In a world of danger and deception, she walks the line--between seductive passion and scandalous murder...Eve Dallas is a New York police lieutenant hunting for a ruthless killer. In over ten years on the force, she's seen it all--and knows her survival depends on her instincts. And she's going against every warning telling her not to get involved with Roarke, an Irish billionaire--and a suspect in Eve's murder investigation. But passion and seduction have rules of their own, and it's up to Eve to take a chance in the arms of a man she knows nothing about--except the addictive hunger of needing his touch.

#ReadAway2024 #SeriesLove2024 #InDeathLongReadalong #IDLR I like the mystery, the aspect of the police procedural of one possible future. I like Eve Dallas, Feeney, and their commander. I like Galahad the cat. I dislike the villains, which, of course, I was meant to do. I don‘t think of the woman who made a pie with arsenic and told her husband not to eat it a villain. There is such a thing as justifiable homicide. I did not like (cont)⬇️

CatLass007 gazillionaire Roarke (just one name, like Cher and Madonna). I think he is rude, overbearing, and presumptuous. I don‘t believe the romance between Eve and Roarke. I‘ve never been physically or sexually abused so I have no personal knowledge about such things. But I feel that a woman with Eve‘s background, no matter how much she denies and tries to suppress the memories, would allow Roarke to manhandle her the way he does. Not right off (cont)⬇️ 3mo
CatLass007 the bat. Recovering from her abusive history takes a lifetime. Trust has to be built slowly and is rarely given. I do have a history of emotional abuse so I know about trust issues. Eve is not stupid enough or naive enough to jump into the relationship feet first. At the end, after she‘s been given pain meds she gets a little loopy and tells him that he‘s cute and has great hair. That was kind of funny and I think that would have been a (cont)⬇️ 3mo
CatLass007 better time for their relationship to start to bloom. It happened too quickly and was not realistic. So, because I liked most aspects of the book, I‘m giving it a pick. I‘ll continue the #InDeathLongReadalong. For now. 3mo

LiseWorks @CatLass007 I have been reading this series for a long time now, with book 56 next, and I loved the way the two main characters meet and fall for each other. I have never been in an abusive relationship, so I have no idea if Eve let Roarke in too early. I do know that later in the series, she gives as good as she gets. It is not a fake Romance to me. These two characters have a lot of baggage, and they fit each other and save each other's lives 👇 3mo
LiseWorks @CatLass007 along the way.As you continue to read the series, you will learn Eve s little quirks and see how funny and soft hearted she is with that hard exterior she puts out for other people, especially her co workers. You will also learn about Roarks' past and why you may believe he is overbearing. Eve does soften him a bit.Rude, I never saw him that way.He knows exactly how to give Eve what she needs. I hope you continue the series with us. 3mo
CatLass007 @LiseWorks I‘ve known people who have been abused. I have a dear friend who is now retired from being a therapist, but I‘ve heard about the lives some of her patients have lived. I have been told more than once that I am in the minority in never having been abused. My friend the therapist is not one of the people who told me that. I take the word of those who are more expert than I am about it that it is true. So I consider myself (cont)⬇️ (edited) 3mo
CatLass007 @LiseWorks blessed. You also are blessed. I do believe in love at first sight, so that isn‘t part of the problem. He‘s really rough with her and I would never allow a man to treat me that way. I suspect that it‘s because of her history that Eve allows it. She doesn‘t have enough self-esteem to stop him from treating her that way. She seems like she‘s in control, and that‘s true for her as a detective, but she doesn‘t know how to protect her heart 3mo
CatLass007 @LiseWorks I do plan to continue the #IDLR for as long as I enjoy the stories. If I want to continue with the buddy read I‘ll have to figure out how to process the way I feel about Roarke. 3mo

This was our first #BuddyRead #InDeathLongReadathon. I had read this previously in 2016 and loved it. It was so much fun to revisit these characters. Can't wait for the second one Glory in Death. I got a bingo spot in the #ISpyBingoJanuary and it qualifies for a few #Reathatons. Thank you @StayCurious for co hosting with me. I appreciate all the work you do.

