The Candymakers | Wendy Mass
63 posts | 46 read | 16 to read
Four children have been chosen to compete in a national competition to find the tastiest confection in the country. Who will invent a candy more delicious than the Oozing Crunchorama or the Neon Lightning Chew? Logan, the Candymaker's son, who can detect the color of chocolate by touch alone? Miles, the boy who is allergic to merry-go-rounds and the color pink? Daisy, the cheerful girl who can lift a fifty-pound lump of taffy like it's a feather? Or Philip, the suit-and-tie wearing boy who's always scribbling in a secret notebook? This sweet, charming, and cleverly crafted story, told from each contestant's perspective, is filled with mystery, friendship, and juicy revelations.

I‘m so behind on reviews—this was last month‘s #MGBuddyRead! It was a fun adventure about 4 kids competing in a candy-making competition. While I enjoyed getting to know each character & the “same day, different perspective” structure worked for me, there was one backstory I just didn‘t buy—it didn‘t fit with the rest of the book. The ending felt a bit contrived as well, but the friendships and the personal resolutions each kid finds were—sweet.😆

🍫 🍭What's your favorite candy?🍭🍫
Take 5, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, and Chocolate-covered marshmallow egg/tree/pumpkin shapes here!

This was a light pick for me, but might be better for the intended MG kids. We follow 4 kids through a candymaking competition with layers of the day including through each kid's POV. This isn't just marshmallow fluff, though. These kids are dealing with some real life issues and ⬇️

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick and there's some humor. Early on, uptight rich kid Phillip says "we're losing daylight here" and he's exactly the type of kid you'd expect to say it!? Daisy has an outlandish background and it was rather unbelievable.
This had been on my radar for a couple of years so I was glad for the chance to read the book. Keep the candy close by! Thanks @megnews #mgmarch #middlegrademarch

Woohoo! I finished my 24th book this month! One more to go. I was hesitant to read this book, not because it was long, because I don‘t really like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (especially the movie!) and someone compared it to that. It‘s not like it. It‘s so much better and there are plenty of surprises, great friendships and a “sweet” ending. I liked it a lot. #100YEARS100BOOKS #BookSpinBingo #8 (2 bingos) #MGMarch #23

amber_ldsmom I thought it was really cute with a lot of good messages, but the whole spy thing was a pretty hokey. I wish she had had a different story. 3y
BarbaraJean @amber_ldsmom I totally agree about the spy thing!! It just didn‘t fit. If there had been other elements of the story that were similarly exaggerated, maybe it could have worked, but there weren‘t. It seemed so out of place. 3y
amber_ldsmom @BarbaraJean I‘m so glad someone agrees with me! 3y
See All 17 Comments
ravenlee @amber_ldsmom @BarbaraJean exactly! Daisy could have been after the secrets without there being this whole ridiculous spy industrial farm thing. It felt like pandering (how can we sell this to a broader market? I dunno, throw some spy junk in there?) and was distracting from the character development that was going on. I‘m curious to read the next book but not rushing out to get it. 3y
mrp27 I liked it but wasn't wowed. It felt it missing that whimsical and magical touch. 3y
megnews @amber_ldsmom @BarbaraJean @ravenlee @mrp27 I‘m wondering your thoughts on the butterfly? 3y
sblbooks I agree with what everyone else is saying regarding daisy's storyline. Overall, a cute story. 3y
mrp27 I liked it and I liked the quote you posted about it but I don't think it added a whole lot more to the story for me. 3y
ravenlee Like many things in the story, the butterfly seemed nice to me but a little belabored. I think the author needs to give readers/kids a little more credit and not try so hard to spoon feed. 3y
Butterfinger @ravenlee @sblbooks @amber_ldsmom @BarbaraJean I felt the same way. Being raised as a spy was so over the top. I think I put it in my review. I couldn't quite figure out how to choose its genre so I finally went with fantasy because of the spying. 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I didn't love it, but it wasn't a bad way to spend a few hours. A little heavy-handed, but I'm not the intended demographic. I literally laughed early on when Phillip said "we're losing daylight here." Uptight or not, what kid says that phrase?!? I kind of enjoyed him as a little jerk. I think if this was Daisy's first spy mission for her family, it would've sat better with me, but it ended up being too wild. 3y
megnews @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Probably repeating what he‘s heard his dad say. I definitely didn‘t care for his dad. 3y
Bookgoil Not as good as some other candy books I‘ve read but pretty fun. 3y
SaturnDoo @megnews I am in the unpopular opinion of Daisy's story. I think her story is what kept me interested enough to keep reading. It brought in some elements(magic and fantasy) that were unexpected when the other 3 characters had pretty predictable, slow story lines.I also think Daisy's story is what made the book a fun read. I rather enjoyed the whole spy storyline. Overall, I enjoyed this book and look forward to reading book 2. 3.5 stars 3y
Lmstraubie I'm so sorry to be late to responding. I haven't gotten any Litsy notifications in about a month and a half. Not sure why, but trying to figure it out. Please keep tagging me!! 3y

