Sometimes Stevens wondered if his views weren‘t quaint, given the temper of the modern world. The other students uttered the most horrible things about the colored population of Boston, about their smell, their intellectual deficiencies, their primitive drives. Yet when his classmates put their blades to a colored cadaver, they did more for the cause of colored advancement than the most high-minded abolitionist. In death [...]

Finally I read this book! Thankfully the #authoramonth2020 challenge inspired me to read the story of an escaped slave, Cora, and her travel on the Underground Railroad. I was a little disappointed the fantasy part was not developed more. I also was put off by the fact that Cora kept stopping in unsafe places knowing that a slave catcher was after her. Still, Cora‘s fierce will to survive, kept me turning the pages and rooting for her.

Djspens The Nickel Boys is also an excellent book of his. 14h

A compelling read. The concept of the Underground Railroad being an actual railroad is unique and interesting. So well executed, and the precise language does not shy away from viciousness and cruelty that scarred America. As a main character Cora never come quite close enough for me to connect with, though what she and the others went through were harrowing. This highly praised novel is a very necessary read.

I don‘t know why I waited so long to read this. I enjoyed the intersecting storylines of Caesar and Mabel, and how they related to and influenced Cora, the MC, but wish there had been more to them. I also thought the story ended a little abruptly. I loved the writing though and will definitely read more by this author.

The book is about Cora's journey as she tries to escape from the plantation by the means of a quite literal underground railroad. The subject matter does make this book quite depressing as it explores one of the worst crimes committed in human history. Caesar is supposed to be a main character but we don't get to know about his whereabouts till the very end. I think the book is historical fiction...

sudi but there are certain fantasy elements to it like the freedom trail and the railroad being underground. i liked the story and
the research he did for the book is commendable. overall i liked it, but not a book where you can learn more about the metaphoric underground railroad.

I really enjoyed Whitehead‘s alternate reality imagining of slavery and the Underground Railroad. My book club read this for Black History Month at my urging. The most interesting thing I found from our discussion (keeping in mind I‘m the only minority in my book club) was how many of them were thrown by the alternate history aspect and actually thought the Underground Railroad had been a real railroad as described. #AuthorAMonth

So I know I‘m supposed to be finishing my #BookSpin for February right now but I got slightly sidetracked about halfway through. As most of you noticed I started the babysitters coven this month. While I do like this book so far I have something else to rave about. I recently discovered Watt pad. I know I‘m late to the party but now that I‘m here I need to tell y‘all about an incredible writer I‘ve discovered! (Finish post on next comment)

BeautifullyBookish Willow Hadley has brought to life an incredible world and family that I want to be apart of more than almost any other fictional series has for me in some time. I love seeing scenes from all different perspectives and getting to know characters inner thoughts and she introduces new characters so well. I just wanted to give a shout out to my favorite unpublished author! And I promise I will finish babysitters coven now! 5d

Audiobooks aren't my preferred medium but they do fill up the time during a long commute. I've never finished a book in audio format, though. I do enjoy some short story podcast episodes, but I think that has more to do with a narrator's voice.

So this is just something I've been curious about, especially those "first times" at listening to a complete recording of a book. What was your first audiobook? Did you enjoy it?

ljuliel I think if I remember right, it was The Help. I thought it was very good, with multiple narrators and they all did such a good job. It bumped up my rating from a 4 ( in print), to a 5 in audio. 1w
greenreads @ljuliel That's interesting. So it affects the experience of a book that much. Thanks! 1w
ljuliel I think a good narrator can make a book even better, but a poor one can ruin a really good book. It just takes a lot of listening and sampling until you find narrators you like, then you‘ll start searching for books by narrator also. It took me awhile to get the hang of listening to a book and retaining it, but once you do, they‘re very handy. I listen to audiobooks every single day. I hope you enjoy them too. 1w
greenreads @ljuliel I hope as well. 💛 1w

Hard to choose between pick and so-so. I would have liked more development of the fantasy element. But otherwise, the writing is eloquent, and the plight of the escaped slaves is powerful. The characterizations were vivid as well.

They‘d never seen the likes of this, but they‘d leave their mark on this new land, as surely as those famous souls at Jamestown, making it theirs through unstoppable racial logic. If niggers were supposed to have their freedom, they wouldn‘t be in chains. If the red man was supposed to keep hold of his land, it‘d still be his. If the white man wasn‘t destined to take this new world, he wouldn‘t own it now.

I *finally* got around to reading this. It was very good, but not quite what I expected. Seeing as it‘s, in part, about the Underground Railroad being and actual train line, I expected a more alternative history-ish/speculative fiction read. So I was a bit disappointed in Whitehead‘s lack of development of this idea (because it‘s so cool!), considering the title. Cora‘s journey, however, still makes for a heartbreaking yet wonderful read.

TheAromaofBooks I'm reading The Intuitionist right now (my first Whitehead book), and I was telling my husband last night that I think the story would be so much better if he either made his world MORE different from reality or just wrote straight historical fiction. The just-slightly-different thing annoys and somewhat confuses me haha 2w
Angitron I hear you @TheAromaofBooks. It‘s kinda like he says, “Well, why not?” I actually found The Intuitionist to be slightly more fantastical than Underground Railroad, but in light of what you‘re saying and thinking back on it (I haven‘t read it for a few years), it probably wasn‘t! 😂 (edited) 2w

I was super excited about reading this but the pace felt slow and meandering with too many characters. The brutality of slavery, the hope of the Underground Railroad that transports slaves to escape, and the nuances of the main characters make reading this worthwhile. "The world may be mean, but people don't have to be, not if they refuse."

A roller coaster of a story. I was expecting a bit more of a fantastical eliminate to the different states, since the book is sold as a Gulliver's Travel type of book. But it was a very well done book of a runaway slave. Cora is a character you will sympathize and pull for. She is well rounded and a great narrator.

I finished this book in a day as I just couldn't put it down. It is a terribly sad book but a superb book nonetheless. You follow the main character during her journey through slavery in America. It is as though each chapter transports you to a different story even though you are following one character (for the most part). This is an unforgettable book that deals with slavery in America.

While I'm on maternity leave there will be more trips to the library and less trips to the bookstore. We only have a small library as we live in a small town so selection will be somewhat limited. Picked up these three Historical Fiction books yesterday evening. Just started reading the tagged book which has been on my TBR for some time. Perfect for #AuthorAMonth .

#LibraryHaul #BookHaul #HistoricalFiction #TBR

TheAromaofBooks Do you have any kind of inter-library loan options? Our small town library is connected to the nearby state capitol's library system, so I can request books and have them sent down here. 3w
Jess861 @TheAromaofBooks We used to have interlibrary loans as we are only about 20 minutes away from a large city. However, our provincial government decided to cut that service in 2019 🙁 . I see the service has slowly been creeping back to some of the larger libraries in the province so I'm hoping that the service resumes eventually. (edited) 3w