#IDLR #InDeathLongReadalong Ch.20: What a fight and what a way to end the book! Eve and Roarke have started something and we‘ll see where it goes in future books. As for the Deblass case - it was a tough one that opened up wounds old and new. Eve took it to heart and saw it through. We‘ll see that she takes each case to heart because that‘s just who she is. Who will she meet along the way? Stay tuned! ⬇️

StayCurious Overall I enjoyed this first intro to Eve and Roarke and the New York of the future. It‘s dark, gritty, and can be hard to handle, but it can also be funny and full of heart. Join us when we read the second book in the series in February. We‘re thinking of doing just a weekly check in so people can read more at their own pace. Let us know what you prefer. 3mo
Librarybelle I‘m good with whatever everyone wishes to do! 3mo

TheAromaofBooks I'll probably read the next book a chapter a day just because that fits well with the other reading I'm doing, but I'm fine with however often checking in works for you. I'm looking forward to seeing how things develop in book 2!! 3mo
CatLass007 I generally read an entire book at once. I find it difficult to focus when I‘m reading several books at the same time at a chapter a day. I know you host several different buddy reads @StayCurious and I‘m so impressed that you do so much for each book. If you want to do daily check-ins or weekly check-ins, you should do what feels comfortable for you. I‘m on #TeamRenee! 3mo
willaful Weekly check in. ✓

I didn't love this as much as the first time round, probably because I've read a lot more and am more sensitive to certain things. But I still love Eve's character and I especially love when she has a moment of vulnerability and lets things spill, as she does at the end here. We'll get to my very favorite moment in Ceremony in Death. 😍

I'm currently reading a Murderbot book and it and Eve have a lot in common!
3mo
ShananigansReads I really enjoyed this book. I‘m fine with whichever way we do the check-ins. 3mo
LiseWorks I loved when Eve told Roarke he was pretty. Thanks to my coHost @StayCurious #TeamRenee. We will see you in Feb with the second in this series. 3mo

Why has it taken me this long to read this???

I greatly enjoyed this first in the In Death series. Eve is a flawed character, who has amazing intuition and is very methodical in her thinking. I‘m anxious to see how she develops over the course of this #InDeathLongReadalong . Roarke is interesting; some of his actions towards Eve made me frown, but he‘s also flawed.

I‘m ready for book two!

LiseWorks Oh good, I am so glad you liked this. Will definitely see you for book 2. 3mo

#IDLR #InDeathLongReadalong Ch.18-19: Eve learns of the horrible things that happened in the Deblass family, things that mirror what happened to Eve in some ways. The senator‘s daughter reveals what went on behind closed doors to both her and Sharon. It‘s enough to allow Eve to arrest the hypocritical old man. Afterwards, Eve reveals a bit about her past to Roarke and is able to lean on him for a bit. ⬇️

StayCurious Later, after a rough interrogation stirs up the senators health problems, he‘s released and given a reprieve for a few days. Beyond pissed, Eve goes to Roarkes but instead finds the sour old butler, who basically calls her a mongrel. Annoyed, and even a bit hurt, Eve takes the cat and storms home. And Rockman, the old man‘s assistant, is waiting for Eve at her apartment, ready to add her to the list of victims. Final chapter tomorrow! 3mo

Mehso-so

I liked the concept and some of the characters, but this was overall a so-so read for me. The Evil Conservative trope got really old. And I just wasn't a fan of the way some of the storyline played out. I'm still planning to read the second book on the strength of how well I like Roberts's other writing, but we'll see how that books goes before I decide if I'm going to wade through the whole series.

TheAromaofBooks Thanks for hosting #IDLR @StayCurious @LiseWorks !! I've had these books on my TBR forever, so I'm honestly super glad for the nudge to pick them up!!