BarbaraJean The structure worked for me. I felt like it heightened the mystery, and the author did a good job of not repeating too much we‘d already read—seeing scenes from new perspectives usually added something instead of feeling repetitive. 3y
ravenlee It took me well into the second section to appreciate the structure - which is when I really started to enjoy the book. Up to that point it felt too much like other books I‘ve read before that were done better (the Lemoncello series in particular). But once the other POVs started interlacing it got much better. 3y
mrp27 I enjoyed the approach, it was different and I liked hearing the other perspectives. At the same time it also felt like it slowed the story down. (edited) 3y
See All 11 Comments
sblbooks I think it worked. 3y
Roary47 After I realized what was going on I liked it. This is why audio reading can be a challenge sometimes. 3y
Butterfinger So so for me. I didn't enjoy the same scenario in different perspectives. It picked up when Logan was the narrator again and they were all in it together. 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick A few passages began to feel redundant, but I ultimately enjoyed experiencing the events little by little through each of the children. I also thought it was clever how Logan didn't really think about burns and we learned of them through the other children. 3y
megnews @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick yes when I got to Miles I thought “wait did I miss something?” 3y
Bookgoil It was okay I think maybe if we spent more time in just two characters and met the others that would have been fine 3y
SaturnDoo I normally like multiple POVs but this one got a bit repetitive at times which bogged the story down and made it lengthier than it should have been. But overall it worked out to be ok. @megnews 3y
megnews @SaturnDoo I agree. I‘m trying to think how she could use a similar concept of one day without being so repetitive 3y

amber_ldsmom Miles‘ story was my favorite part. It was so tender and sweet. Also, an unexpected backstory for a kids‘ book. 3y
BarbaraJean I got annoyed when I got to Daisy‘s section. I felt like the spy thing was far-fetched and out of place when the rest of the book seemed like it was supposed to be realistic. I just didn‘t buy it. I did really enjoy the characters, especially once we got to know Philip better. 3y
ravenlee I agree with @BarbaraJean that Daisy‘s section was too much. I figured she was after the secrets, but the whole spy mansion thing was over the top. My favorite part was having bits of Logan‘s story revealed through the others‘ sections. Oh, and I didn‘t care for the note at the beginning telling us what to look for - it should have just unfolded instead of being an assignment. (edited) 3y
See All 12 Comments
mrp27 I enjoyed the beginning and the set up of the factory and Miles story. But by the time it got to Daisy and Phillip I was getting bored. 3y
megnews @mrp27 @ravenlee @BarbaraJean @amber_ldsmom I generally enjoy multiple POV‘s and it was interesting how the one day looked through each persons‘ eyes. At the same time , by the 3rd or 4th time through it got a little long. 3y
megnews Oops I should have answered that in the next question ⬆️ 3y
sblbooks Daisy's story was not believable, therefore it was my least favorite. 3y
Roary47 Yeah I agree Daisys story was over the top. 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Even though Daisy's POV was totally unrealistic, I liked the beginning the least. Logan felt like he was trying too hard and I only appreciated him once I began to see him through the others. 3y
Bookgoil Probably going between characters so often 3y
SaturnDoo @megnews My least favorite part was Phillip's story. Phillip jumped around on my nerves from the very beginning and was my least favorite character of all of them. I had a very hard time relating to him and what he stood for. Although Daisy's story was a little far fetched, I found her story to be my favorite. It was more interesting than the rest. It contained more action with magical/fantasy type elements to it. 3y
megnews @SaturnDoo I agree about Phillip. I‘m glad he came around in the end. 3y

