The Darkwood is off limits. It is said to be home to witches. When an outing goes away, Imanuelle is forced to venture into the woods and defy the Prophet. Will this leave her unfazed enough to continue in her life of submission and devotion to the Father? Or does this help her to realize just how wrong it is to be a woman in Bethel?
Finished up this amazing read. This book was everything I wanted the tv show Salem to be. I loved the eerie ambience. I originally thought that this was historical fiction, but loved the originality of recreating similar religions and cultures. I found this book kept building and building and really nailed the ending. It unfolded in a great manner and the pacing really worked.
Oh I definitely needed this book. Puritan, cultist, witchy, "Burn that shit to the ground" vibes. I couldn't put it down!

It appears we are stuck in our house today and the storm continues. That means the slow cooker is on, Movies being watched and lots of reading and puttering around to do.
Tagged #audiobook on while I make up some waffles for breakfast 😊

A brilliant, sinister tale of what happens when witch craft and religious fanaticism meet. I was hooked by the story and it had pace that kept you reading. It is dark, gory and a little horror but that made it a good read.

Excellent story! Grabbed my attention from the first page and I couldn‘t put it down. Wanted a little more from the ending but I‘m like that with some books. Especially the ones I like because I‘m not ready for the story to end.
First morning commute in a while but I get to get stuck into this thrilling horror or so the cover says. Happy Hump Day Littens. Have a great day 😀

Here is my wrapup for October 2021. All in all it was a pretty good reading month, with pretty high reading marks on everything. Still some questioning regarding Soulless, but I‘ll have a better understanding of my feelings after the next book.
4/5
This was a fun read, especially for Halloween. It was engaging for a long time, then very exciting about 3/4 into the story. I would recommend this book. I don't think there was enough development around many of the characters, though. It was a great storyline and fun, but I think the author could have done better in that regard. I don't know. I'm also only just warming up to fantasy, so...? Send rec's if you have them!
Very creepy, witchy book that isn't my usual read. But I enjoyed it for this October spooky season. It has the whole ugly patriarchal theme that is horrible and women suffering. But the storyline of Immanuel was intriguing.
The pacing was a bit off for me on this book, but overall I enjoyed it - great witchy vibes for the season, perfect to curl up with under a blanket with a cup of tea! #screamathon #witchinthetitle

A witchy read in the vein of The Handmaid's Tale, there was no way I wasn't going to love this book. Lots of creepy bits, and a strong female MC. #Screamathon @4thhouseontheleft
#unpopularopinion but I didn‘t care for this book. Despite an intriguing premise, I found it basic and lackluster. Too many themes that are never adequately addressed. And that ending was utterly disappointing.

5⭐️ yes, yes and yes… this book was so good. It had a false accusations, conspiracy, political injustice, and seriously dark witches. I received this book last year one of my swaps, and finally got a chance to read it now. I‘m so mad at myself for waiting. I loved everything about the story. This is also my #bookspin for #bookspinbingo. #TeamHendrix #scarathlon2021 #scarathlon
Fitting seasonal read with a strong feminist core.
Its setting - in both time and place - is fictional, but pulls strongly from historic influence (17th century Salem, the Crusades) as well as classic dystopian stories (Handmaid‘s Tale, for example).
Those who like witchy things, and/or have felt the burn of righteous fury over patriarchal injustices, should pick this one up.
My #Screamathon reading is going well. I'm 2 for 2 on the challenges. The tagged was my book for last week's challenge. I plan on reading The Midwinter Witch for this week's challenge.

4.5🌟 This book was a fabulous creepy read. It has all of the magic and darkness one would expect from the title all wrapped up in a story that shows that it isn't always monsters that are the most horrifying. I think this book works well on its own, but I will definitely check out the sequel when it comes out.

I started reading this yesterday for the #Screamathon "Diversify your horror shelf" challenge, and I am loving it so far. I just want to read the day away, but alas, I have to work and have a mound of chores to do today.

A little culty. A little witchy. A little Salem Witch Trials-eque. A whole lot of badass woman. And fuck the patriarchy!