Together they hack into the chief‘s files and find some discrepancies that they pass on to the reporter, Nadine. Eve feels bad about crossing the line, but she‘s also grateful that she had Roarke to turn to in order to get things done. Also, we catch a glimpse of Eve‘s past when she has a nightmare

#InDeathLongReadalong #IDLR Sorry for the late post! Ch.11. Eve‘s butt is on the line. Her career is at risk, almost as much as her heart is. She could be hung out to dry, and if she goes down, Feeney and her commander could suffer as well. Who is keeping tabs on her? How‘d they know where she spent the night? And why do the higher ups want a cover up? Political gain and financial benefits are at play here. ⬇️

StayCurious Sure the senator could benefit politically but is there someone else? Just who do we think was being blackmailed by Sharon? And how does Lola Starr fit in? Ch. 12: we meet the intrepid reporter Nadine Furst who wants the big story and is willing to work with Eve to get it. Nadine is tough and credible, with both a brain and a heart. We‘ll see more of her for sure.👇 (edited) 3mo

StayCurious She‘s been drawn to Roarke since the beginning but this could prove detrimental to her case. Not that we still think of him as a suspect. But the senator could use this against her and try to take her down. Could Roarke be right? Could the senator want to use his granddaughters tragedy for his own political gain? TheAromaofBooks From experience, I know that there don't always have to be real reasons to cut off family - just perceived ones. IndoorDame It‘s telling and really sad that she says there‘s no one else. IRL if a man I barely know has broken into my apartment when I‘m not home, he‘s the last person I‘m opening up to… but I‘m up for lots of things in stories that I wouldn‘t buy into in life, and if she doesn‘t have friends to go to I‘m glad she‘s comfortable opening up to him rather than retreating further into herself. 3mo
willaful I'm not sure I noticed on first read the uncomfortable parallels between the murderer letting himself in and Roarke letting himself in. 😳 😬 Also, how is she still in that apartment?! 3mo
MrsV Yeah, I‘m so not behind Roark just letting himself into her apartment whenever he wants. Especially knowing how on edge she is with her current case. 3mo

#InDeathLongReadalong #IDLR Ch.6: another murder and how long before the next? We see how Eve as a person gets upset over how young the second victim was. She might be a bad ass cop but she is also vulnerable and human. Eve goes to Roarke and they exchange heated words. She admits that she doesn‘t think it was him but he still has to remain a suspect - despite her feelings. Roarke shows that he‘s starting to care for her as well ⬇️

StayCurious He wants to see her again. He‘s bold and upfront about why. And he says he can help her in her investigation. But can she accept that help knowing who it‘s from? Does he have ulterior motives? 3mo
Librarybelle So good! 3mo
See All 13 Comments
IndoorDame Being confronted with men‘s attitudes from the 90s irks me (even more than it did back in the 90s). I already see why Roarke is attractive to her, but I‘m not sure I could get past the fact that she‘s meeting him in a professional capacity where he should be deferring to her and he can‘t stop touching her, and acting controlling and domineering. 3mo
LiseWorks @IndoorDame how funny as I don't see Roarke that way at all. I see a kind man who cares for this woman. A little touch on the cheek is exactly what this woman needs. She may look and act tough, but she is vulnerable, and Roarke sees that. I do not see him domineering over her as much as trying to help her see herself as vulnerable and admitting she needs help. 3mo
StayCurious @LiseWorks @IndoorDame it might be a bit old fashioned - I will admit to that. But call me an old fashioned girl lol because I think I‘m here for it 💜 But I recognize it‘s not everyone‘s idea of romance. I do think as the series goes on, they build up each others‘ strengths 3mo
IndoorDame @LiseWorks super interesting that our reactions were so different. I expect your read is exactly what the author was going for. 3mo
LiseWorks @StayCurious I totally agree, they do build each other's strengths over time. And I'm old fashion too. Lol 3mo
IndoorDame @StayCurious it‘s early, I‘m still willing to be convinced as I see more of them together. But this was one of the first gene romance (and mystery) series I got into, so it‘ll definitely be interesting to see if my attitude evolves as the book continues or if my take on the relationship has just changed drastically in the last few decades 3mo
StayCurious @IndoorDame it‘s so interesting when you reread a book how your opinions can change. I‘ve found that a few times before. We‘ll have to remember that this book is 30 years old and may have some things that could be a bit off putting to some. 3mo
StayCurious @LiseWorks stick me in a cave and call me Wilma haha 3mo
IndoorDame @StayCurious and I actually read them when they were first being published (or close to) and when I was extremely young, so it would make sense on both counts for my opinion to have evolved more than many of your readers 3mo
willaful @IndoorDame Back when long romance blog discussions were still a thing, exactly this topic used to come up all the time! I'm not sure I'll feel quite the same now that I'm older and wiser, either. 3mo