sblbooks I had no idea. 3y
megnews @sblbooks neither did I 3y
Roary47 I thought is was a secret to even the candy makers, but was like a natural fruit antioxidant. 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I suspected the secret ingredient was something like love or an effervescent oxygen. They mentioned so many others, it was hard to pin down something secret. 3y
Bookgoil Something very odd I wasn‘t sure 3y
SaturnDoo @megnews I suspected the secret ingredient would be something along the lines of what it was simply because all other ingredients were talked about throughout the book. 3y

What ingredients would you use? (Bonus: what is your favorite candy?)

amber_ldsmom I was trying to think of this throughout the book, but I just don‘t know. Something chocolatey, definitely. Favorite candy is orange chocolate. 3y
ravenlee That‘s a tough one. The candies I like are generally not too sweet, or else I enjoy them in small doses. I really have no idea what I would come up with for a contest. 3y
mrp27 That thought was in the back of my mind the entire book. My favorite candy/chocolate are Baby Ruth. Goo goo clusters or Reese's peanut butter cups. I also enjoy starbursts jelly beans. I think I'd invent something in the chocolate category. 3y
See All 25 Comments
megnews @amber_ldsmom @ravenlee @mrp27 Reese‘s used to be my fav. Then for a long time dark chocolate. Now I‘m a milk chocolate fan. And I‘m kind of plain. I don‘t like nuts or caramel so I felt anything I‘d make would probably not win for creativity. 3y
sblbooks How about a pickle flavor gummy candy? 3y
sblbooks My favorite type of candy is soft caramel chews. 3y
mrp27 @megnews I'm so opposite, I love all kinds of nuts or caramel in my chocolate! 3y
megnews @mrp27 I‘m used to that. Everyone I know does! 3y
megnews @sblbooks ew! I don‘t think I could eat a pickled flavor candy but I‘m sure there‘s a market for it! 3y
sblbooks @megnews I tried to think of something I haven't heard of before.🍬 I do love pickles. 3y
megnews @sblbooks I love pickles too. Just hard to imagine them in a different texture. 3y
sblbooks @megnews have you tried dill pickle potato chips? 3y
Roary47 I‘d make a blue raspberry hard candy that would be low in sugar and blue dye. I‘d bring back the whistle stick, but it would be biodegradable. 😊💛 3y
megnews @Roary47 I love blue raspberry hard candy. And sour apple. When he was making the harmonica I couldn‘t quit thinking about that whistle. I wonder if some old fashioned candy stores still have them? 3y
megnews @sblbooks no I didn‘t know there were any. Now that sounds good. 3y
Butterfinger @megnews @Roary47 that is a great idea. Bring the whistle back. My hometown candy shop may have them. I kid you not, they have the candy cigarettes. 3y
megnews @Butterfinger we have a candy shop a few towns over that has some old fashioned candy. I‘m going to look there next time I go. Kids don‘t know what they‘re missing nowadays 😆 @Roary47 (edited) 3y
megnews @Butterfinger @Roary47 I used to fill my kids Easter baskets with that old time candy. That place also has the cigarettes! I couldn‘t believe it 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I think I'd make some sort of candy with dark & milk chocolate and raspberry, like a bon bon. My favorites are Take 5, Snickers, and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. 3y
megnews @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick ooh dark and milk chocolate combo is the best of both worlds! 😊 3y
Bookgoil Something with marshmallows and cherry coating cause I‘m a weirdo 3y
SaturnDoo @megnews and @sblbooks I love dill pickle chips. I love pickles too so I would totally be down for some dill pickle gummy bears. I wonder if Jelly Belly jelly beans has a dill pickle flavor. I know Sonic had a pickle slushy last year or the year before last. I tried it and really liked it LOL 3y
SaturnDoo @megnews being that my name is Robin, I would probably develop some type of egg shaped blueberry or blue raspberry hard candy. I would name it Robin's Blue Eggs-troidanaire 😂 3y
megnews @SaturnDoo ooh a nest made out of chocolate with blue raspberry eggs. That sounds like a great Easter candy. 3y
sblbooks @SaturnDoo I don't know if they have a dill pickle Jelly Bean? I'll have to try the slushy. I like your idea of the robin's egg candy. 3y

