Ch. 43/44: To Pemberly, therefore, they went and the housekeeper raves about Darcy, singing his praises like she's in church. Suddenly the man himself appears and Lizzy is *mortified*. But he's...chill about it? And also civil and solicitous and generous, and he wants Lizzy to meet Georgiana?!?! Lizzy can't make sense of it, and the next day he does show up with Georgie in tow, offering more kindness and a dinner invitation. Could it be...love?

eeclayton I love how Austen implies that it's pretty obvious to everyone but Elizabeth 😁 10h
Andrea313 @eeclayton Exactly! I love that the Gardiners immediately know what's up. 10h

"To Pemberly, therefore, they were to go."

Is there any better cliffhanger?! The excitement always rushes up for me at this moment; this line, placed on its own after all the conversation and activity of the last two chapters, sets the stage with so much anticipation. I don't care if it's hyperbole, I still find it thrilling. #PemberLittens #JaneAustenThenAndNow

Crinoline_Laphroaig PEMBERLEY!!! Whenever I get to this line, it's times to binge read. 3d

I‘m finally joining in! 🥳 It‘s 3 months into #JaneAustenThenAndNow but I couldn‘t pass up on an opportunity to read P&P with fellow Janeites!! It‘s SUCH a good story, I‘ve re-read it countless times. Watched the movie / TV adaptations, everything.
(Strangely, it‘s still not my favorite Austen - Persuasion is ☺️)
I‘m only at chapter 12 & am already as enamored and enchanted as ever. And I think I‘ll catch up pretty quickly, it‘s so good. Hurrah 😊

Crinoline_Laphroaig P and P always makes me happy! 3d

Ch.37-40: OK, I know this meme is about shit that went down several chapters ago but it's just too good! Plus, much of the action since has centered on the fallout: how Elizabeth reconciles Darcy's side of the story, how and when she tells Jane about it, and how it affects her conduct with Wickham when they inevitably meet again. Also, Lydia is on a tear about how badly she wishes she could follow the regiment to Brighton (foreshadowing!).

bookandbedandtea 😂 Excellent meme! 4d
Andrea313 @bookandbedandtea Honestly, God bless the internet (sometimes). 😂 4d
bookandbedandtea @Andrea313 Sometimes is right! 😒 But this is one of those times. 3d

Ch.35/36: A letter from Darcy to Elizabeth! He comes clean about his role in the Bingley/Jane affair and gives the other side of the story on Wickham- and it's *full* of high drama. Lizzy is reeling upon reading Darcy's side of things but admits to herself that she was wrong on both counts. Here's my question for you, #PemberLittens: now that the Wickham backstory has come out, who do you think is the worse Austen rogue- Wickham or Willoughby?

bookandbedandtea I don't like the idea of giving Willoughby any credit but I do think Wickham is worse. He goes from one *very* young lady to another, attempting to get control of their money. (I know they were considered (just) old enough to marry but, as a pattern, it's icky. And he doesn't seem to try to hide it. When he turns his attentions to Miss King, Lizzy is aware that it's all about her money & doesn't seem too bothered. Which has always bothered me. 6d
Crinoline_Laphroaig I always lean towards Willoughby as worse because he left a young woman pregnant. Although I'm sure Wickham would have done that as well. 5d
Andrea313 @Crinoline_Laphroaig I agree that Willoughby is worse. He not only seduced a young woman, he abandoned her in her pregnancy, too. But Wickham is vile, no doubt! Jane really gave us some noxious characters with these two, some top-tier fuckboys. 5d
bookandbedandtea @Andrea313 @Crinoline_Laphroaig I can't/ won't defend Willoughby as I think he's a terrible person who was selfish, thoughtless, and careless. But Wickham still seems worse to me because his actions towards various young ladies were premeditated and predatory. 3d

Ch. 33/34: After running into Darcy repeatedly during walks at Rosings, Lizzy finally runs into Col. Fitzwilliam instead. He brags about Darcy having saved a friend (Bingley) from a marriage to some trash lady (Jane), and Elizabeth is rightfully incensed. Then Darcy barges in with one of the worst proposals ever written. Every time I read it, I marvel that he ever redeems himself because this proposal is St-John-from-Jane-Eyre levels of offensive.

Caught the last half of the Greer Garson P&P (at a weird angle from across the room), which I had never seen before. Was utterly distracted by the women's dresses. They were HUGE & not remotely appropriate to the time period. From what I saw of it, it seems more "based on the book" rather than a faithful representation- & Austen's claws had been sheathed- but it made me curious to watch again & try to catch the whole thing. #JaneAustenThenAndNow

rubyslippersreads I think MGM saved money by reusing costumes from other movies. 😁 ❤️ Edna May Oliver as Lady Catherine. 1w
Leftcoastzen That‘s the thing I dislike about some of the older films , it‘s like they thought an old dress is an old dress , not really researched to the appropriate era . 1w
Ruthiella There‘s an archery scene in this, right? Taken from Emma… so a very loose adaptation. 1w

BarbaraJean At first glance, I thought this must be Gone with the Wind 😆 1w
bookandbedandtea @rubyslippersreads That's the feeling I had; that they were reusing costumes. Because, not only were the dresses wrong for the period, they didn't necessarily go with each other in the same scene, if that makes sense. They were different styles even from each other. As @Leftcoastzen mentioned, not just any old dress will do. 😆 7d
bookandbedandtea @Ruthiella I did not see an archery scene, I only saw (probably less than) the last half. I'll have to make a point of watching it for real sometime. 7d
bookandbedandtea @BarbaraJean Yes, it had a very Gone With The Wind vibe! 🫣 7d

Ch.31/32: One of my favorite chapters ever! Lizzy is full of mouthy snark and dishes it out to Darcy- calling him out on his anti-social behavior and refusing to be intimidated by his grand manner. We get the quote that appears on all the t-shirts and totes and pins and artful prints, and deservedly! What a fucking banger. Then Darcy starts his weird routine of coming over every day with absolutely nothing to say, leaving the ladies like "wtf?".

Crinoline_Laphroaig And when he picks up newspaper, like he's going to read it. 🤣 1w
