Empire Falls
Empire Falls | Richard Russo
Richard Russofrom his first novel, Mohawk, to his most recent, Straight Manhas demonstrated a peerless affinity for the human tragicomedy, and with this stunning new novel he extends even further his claims on the small-town, blue-collar heart of the country.Dexter County, Maine, and specifically the town of Empire Falls, has seen better days, and for decades, in fact, only a succession from bad to worse. One by one, its logging and textile enterprises have gone belly-up, and the once vast holdings of the Whiting clan (presided over by the last scions widow) now mostly amount to decrepit real estate. The working classes, meanwhile, continue to eke out whatever meager promise isnt already boarded up.Miles Roby gazes over this ruined kingdom from the Empire Grill, an opportunity of his youth that has become the albatross of his daily and future life. Called back from college and set to work by family obligationshis mother ailing, his father a loose cannonMiles never left home again. Even so, his own obligations are manifold: a pending divorce; a troubled younger brother; and, not least, a peculiar partnership in the failing grill with none other than Mrs. Whiting. All of these, though, are offset by his daughter, Tick, whom he guides gently and proudly through the tribulations of adolescence.A decent man encircled by history and dreams, by echoing churches and abandoned mills, by the comforts and feuds provided by lifelong friends and neighbors, Miles is also a patient, knowing guide to the rich, hardscrabble nature of Empire Falls: fathers and sons and daughters, living and dead, rich and poor alike. Shot through with the mysteries of generations and the shattering visitations of the nation at large, it is a social novel of panoramic ambition, yet at the same time achingly personal. In the end, Empire Falls reveals our worst and best instincts, both our most appalling nightmares and our simplest hopes, with all the vision, grace and humanity of truly epic storytelling. From the Hardcover edition.

My first Richard Russo and what a treat. I loved getting lost in Empire Falls, a sleepy Maine town that felt authentic and honest. This book made me nostalgic for my youth, for Dairy Queen, for Friday night football games and hanging out at the Sherwood Diner. I loved the LARGE cast of characters with their interwoven storylines. A tad long, but still a quick read for almost 500 pages. Should provide a lively bookclub discussion.

Cinfhen @britt_brooke I know I recommended this book to you and I DO think you‘d LOVE the writing and setting but there is a major spoiler towards the end that I believe is a trigger for you. You may not want to read this book. It‘s only briefly discussed (less than a page) but I wanted to warn you 💚😘 (edited) 2y

My first Russo and it won't be my last. Engrossing, often very funny tale of ordinary lives in a small decaying Maine town. Miles Roby is a protagonist we root for, but it's his ne'er-do-well father Max who steals the show. Great read.

#BookClubBook for December 📚

This was a really good book!! I found out it's been made into a two part miniseries back in 2005 on HBO, and I'm very interested in watching it.
⭐⭐⭐⭐
I have to complain a bit about the super small print-especially when he flashbacks to the past and the small print gets even smaller when in italics. I'm not *that* old, but would of been SO much better if the print was larger.
Definitely would recommend. Great story

ItsAnotherJen Don't be put off by the first little bit. I started it several times thinking "what the hell is this" but after I got past that intro it got much much better ? 2y
ItsAnotherJen Eta- I watched the miniseries and Helen Hunt does amazing as the ex-wife. 2y

I first read this maybe 17 or 18 years ago and while I‘ve always considered it a favorite, remembered very little about it. I have been re-reading this slowly over the past few months with a group of my colleagues and remembering why I fell in love with it so many moons ago. Just a wonderfully rich, layered story of small town Maine and its inhabitants. Still a favorite. 5🌟

I really enjoyed getting chapters from the points of view of a number of central characters, as well as the flashbacks. It's a really good story, and it was a quick (as quick as 480 pages can be) read. Probably a little longer than it needed to be, but worth reading.

As always, Russo hits the perfect notes of humour and irony while weaving a tightly knit narrative filled with memorable characters, who are in equal parts slapdashedly funny and outlandishly exaggerated, but also true to essential human nature.

This Pulitzer winner is funny at times and tragic at others. It is a long audiobook, but the narrator is good and the story is good as well, so I never tired of the story. There‘s an HBO miniseries based on this book for those who prefer not to invest the time. I‘ll read more from this writer. Overall rating: 4.53 stars

I can see why this won the Pulitzer Prize. It was a fantastic, multi-generational story about a dying town & its eclectic community. The characters & the town were so vividly depicted that I felt like I was right there with them. And there were so many layers to both! In the hands of any other writer, it may not have worked. But Russo is master of his art & succeeded in creating a very rich literary experience. 5/5⭐️

Reviewsbylola I really want to read this. I enjoyed his memoir about his mother but I haven‘t read any of his other books. 5y

The problem with the contemplative life was that there was no end to contemplation, no fixed time limit after which thought had to be transformed into action. I'm not sure why I enjoyed this book so much. For the first 350 pages, nothing terribly exciting happens, and the ending left me with a lot of questions, but I still loved it. I think it was the characters. There are a lot of them, but they're all interesting. Perhaps because they're all so hopelessly flawed. Miles, Max, Tick, Janine, even Walt Comeau...I found myself emotionally invested in them all.