megnews 3. Logan‘s chocolate candy that turned to gum. 4 The Cocoa room. I‘m a sucker for chocolate. 3y
Deblovestoread I‘d love the chocolate into gum. Wasn‘t there a cotton candy room? If not, there should be. 😁 3y
amber_ldsmom 3. Miles‘ bee candy 4. Probably the taffy room 3y
See All 15 Comments
BarbaraJean I want to try Miles‘ Bee Happy candy... and the Oozing Crunchoramas! I‘d love to work in the Tropical Room with all the trees. 3y
ravenlee The bee candy sounded lovely, and the harmonicandy. Really, just about any of the chocolate. 3y
ravenlee And I think I‘d like to work in the growing room with all the trees. 3y
mrp27 I agree the Oozing Crunchoramas sounded amazing, or really anything chocolate. The taffy room sounded fun to work in, very physical! 3y
sblbooks The bee happy candy. I would like to rotate if I could. If I have to pick up only one, I guess the cocoa room. 3y
megnews @amber_ldsmom @BarbaraJean @ravenlee @sblbooks there seems to be a consensus on the 🐝 Happy candy. I thought they sounded very cute. 3y
Roary47 I‘ll go with any. I just love the candy and would like to work in the gummy bears or gummies room. Cause I‘d get to see smiling bears all the time. 3y
Butterfinger I would love to work inside the rainforest area. Wow! Just wow! Candy. If Logan had gotten it to work, I would choose his candy. Chocolate, gum, then back again. 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick 3. All of them, but I think I'd start with the Bee Happy candy. 4. I'm torn between the cocoa room & the rainforest. They were two extreme opposites. Maybe I'll alternate weekly. 3y
Bookgoil 3. I want them all but definitely the bee candy 4. that rainforest area sounded amazing 3y
SaturnDoo The candy I would like to try the most is the harmonicandy. I'm not real sure how I would feel about the chocolate gum combination. That would be a texture issue for me. I would most likely want to work in the rain forest/tropical room. That would be quite relaxing and a great place to read LOL @megnews 3y
megnews @SaturnDoo I remember bubble gum or bubblicious had a chocolate gum for a very brief time when I was young. I liked it but it must not have been popular. I love your reasoning about the rain forest. I may have to rethink my choice. 🤔 3y