Immanuelle Moore has carried the stains of her parents sins her entire life, her parents union was forbidden by her strict religious community of Bethel. Her father was an outsider and executed while her mother fled into the woods. Immanuelle did everything she could to fit in and and follow the rules, but she was always treated as an outsider.
I am posting one book per day from my to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new - don‘t judge me I have a lot of books.
Join the fun if you want. This is day 123.

Slow at first but def held my attention. Long read but good.
Almost done reading this book and it‘s such a beautiful, tense, unique and eerie written book. It‘s a dark and dramatic tale of oppression and rebellion, ideology and morality. “A young woman named Immanuelle Moore, lives in a rigid, puritanical society when she discovers dark powers within herself.”
#TBRDeckofCards @Clwojick
I really enjoyed this one! ? There were some sections that felt a little slow, and things tended to just get "figured out" quickly by the main character without any real struggle, but overall I enjoyed it.
I loved the characters and the setting. I listened to the audiobook and felt it really helped to create the atmosphere and tone.
I'm excited to see what happens in the next book. ?
Feb #DoubleSpin this is about a puritanical community with misogyny religious believes and traditions. I didn‘t like much the end but still love this story full of action, mystery, suspense, paranormal and some romance. It is about prophesies, visions, lies, betrayals, curses and witches. Love the cover😱3.9⭐️Love author acknowledgements specially when she mentioned her mom. Someone told me about a sequel, is that true? Thanks @Chrissyreadit ⬇️
This book reminds me of Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale but with a magical spin: a religious society located at the edge of an enchanted forest and governed by powerful prophets with multiple wives, some of whom are in their teens. I thought the protagonist was well-developed, and the story was persuasive.
“From the light came the Father. From the darkness, the mother. That is both the beginning and the end.”
This book started out good but I wasn‘t crazy about it. It‘s my own personal faults but I was hoping for a more focused telling of the stories of the 4 witches. How they got accused, maybe Immanuelle seeing that they weren‘t “evil women” and I wanted her to join them to destroy the church and patriarchy, not kill the most interesting characters. I just wanted more strong women! But I guess it‘s a series. I will probably still try book 2 tho
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 A girl lives in a puritanical society plus witches. Oddly, this book was just what I needed. It‘s dark and only slightly creepy. It has a good heroine to root for and is well written. I found it well paced and not very predictable. I‘m grateful this was recommended by myTBR bibliologist because I‘m not sure I‘d have picked it up otherwise! #getTBR
This one is on sale today for $1.99. It looks like it‘s the same for Kindle, Apple, B&N (Nook?), and Kobo.
This was a pick for me last year. I didn‘t realize it was the beginning of a series, but I‘m really interested in next one, which is coming out in 2022.
Do you ever pick up a book and just KNOW it‘s going be 5 stars? That‘s hope I feel about The Year of The Witching and I‘m honestly kicking myself for not reading it sooner 😂 I‘m only about 100 pages in, but I‘m so hoping it only gets better!
I have the Secret Keeper too- and that rounds out the books I will commit to from my #newyearwhodis list. My goal is one a month.
This was an interesting audiobook about Misogyny and religious control. It was not an easy book to listen to but it was a good book.
I'm a big fan of this! It was the perfect book for Halloween and I really wish I had read it in October. Immanuelle wanders into the cursed woods by her town and meets the 4 witches who almost destoryed her town years ago. She accidentally puts into motion their curses and must find a way to stop them before the town all dies.
Wow, I‘ve read some good books in the past few months! This was fantastic, it kinda reminded me of that movie, The Village? It has the same 1700s zealots feel to it, with witches and haunted forests, prophets & burnings. It‘s not a sunny book, it‘s very dark but well worth reading. I loved it, it ended on an open end so I‘m hoping for a sequel. Please?? 5⭐️
I was blown away by this debut novel, set in a polygamous puritanical society, where the Darkwood is forbidden, witches are a thing, and one girl discovers the demons that live inside oneself. It‘s horrific and graphic in parts, yet the writing is so beautiful and entrancing. I devoured this in just a few sittings - given my limited free time at the moment, that‘s saying something for sure! Thanks to #NetGalley and the publisher for the #ARC .
