Miss Austen | Gill Hornby
"A deeply imagined and deeply moving novel. Reading it made me happy and weepy in equally copious amounts." --Karen Joy Fowler For fans of Jo Baker's Longbourn, a witty, poignant novel about Cassandra Austen and her famous sister, Jane.Whoever looked at an elderly lady and saw the young heroine she once was?England, 1840. For the two decades following the death of her beloved sister, Jane, Cassandra Austen has lived alone, spending her days visiting friends and relations and quietly, purposefully working to preserve her sister's reputation. Now in her sixties and increasingly frail, Cassandra goes to stay with the Fowles of Kintbury, family of her long-dead fianc, in search of a trove of Jane's letters. Dodging her hostess and a meddlesome housemaid, Cassandra eventually hunts down the letters and confronts the secrets they hold, secrets not only about Jane but about Cassandra herself. Will Cassandra bare the most private details of her life to the world, or commit her sister's legacy to the flames? Moving back and forth between the vicarage and Cassandra's vibrant memories of her years with Jane, interwoven with Jane's brilliantly reimagined lost letters, Miss Austen is the untold story of the most important person in Jane's life. With extraordinary empathy, emotional complexity, and wit, Gill Hornby finally gives Cassandra her due, bringing to life a woman as captivating as any Austen heroine.

I am regretting borrowing this book from the library and not being able to add it to my shrine to JA. It was a lovely fictionalized look at the lives of Jane and Cassandra Austin from Cassy‘s perspective ( quite a few Bigheads in the story to keep it on the JA moral path)

In the NYT article about the new Persuasion movie on Netflix, GH sums up the basic moral issues in Jane Austen‘s work; “Nobody Likes A Bighead” has me laughing out loud and thinking of the chapter a day of Longbourn going on now with @BarkingMadRun and Mr Collins springs to mind 🤣🤣

This was a cosy read. I was really fascinated to find out more about Jane, her sister Cassandra and her best friend Eliza and their lives but I would have liked a bit more depth. Too many other characters. The past storyline was defo more interesting than the “present” too. But overall a comforting and interesting read. 😉

I'm a fan of anything Jane Austen and this book was a really enjoyable read. It follows her sister Cassandra's later life, as she reflects back on her sister's and her own life through reading old letters from the past. It's a wonderful peek into the life and history of the Austen sisters through semi fictional prose. Very well written and I even had a little cry at the end. A good sign, in my book!

IMHO #Pemberlittens we owe a great debt to Cassandra.

Because of her housekeeping Jane was able to have time to write.

She painted the only known picture of Jane.

Yes she burned most of Jane's letters but I'm sure she had a reason. What remains is foundation to understanding Jane's life.

Let's celebrate her birthday. Buy/Bake a Cupcake. Raise a glass or teacup to Cassandra.

The story is a gentle fiction about the times. It jumps from Cassandra's present time to the past, beautifully interspersed with the letters from her sister. Plus some poetry and extracts from her books. Generally these sorts of stories are a bit slow for me but I like to mix up my reading and this was a really interesting story. 15pts for #MerryReaders #WinterGames2020 #Netgalley 4*

Just because Jane gets all the attention doesn‘t mean Cassandra isn‘t worthy of at least one novel of her own. I delighted in listening to this audiobook covering Cassandra‘s mission to protect her sister‘s reputation, which prompted the narration to jump to different points in Jane‘s life. It‘s as full of delightful and frustrating and hilarious characters as any of Jane‘s novels.

Loved this! Wonderful reimagination of Cassandra's visit to family to "rescue" Jane's letters, famously destroyed to preserve her image (possibly: who knows).

If you're a Janeite you might want to pick this up, and enjoy imagined letters between Jane and her extended family (as it doesn't look like the real thing is ever going to turn up: sadness).

Recommended.

Here in this room was all that her sister needed:
good conversation in which she felt no inhibition; time and space to write, with an intelligent audience to listen; her family around her, with whom she could be her own self. These were the conditions upon which her happiness, or her equilibrium at least, dependent. Were they altogether too much for a single woman to ask? Just these small things.

Perfection.❤️

Hornby‘s writing is very Austenesque, so reading this fictionalized tale about Jane‘s beloved sister, Cassandra, late in her life working to shape Jane‘s legacy feels a lot like reading an Austen novel. It‘s witty, charming, and beautiful. I loved the jumps (via letters) back Cassandra and Jane‘s earlier days, and was moved to tears more than once.

Juliet Stevenson narrates the audio, and she‘s one of the very best.

What a charming chaser to Sense and Sensibility. The author, who obviously did her research, really brought Jane Austen and her sister Cassandra to life, along with their large extended family. Set in 1840 when Cassy is a comparatively old woman visiting her childhood home and finding old family letters, the book also depicts a lot of what happened from 1795 to 1817. Any Austen fan will enjoy this quiet homage to Jane and her beloved sister.

I don‘t know if I‘ll ever tire of reading the many different interpretations of Jane Austen‘s relationship with her sister, how her one night engagement happened & ended, or why she never married. And I still always cringe at the thought of her letters being burned. I enjoyed this overall but I picked it up at the wrong time. I should have waited until I was actually in the mood for it & not on some schedule I made for myself 🤷🏻‍♀️
