The first 1/3 was a bit slow and confusing for me, but im glad I stuck with it. Rad story, and so so much development (characters, plot, social analogy) - in fact, this is probably why I didn‘t like the beginning- everything felt too β€œone note”, and then BAM the whole thing just happens! Maybe this coulda been written differently, I dno. I almost let it go but decided to stay after reading some reviews, so thanks y‘all, keep up the good work 🫑

Light Bringer, Red Rising 6, and The Brothers Hawthorne, a new The Inheritance Games book are among my most anticipated along with Hell Bent on Tuesday.

Finished book 90 of the year! In this story, the legend of King Arthur lives through the bloodlines of the original knights to their present-day descendants. However, Deonn makes the story even better with a black heroine. Briana suffers the loss of her mother while struggling to find a place in her own university and the Order itself. It adds reality to the fantasy - how discrimination persists today. I need more reminders if what I don‘t know.

Having a black female main character that I can relate to was already an amazing thing to me. But the characters and concepts in itself is interesting and complex. The book kept me wanting to read more and the fact that it centers around a character within an unfamiliar environment made me relate even more. Bree, the main character, does seem to lack sympathy to others situations but it could either just be her age or her own trauma.

I loved characters and I really could relate to them. I felt for them.

This was magical and mysterious, I really loved the atmosphere with dark tunnels and woods.

This was long book, there is no denying it, but there happened something all the time and that kept reading interesting.

Reread this one and it's still just as amazing as before!! I think Tracy does such an amazing job at creating characters that are both flawed and in pain, and loveable. Bree is such an amazing character and her growth is πŸ’―. Likewise, the world and #magic building is so well thought out. EVERYTHING counts for something and I was always engaged. This is an interesting fantasy, and I loved the magical world building around the King Arthur legend. There is a side romance between Bree and Nick. Luckily they don't proceed to a sexual romance, because Bree is far too young for that. A larger focus is Bree discovering her place in the world, and exploring her grief over her mother's recent death. This book also had a fair amount of action, especially at the end. 3.5 stars

Every bit as good the second time as it was the first and now I‘m even more excited to read the sequel. I also really enjoyed the short story from Selwyn‘s POV. This is a really, really smart YA urban fantasy and its mix of Arthurian legend, Black Girl Magic and southern Black culture is not only an adrenaline rush but also a really thoughtful exploration of grief, loss, power, identity and more. Can‘t wait to see what happens next!

Sequel is out on Tuesday which means a reread of the tagged book is in order… I really enjoyed this book the first time I read it and I‘m definitely excited to see where Deonn takes the story in the second book.

Ye GODS I love this novel. The Arthuriana! The literal Black Girl Magic! The PLOT TWIST AT THE END! I need Bloodmarked like I need air. #reread #yafantasy

So pissed. There were so many different relationships to and different rules surrounding magic. The protagonist is in an Academically rigorous program but rarely mentions going to class or studying. Of course there was no ending because why settle one storyline before starting another? That said, the author made me interested in a type of fantasy I usually avoid like the plague.

Why did it take me so long to read this?!! I could not put it down & that ending!!! I need book 2 ASAP!!

I guess I should actually start my book club pick even though I am sure it is going to be another meeting of just me.. We meet 1 week from today & nobody has shown any interest. We are really struggling tryin to get the local Teens involved at the library.

Okay, I know, I like most things I read, but this…this is something special. Just a *searing* story of magic and tradition, friendship and betrayal, love and loss and the indelible impact both can have on our lives. Told through a lens of African traditions and Arthurian folklore, as well as slavery in the American south and its long-reaching ramifications. If you‘d asked me if that would work, I‘d have doubts, but IT DOES. A true must-read.

Bree witnesses a demon attack her first night on campus and unlocks a hidden memory. She‘s seen magic before; the night her mom died and someone stole the memories of what happened from her. She‘ll do whatever it takes to find out what really happened to her mom and what connection she has to magic, including infiltrate The Knights of the Round Table and take them down from the inside. She might even convince King Arthur‘s descendent to help her.

Well, I didn‘t finish either of the books that I hoped would get me a second #bookspinbingo πŸ˜† But hey, one bingo is still good and I‘m really pleased with my reading this month! I haven‘t fallen like this for a book in a while! I switched repeatedly between print book, ebook, and audiobook so I didn‘t have to stop reading no matter what else I was doing. I did not see where this was going, and I love that I was surprised! Mostly, I am gleeful at learning how maternal ancestors are incorporated in this magical world. I will be obsessively checking for an arc of book two until I find it or it‘s published. βš”οΈ

Wow! What a fantastic start to my reading year! πŸ™ŒπŸ» I loved every bit of this book. It has all the YA tropes in all the right places to make it feel comfortable and familiar, but it goes out and deep in all new ways. I loved the fancy European high magic, the use of Arthurian legend, the dark academia setting, and the way Deonn did not shy from confronting all that colonizer history. Plus the inclusion of African syncretic magical traditions!

I started this book yesterday at 9:00pm and finished it this morning at 4:00am. I have not read a book overnight in a long time. This one was amazing.

One of the best books I read this year!

I loved this one! Pages, Squires, Vassels, Rootcraft, Bloodcraft, mediums, legacy, belonging, grief and love. Bree learned to find herself and grow in a place that as she said, was built by people who looked like her, but was never for them or her. The Order is a microcosm of the world at large and Bree has decided to step up and claim her place in it. Chunkster, but every page a gem. Ready for book two!