I saw that a group here was reading this series. I read these, maybe the first 15 or so, years ago, back in the 90‘s and loved them. Thought I‘d reread the first one so I listened to this today. I love a mystery series, and this one is wonderful - takes place in the future and has a bit of romance as well as a great mystery. I may have to continue this series!

StayCurious You‘re more than welcome to join in on our discussions! 3mo

#InDeathLongReadalong #IDLR Ch.5: When all you want is a candy bar and instead you walk in on a robbery. This scene does a great job of showing how badass Eve really is. After such a tough day, Eve, despite protestations, can‘t deny herself a swanky steak dinner and she has dinner with Roarke. And more - a quick but steamy kiss that goes way against her rules.

StayCurious She just can‘t help herself around him. But she may have to - because there‘s been another murder. And he‘s still her prime suspect. We also meet the tight assed Somerset - how delightfully snooty, especially when he takes hold of Eve‘s coat with just two fingers and balks at giving her the “good” wine. 3mo
Librarybelle I‘m having such a hard time not reading ahead! 3mo

IndoorDame So amused by her comment that she‘s never seen a butler outside of old movies. Has anyone? Even in our time? I‘ve had the door opened by some nannies, maids, even a chef once… but definitely not a butler 😂 3mo
StayCurious @IndoorDame I do not run in Butler circles I‘m afraid 😄 3mo
majkia I'm still hanging in here. I almost DNF'd this because of Eve nearly having an orgasm just meeting Roark. Ugh. I hope this stays away from that sort of thing. Obviously I'm not a romance fan. 3mo
ShananigansReads @StayCurious 😂 😂 😂 I must find a way to work “butler circles“ in to everyday confersations.
@librarybelle Me too. I got caught up letting Alexa narrate the other day and next thing I know I'm at chapter 6 😬
3mo
LiseWorks Ah yes the good wine. That was quite the "are you sure "? Moment. Lol 3mo
willaful @majkia I'm afraid you're not going to enjoy the series much. :-( The romance continues to be heavily featured in them all.

I'm pretty sure I've never encountered a butler or maid. We're more the “cleaners in every every other week“ circles, if that!
3mo
StayCurious @majkia yes, the Eve/Roarke storyline features heavily. Nora Roberts always tends to feature romance in her work. 3mo

#InDeathLongReadalong #IDLR Ch.4: Eve tries to create a scenario in which Roarke is guilty, but she finds it difficult. He‘s certainly arrogant enough to have done it, then to sit with her and calmly drink coffee- but she can‘t make herself believe he‘s guilty. Still, she might suggest he get a psych evaluation - ha! Good luck with that, Eve. Will you return his coffee gift at the same time? Doubtful. (How romantic was that gift btw?) ⬇️

StayCurious We also meet Mavis, Eve‘s freewheeling best friend, who doesn‘t quite get the appeal of real coffee as a gift. And we unfortunately have another young prostitute killed. This scene with another murder was difficult. Nora does not make murder easy and getting into both victim and killer‘s head is rough. Based on this, do we suspect Roarke? Or perhaps the senator‘s slimy assistant? 3mo
IndoorDame I definitely don‘t see her returning the coffee, even though I assume there are regulations against that sort of thing… I remember some buzz when this was first written about how unethical and unsustainable our coffee and chocolate industries were and what that would mean long term. Sort of the way we‘re talking about beef now. I wonder if this was written today if he‘d be cooking for her with real meat? 3mo

