A friend said that the book was a good read.

1ReVeluvY The story is told in the perspective of Caden Bosch. He is the unreliable narrator who develops schizophrenia and experiences the symptoms of the mental illness as the story progresses. The story is structured in a way where Caden explains his thoughts which represents situations and characters that appear in real life. The way he interprets reality would be taken over by his thoughts but eventually clears as he conquers the mission of diving the 3w
1ReVeluvY deepest point on earth. As the mission comes to an end, his illness does as well.

He realizes that what is down the trench was not worth it and that the parrot, who represents Dr. Poirot who had a role in helping him get better, was right. The puzzle piece of the sky guided him up the trench, which may be a metaphor for the state of his illness at that moment. ~That moment could be due to the effect of cheeking his medicine for the first time be
3w
1ReVeluvY cause the people he had liked to be with at the hospital leave him. Carlyle had to leave because he took the blame of lacking the responsibility for the group he took care of since it led to Hal‘s attempted suicide (nobody really knows his condition since Caden never got that news) and was free from all the burden. When actually, Hal, who represents the navigator in Caden‘s thoughts, was going through something that most likely related to his 3w
1ReVeluvY relationship with his mom. ~ The puzzle needed to be complete just like how Caden had to be complete again in one place so that he can identify reality and the captain‘s convincing (the captain who may symbolize that the illness that can approach at any time but Caden knows that he will not join the captain's voyages for a long while). Caden is reunited with his family as a member of the rational world once again, free from burden and confusion. 3w

I chose this book because I had done a bit of research on it, and I found that the symbolism of this book is strong. Caden Bosch is living two worlds, one of his imagination, one in real life. This imaginary world, one where he is an artist for a pirate, who is wanting to go deep into the Mariana's Trench. Once he agrees on this expedition, Caden develops a mental illness in the real world as he believes someone is out

Summary: Caden Bosch has two worlds the real one and the one in his mind. Over the past months he loses his grip on reality and close ones start to notice his odd behaviour. He goes through a lot of paranoia and treatment. As he's clear he gets to go home, but though it could come back he knows to be the bigger person.

Mental illness--such an important topic, and this book captures what it is like to be tormented by inner demons that require hospitalization, therapy and medication to be vanquished. Shusterman compares mental illness to a tempestuous ocean with beasts that require confrontation. It took me three times of starting this book to figure out where he was going, but once I got it, it was worth the ride. ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

Shusterman has a writing style I respect. This story involves a #fantasysetting that is part of a conjured place in the psyche of the MC. It becomes his “default setting” (yes, pun). Poignant

The writing style of this book took a little getting used to, but it‘s worth it. The story centers on a teenager suffering from mental illness and is told from his perspective, which includes both real events and events that are constructs of his illness.

Some heavy topics are covered here but the story is also told with humor and empathy.

Hope you guys enjoy it too!

Centique @Cinfhen i think it‘s just that for a large part of the book you‘re inside the world of his psychosis. I loved this! Thank you so much for putting this on my radar @Robothugs

A story of mental illness, this book puts you inside 15yo Caden Bosch‘s head. You experience his psychosis and his times of lucidity. You jump in and out of reality, seeing patterns and reflections between what is real and how that is interpreted in his psychotic state. It‘s such a good book for creating empathy I think - and a wonderful chaotic ride to go on with Caden.

Robothugs Oh my gosh I‘m SOOOOOO happy you loved this. 💗💗 It will always remain among my favorites. The backstory makes the impact that much stronger. 1y

Despite the glowing reviews, If I didn‘t have to read this book for work, I don‘t think I would have finished it. I really admire the writing talent of Mr. Schusterman...yes, this book is truly excellent work. I gave it a “so-so” review simply because it was so hard to follow. Jumping between Caden‘s reality and the world of his mental illness was confusing, and I just don‘t think a book should be so much work to read!

Shusterman used his experience with his own sons's schizophrenia for this. Gorgeous & heartbreaking (but ultimately hopeful) this tells the story of Caden as he travels the open seas with the Captain. It was interesting how the narrative of his real life (and the rather terrifying ways his illness manifested) and his journey with the Captain are at first separate and then mesh as the medication starts working.

Heartbreaking. Thought provoking. Definitely a book that will stay with me for a very long time.
