with this one I can‘t quite articulate it… I just didn‘t vibe with it…

jimfields3 I sometimes have this same problem , so thanks for giving voice to it. I‘m several chapters into this now. I was hoping to be mesmerized already but not yet. 1w
reclusivepigeon @jimfields3 It kind of came off as overly pretentious and vague. Maybe my expectations were too high because this book had been hyped up way too much 🤷‍♀️ 1w

Definitely not my usual thing but that‘s the joy of challenges! There‘s a secret magical library with a strange manipulative competition between the ‘Six‘. Too much world-building, magicy stuff for me, but I did enjoy following the chess-like moves and POVs of each of the six chosen to protect and learn at the library. I love a #DarkAcademia vibe, and the complexity of characters kept me engaged. No.2 of the #duology due in Oct. #pop22 #booked2022

Cinfhen Well done 👍🏻 2w
squirrelbrain Great review! I was going to read this one for this prompt, (I think @trishb recommended it - or at least C did! 🤣) but went with this instead… 2w
TrishB @squirrelbrain definitely C - it‘s one of her fave books. I have the special edition of the second one on order! 2w

Megabooks I‘ve been wondering what to do with the duology. Great review! 2w
KarenUK @Megabooks it‘s one the hardest challenges I think! Particularly when I‘m not a fantasy reader usually! So many duologies are in that genre. This was a #doubledip for two challenges, so I decided to give it a go! The audio is full cast and really well done. 2w
Cortg Way to keep an open mind! Congrats on finishing a non-favorite genre 🥳 2w

This book was fudging phenomenal!!!!!!!! It was so good that the fact that the second book won‘t be out for another six months isn‘t even making me mad! I need this time to process and possibly only reread this book forever.

She understood, in a way the others did not, the existence of polarities, the mysticism of opposition: that acknowledging the presence of life meant accepting the presence of death. NotCool

I don‘t think I care for this. The magic seems to correlate with having lots of money, which is dull. Almost no one has any intellectual curiosity. 2 different adults noticed another adult‘s pimple, which is oddly Jr high. What adult has ever cared that another has a pimple? We‘ve all had them? Who is this for? Magicians, Ninth House, and Deadly Education were all more likable. Maybe it gets better, IDK.

NotCool So I read a little further. The problem I have with these characters, is the same I had pre-revel in The Good Place. Someone puts you in a position where you have to murder someone and rather then going “nah, I‘ll burn this place to the ground first” or getting all the rest of the potential victims together and saying “Atlas wants us murdering someone, I chose Atlas” you just go along with it? 2mo

I‘m so disappointed, y‘all - I wanted to enjoy this dark academia fantasy a lot more than I did. It just felt very unbalanced; a lot of time was spent in the characters‘ heads, some of the POVs were more developed (and so more interesting) than others, and very little time was spent on exposition so that I never had a grasp on the world it was set in or the magic system that existed within it. A generous so-so.

This was the magical dark academia novel I have been waiting for! Features similar elements to books like The Magicians, A Deadly Education, and The Starless Sea, but this book is more than the sum of its parts. The narration by a full cast really brought the characters to life, and the plot is pieced together perfectly so that some late book reveals have the intended impact. Apparently book 2 comes out later this year - can‘t wait! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My brain is still working it‘s way through all the little details that seemed trivial until the eye opening ending. This was dark academia at its best. Six elite medians (magic users) are chosen to be part of an elite society that protects a magical library full of dangerous knowledge. Be ready to question reality and the concept of time itself. I‘ll admit my nerd self was all in for the physics discussions even though it‘s not my favorite topic.
