Thanks for the tag @Blackink_WhitePaper 😀

1. Tagged. At 944 pages, it was twice as long as it had to be.

2. Sometimes. I definitely have to be in the right mood. Sometimes I just want quick and intense over long and thorough.

I already have a tradition: the first book read in a year should be about #CormoranStrike ! The novel is very big, but it was easy for me to read it, perhaps because I really like the main characters! And the detective story is also good! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Despite being very lengthy and a bit confusing with numerous characters and a complicated storyline, I do think this series just keeps getting better and better. Love the evolving relationship between Cormoran and Robin. I really am hoping there is another book or two coming!

TheSpineView I agree that the series is getting better. I read somewhere at least 7 books in the series.🤞 2mo

I was a little let down by the 4th book in the series, but I‘m immediately hooked on this one. It‘s a 32 hour audiobook! But I‘ll get a lot of listening time this weekend when I take a road trip to Pennsylvania for my cousin‘s 1st birthday party.

I really enjoyed this fifth mystery- it‘s slow and it‘s as much about Strike and Robin as it is about the 40 year old mystery they are investigating. I didn‘t guess the ending (although all the clues were there) and even though both detectives had a lot going on personally, the story never felt too much like a soap drama. A long but enjoyable read! #bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks

I loved the character development of Robin and Strike In this novel. That was the best part of the story! The mystery was complex and daunting. But my did this need a good editor. 900+ pages as a bit much. It could easily have been cut by 100-200 pages and still have the same impact. As always, Robert Glenister did a phenomenal job narrating.

This is my second finish for #20in4

Cormoran and Robin take on a cold case, which the book blurb leads us to believe they‘ll be taken down a road of tarot, demonology, astrology etc. Though the case has some aspects of the occult, this story is more about the trials and tribulations of Cormoran and Robin, their feelings for each other, their families, personal loss, and where they stand in their relationship.
Troubled Blood is the best in the series and I cannot wait for book six.

There was a lot to unpack and this one and it‘s definitely my favorite of the series so far. I can‘t believe how long this book was, but I never lost interest the whole time. I found myself wanting to read it as much as possible. The cold case moved slowly but each new witness they interviewed added a fascinating layer. Both Cormoran and Robin worked through some major personal issues, giving us even more insight into their characters.

AvidReader25 That ending! Both solving the cold case and the interactions between the partners.

I loved that for the final reveal stepped away from the men hurting women narrative. In the end it was about brilliant women. One was smart enough to discover a serial killer and another who was the killer herself. That was so much more interesting ending than either of the two violent men who were the other suspects.

Summer reading & a first venture into reading a crime novel for me. It‘s a long one but it flew by. I enjoyed it, especially the feminist themes, & will definitely read the rest of the series too

Bookwomble It's awful that Rowling was subjected to domestic violence. It's awful that she uses her platform to promote transphobia. ☹ 6mo
WomanistBibliophile @Bookwomble as a survivor of male violence against women she has every right to speak out for women‘s safety. women who advocate for the right of women to safe services & spaces are promoting women‘s rights. JKR is courageous to speak out knowing full-well the misogyny, abuse & harassment women are subjected to for doing so. 6mo
Bookwomble @WomanistBibliophile Agreed, and she also promotes transphobia. The danger is abusive cis men, not oppressed trans-men and trans-women. Much of my work is with survivors of abuse perpetrated by cis men, so I do see the horrendous results of that. Some of my work is with trans people, and public transphobic rhetoric is a clear danger to their mental and physical health. Rowling is a big part of that problem, sadly. 6mo
WomanistBibliophile @Bookwomble it‘s so telling that people see protecting women‘s rights as “transphobia” & are quick to condemn women who speak on behalf of our rights as deserving of abuse, ostracism & blame. Ie, to use the tactics of male pattern abuse & misogyny against us in the name of being virtuous! #5 in the Cormoran Strike series
I love these books, I can‘t put them down when I‘m reading them. There was some controversy surrounding this one re: Rowling‘s opinions? of trans people but I don‘t get where this came from after reading this. Her comments when challenged were vague and that was weird but I‘m still kind of confused how it all came up in the first place.

Started this last night. I have LOVED the Cormoran Strike series but there are issues with this one ( I‘m vague on them beyond JK Rowling holds opinions re:trans folks ? that are extremely problematic) I bought this ages before I knew any of this & I‘ve decided to read it finally to figure out what is what. Also my barista (husband) made me a café frappé this morning ?

MyNamesParadise I own all of the Cormoran Strike books but haven‘t read any of them yet! I always mean to and then I go to the library and get more books and then more new releases come out and they get pushed to the back. I want to take the time to read them though. 6mo

I do love this couple Strike and Ella, and of course want them to get together. So you will have to read it to find out if it happens. They also solve a cold case of a missing doctor some 40 years ago, which may be connected to a serial killer. At over 900 pages couldn't really tell if it needed to be so long or not, but I liked it! #books

These books have one thing in common, over 500 pages! Admittedly the Babylon Berlin and Once and Future Witches is just over 500 pages. Troubled Blood makes up for it at over 900 pages. A Little Life over 600 pages. I am looking for a new job hence I decided to tackle some big books!