LiseWorks @IndoorDame ha, you have no idea lol wait until the other books in the series. 3mo
TheAromaofBooks Quick question, are we going to be reading this series back-to-back, or will there be a gap between books? 3mo
ShananigansReads I kinda love Mavis. I hope we see more of her in this book. 3mo
willaful “Nora does not make murder easy and getting into both victim and killer‘s head is rough“

Yes. I had a really hard time with the last NR I read and some of the books in this series are truly painful. I really hate villain POV, especially when sex is involved. I don't want to be inside an evil person's head!
3mo
StayCurious @TheAromaofBooks our hope is to read one book a month. We will probably start mid month to give a brief break in between 3mo
StayCurious @willaful I have a hard time getting close to the victims too. 3mo
TheAromaofBooks Thank you!! 3mo
IndoorDame @LiseWorks 😂 I didn‘t have to wait long! You can see I have zero memories of the actual details of these books. Just a sense of the overall plot lines and a ness of the character relationships. 3mo

#InDeathLongReadalong #IDLR Ch.3: we finally meet Roarke and Eve falls for his coffee right away. And she is drawn to Roarke despite herself. But she knows that he is dangerous. And could be connected to her case more than he is letting on. Will his smooth talking abilities sway her? He is very precise when it comes to his alibi and frankly everything he says is smooth - he matches her word for word and she finds herself outmatched. ⬇️

StayCurious For now. He needs to be at the top of her suspect list which means keeping him at arms length. But how hard will that be? 3mo

#InDeathLongReadalong #IDLR @LiseWorks Ch.1: Right away we are pulled into the futuristic world through little details - like the mention of droids, an auto chef, air traffic, a Tele link, - remember this was written in the mid nineties before even cellphones were really popular and I think Nora does a good job of world building. As you read on in the series, these things become second nature. ⬇️

StayCurious We start to get a sense of Eve - her tough exterior, her quick mind, her bravery, her snarkiness. And we learn more about Sharon, our victim. 3mo
LiseWorks When I first started reading this series, I was reminded of the Jetsons with their technology. 3mo

IndoorDame @LiseWorks I first read this in the late 90s and it definitely felt like The Future. It‘ll be interesting to see how futuristic it feels now and how many things feel commonplace. We actually have some forms of the semi permanent makeup she imagined, though the current form lasts a lot longer, and of the voice activated breakfast prep she uses, though it‘s not ubiquitous enough to see an old model in a cop‘s kitchen… 3mo
willaful IIRC, their communication systems are pretty close. 3mo
LiseWorks @IndoorDame I looked back, and I read this book in 2016. So the lingo they use I'm familiar with, I like the idea of auto cheff lol 3mo
TheAromaofBooks I didn't realize that this series was set in the future!! It's fun to see what things she thought were futuristic when writing this 30 years ago! Great start, right into the action. We'll see how good I am at sticking with a chapter a day 😂 3mo
ShananigansReads I had no idea it was set in the future either but it hasn‘t thrown me for a loop at all. 3mo
MrsV I was aware that this is set in the future, but I didn‘t know the series was started back in nineties. I‘ve told my husband before that I‘m ready for the flying cars I was promised by this time growing up. And yes, @LiseWorks , I‘d like an auto cheff too. 3mo

I'm still feeling icky from covid but tired of comfort rereads so I figured I'd start something easily bingeable. I can see why this series is so popular. I liked Lt Dallas and her determination to get the job done. It was hard to remember that this was first written in 1995. It seemed to be eerily fitting to today's socio-political climate.

This is a good murder mystery that keeps you guessing, with a strong female protagonist. A detective investigates a series of murders of prostitutes. As she tries to work through a mess of politics to solve the case, she becomes involved with one of the main suspects, which is problematic for several reasons. Set slightly in the future but nothing too crazy except cars that can fly to get around traffic.

robinb Are you just starting with this series? If so, you‘ve got a lot to look forward to with Eve and Roarke if you stick with it. 😊 12mo