megnews There‘s a part of me that would want to be Logan and live in a candy factory and eat candy all day. But I kind of started to feel sick when they chocolate pizza for lunch and thought how their teeth would be so bad. I was mad at Phillip til I felt sorry for him so not him. I think Miles‘ character was least developed. Daisy‘s life was interesting. I suppose either Miles or Daisy. 3y
Deblovestoread I think it is interesting that each of the 4 had good things and difficult things in their lives. I would probably choose Daisy. Being a spy always sounds fun. 3y
BarbaraJean Even though I don't have much of a sweet tooth, I'd pick Logan's life. I loved the atmosphere of the candy factory, and all of the supportive adults he had around him. And I'm sure with all the ingredients being grown on the grounds, there's more to eat besides candy!! 3y
See All 14 Comments
amber_ldsmom I would choose Miles‘ life. Nice and quiet with loving parents and lots of books. 3y
ravenlee I think Logan‘s life for the amazing support system and the unusual education opportunities, or Miles because his parents sound great, too. 3y
sblbooks Logan's life in the Candy Factory for me. 3y
mrp27 Everyone had some pros and cons to their lives but I think Logan or Daisy lives sounded the most fun and exciting. 3y
megnews @amber_ldsmom @ravenlee yes Miles‘s book life would be lovely too. Daisy‘s spying doesn‘t interest me quite as much as traveling the world @Kdgordon88 😊 3y
Roary47 I think Logan‘s. It seemed very loving and “sweet” all the time. 3y
Butterfinger I guess living in a spy family. How adventurous! 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I think Miles had the best overall life. It's more understated than the others, but normal. I can't imagine being rigorously trained to be a spy as a child. Daisy's life sounded difficult. 3y
Bookgoil I think Miles because it was the most normal ❤️ 3y
SaturnDoo @megnews Sorry I am late in answering. All of the characters had interesting lives so for me it's difficult to choose. Because of my love of books and chocolate, I would probably have to choose Miles or Logan.Although Daisy's life was interesting and full of adventure, it might be fun for a short period of time. My least favorite character was Phillip. 3y
megnews @SaturnDoo I agree. Especially about Phillip 3y

This book was a so so for me for the first part of the book. Then it picked up and got better. I think it was a bit repetitive which made it long for a middle grade reader (or myself). I also think I came in with too high of expectations. There will never be another Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

The text does not exactly match the fun cover. Plenty of real worries and issues that all children face: how to belong, accidents, collaboration. I absolutely adored it. I couldn't decide what genre this book would be and decided a child spy was unrealistic so fantasy it is.

I‘m off to a slow start but first #mgmarch book completed. I enjoyed this one, it had a clever structure, a mystery and a common mg theme of friendship. Also had some major Willy Wonka vibes and I craved all the candy while reading. My only complaint is it was rather long thus becoming a tad repetitive.

I had a rough start with this, but it grew on me as the POVs shifted. The first section strongly resembled Escape from Mr Lemoncello‘s Library (which it predates so maybe the other way around), but the rest of it was different enough. I figured out Daisy pretty quickly and sorta Miles, but it was a fun read. Need to find the sequel. #MGBuddyRead #MGMarch

ravenlee @megnews it‘s funny that I just recently read Charlie for the first time, so I could see the influence there. That introduction thing threw me, but it made more sense once the narrator shifted away from Logan. It‘s worth sticking to it, I think. 3y

The Candymakers tells the story of four kids who enter a candy making contest to make the newest candy sensation. All four are hiding deep secrets that if revealed could change everything they all know about each other and themselves. The story is told from all four points of view, you relive the same events, but from all their perspectives.

Day 16 of #ChillingPhotoChallenge This is the book I recommend the most at school to any student who asks for a book recommendation, it is by far one of my favorite books and it involves one of my favorite things, “Candy”!

brandybear22 Love pagemaster! @kgriffith this should be a date night plan 5y
kgriffith @brandybear22 I‘m down, just tell me whether you own the movie or we need to find it/ buy it online, and of course, what snacks are required for this viewing ;) 5y
MotionChickness @rather_be_reading @Seekingtardis @madamereadsalot1 @brandybear22 @kgriffith Yessss!!! One of my most rented from blockbuster as a kid 😂. I know we‘re in a digital age and it‘s available at the tip of our fingers, BUT it was in the bargain bin for like $3.70 at Walmart; if you happen to find yourself there and care to browse. 😬🙌🏻😍 (edited) 5y
kgriffith @Stephuhhnieee love a good nostalgia buy! I own Howard the Duck for the same reason 😃 5y
MotionChickness @kgriffith Ahh I forgot about Howard!! Love the bargain bins ☺️ Usually brings up a good find! 5y

BookishTrish Your allergic to gelatin!?! I could not deal with that. Also sorry if I have ever sent you gummies. 6y
LA_Mead @BookishTrish lol it‘s a pretty weird allergy! It‘s because I‘m allergic to beef and most gelatins are made with beef! No worries! I don‘t think you‘ve ever sent me gummies 😊 6y
