Atonement
Atonement | Ian McEwan
From the Booker Prize winning author of Amsterdam, a brilliant new novel. On the hottest day of the summer of 1935, thirteen-year-old Briony Tallis sees her sister Cecilia strip off her clothes and plunge into the fountain in the garden of their country house. Watching her is Robbie Turner, son of the Tallis’s cleaning lady, whose education has been subsidized by Cecilia’s and Briony’s father, and who, like Cecilia, has recently come down from Cambridge. By day's end, their lives will be changed – irrevocably. Robbie and Cecilia will have crossed a boundary they had not imagined at its start. And Briony will have witnessed mysteries, seen an unspeakable word, and committed a crime for which she will spend the rest of her life trying to atone…Brilliant and utterly enthralling in its depiction of love and war and class and childhood and England, An Atonement is a profound – and profoundly moving – exploration of shame and forgiveness, of atonement and of the possibility of absolution. From the Hardcover edition.

I read and listened to some good books this month. I listened to a lot of audio and included both nonfiction and 1001 list books. 📚 However, all of these books were borrowed (1 from a friend and 10 from the library), so I didn‘t read any of my own Mt. TBR books. Oops! 😬

What. A. Depressing. Story. I started off HATING Briony and at the end.... just felt sad for her. I liked how McEwan wrote the story but I turned that last page just feeling sad.

MY book club pick for March. My genre was tragedy and I had to google a list of fitting novels because all I could think of was Romeo and Juliet! But I‘ve owned this for a while and was glad it fit the bill so I could eat it up. And eat it up I did. I‘m the first one to finish our book club pick this month (which never happens) 💔

Ian McEwan is a brilliant writer! This is a sad book really and at times I felt angry at the events that occurred and wanted it to be different. The war scenes kept me engaged which is amazing because I do not like reading about war. There are some important messages here and I highly recommend it #literature #fiction #travelbook

The #MarchHare behaves in an unpredictable way.

The #CharactersLikeAlice I chose today, may not be as mad as a march hare, but the stories she spun that got the whole plot in motion, with all its twists and turns, including that (to me) unpredictable twist at the end... So, Briony it had to be.

I saw the film and tried to read this twice before and just didn't get it, which just goes to show that sometimes there's the right time for a book and for me, that time was now.
I really appreciated the writing and the thought provoking topics. The characters aren't particularly likeable, but that's ok - sometimes people in real life aren't particularly likeable. This was my first Ian McEwan and I'm excited to read more of his books.

Hephz I read this a while ago and it doesn‘t stand out in comparison to some of his others - perhaps because the others have some seriously dark themes and events that stick with you! Enduring Love was one I liked years ago, although not sure I would feel the same re-reading it now. Interested to hear your thoughts on any others. 12mo