This is the 5th book in the series. Cormoran Strike is asked to help find Margot Bamborough who went missing in 1974. He is visiting his family in Cornwall and most of the book is about introducing Strike's family members. This book is a bit long but does further the relationship of Strike and Robin. I'm looking forward to the next installment to see where their relationship is going next. Robin herself is also juggling a messy divorce.

EadieB This complex case has leads that include tarot cards, a psychopathic serial killer and witnesses who cannot all be trusted. They learn that even cases decades old can prove to be deadly. It's best to start with book 1 if you are interested in reading this series. 7mo

I have enjoyed all of the books in this series and this one has become my favorite. Strike and Robin investigate a 40-year-old cold case; the disappearance of a young, married, doctor, and mother of a young daughter. The victim's daughter hires Strike and Robin to find out what happened to her mother and gives them a timeframe of 1 year. Rowling tells the story with so much detail that I quickly felt immersed in the story and characters' lives.

LauraBrook This has been on my “must read soon” stack since the pub date. Really need to bump it up. Glad you loved it, it‘s such a good series! 9mo
NatalieR @LauraBrook I totally support bumping it up on your TBR stack!! 😁 It‘s definitely long at 32 hours on audio. But when I feel like I‘m hanging out with really interesting people, I don‘t mind at all 🤓 I hope you love it too! 9mo

That-Bookish-Hiker I have been putting this book off because it‘s 900 pages. I remember when it was delivered and I saw how thick it was 😳 and saying “why is this crime thriller 900 pages!?!!” 😂 9mo
TheKidUpstairs @That-Bookish-Hiker I love Strike and Robin so much, but if the next one is this long again I'm out. So many side cases and unnecessary stuff in here, there were multiple "recap" sections of Strike and Robin writing case notes and summaries to each other. It's still an entertaining enough read, and it didn't take me long, but the story could have been told in half the pages. 9mo

A bit of a task getting through some of this, but well worth it in the end. I felt more connected to Strike and Robin this time around, but some of the side plots (other cases) were yawners. Maybe that was why this one just felt a bit more realistic than some of the past books - life is just not so glamorous a lot of the time.

I love Strike and Robin. I really do. But this latest book is just WAY too long. EDIT!!!! I'm on page 320 (only a third of the way through this behemoth), and there's now 5 pages of "case notes" aka: "I know this book is too long and there are too many side cases, so I'm just going to recap everything we've learned so far about the main case." I don't mind a when the story needs it, but this one really could have been edited down.

Ruthiella When authors get as big as JK Rowling (or Stephen King) I think their publishers are afraid to edit them. 9mo
TheKidUpstairs @Ruthiella I totally agree. It's unfortunate, because no matter how good someone is (or especially how popular), every writer benefits from a great editor! 9mo

A library copy editor at work! I borrowed this one from the library, and some one just couldn't help correcting prize to prise (for the verb).

Worth noting, this is not a typo, just an international style issue. It's the American edition, where prize is the accepted spelling. Here in Canada (and the rest of the English speaking world), prise is correct.

Moonprismpower I mean I get it? Because American here. And ordering editions specific to your/my country is not always possible. But as a librarian marking up a book that‘s not yours is a no no. 😬🤣 I bet the next reader may enjoy the correction though. 🤔😁 9mo

This series has continued to get better each book, and this is my favorite so far. The mystery is great: complex and layered and chock-full of twists. But the characters of Strike and Robin and how they‘ve developed over these 5 books are what I come for and love the most. So much detail in this great story stretched luxuriously over a year in their lives... I just want more.

The audiobook is perfection.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thoughts about the author ⬇️

sprainedbrain I told myself I wasn‘t going to read this after JKR showed, then doubled down on, her ridiculous and dangerous transphobic views. I would never make excuses for her or in any way agree with her narrow-minded bullshit—I lost all respect for her as a human. But I‘m weak and can apparently separate my feelings about her from my feelings about her writing, which in the case of the Strike series, is freaking incredible. Checked out from the library. 11mo

This book was so good. I preordered it and it has been on my TBR list since it was published. I should not have put it off so long because it is my favorite of the series so far. I was hesitant to read this one but I like Strike and got curious. It was a good mystery with shades of Agatha Christie, and Robin and Strike's relationship is slowly developing. I liked how the detectives slowly unravelled all the threads and didn't mind the long detours from the mystery because it filled out the characters more. I've never really liked Robin but found her much more relatable in this book.

bernadette There is controversy around this novel and Rowling‘s out of book comments on transgender issues. I need to educate myself on trans issues before commenting because I think I don‘t have the context for the objections raised. I‘m sorting through the issues to better understand. 11mo
