#ThreeGenerations

Singout
Of Women and Salt | Gabriela Garcia
Pickpick

Excellent multi-generational book, starting with a 19C woman cigar roller and leftist husband, and focusing mainly on her g-g-granddaughter, an American drug addict wanting to reconnect with her estranged Cuban family. Focus is on the complexity of women in the same family with different views on tradition, identity, and migration, and a parallel story about Salvadoran women.

Librarybelle Good choice! 9mo
Singout The Salvadoran theme was also very powerful: a woman who has been taken away by ICE and whose seven-year-old daughter is initially taken in by the main character, who reluctantly turns her in to a government institution that sent her with her mother back to Mexico, ignoring the fact that they are actually Salvadorans. The same narrative of desperately trying to escape to the new United States, that I‘ve been reading in other books ensues. (edited) 9mo
Cinfhen Excellent choice - I read this too but wish the flow of the interconnected stories might have been better structured/ the time jumps were very difficult to follow 🤷🏼‍♀️ 9mo
TheAromaofBooks Great progress!!! 9mo

I think these need to be palate cleansers or books to get me out of a slump, as I could see various plot points coming after having recently read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. Still enjoyed it!

GRAVE EXPECTATIONS. | ALICE. BELL

Mehso-so

I really liked the concept and the first few chapters. When the hunt for the murderer starts in earnest though, it seems that the mystery takes a back-burner. We get lots of scenes between the characters getting to know each other and doing mundane things. This slowed down the pace of the book for me.

#ARC #MountARC #NetGalley

#Booked2023 #ThreeGenerations (actually four generations)
@alisiakae @BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen

⬇️

julesG The pop-culture references and dialogues seemed to be targeted at an audience that is younger than 40 years of age. I'm not saying people over 40 might not enjoy the book, but the dialogues might grate a bit.

The protagonists have to work for the clues, they don't fall out of the sky, and the characters get some things wrong and blunder several interviews with suspects. This made the murder mystery part of the story much more realistic.

Cinfhen Yay!!!! That‘s fantastic!!!! 1y
CBee @Cinfhen I meant to mention in my review - my heart about burst because the elderly character said “Cokecola” and my dad ALWAYS said it like that ♥️♥️♥️ 1y
peaKnit She is one of my favorite authors, welcome to the fan club ☺️ 1y
Librariana Aawww! I love that your first read of 2023 gave you the warm fuzzies! Allen is an author that keeps popping up in my searches of recommendations for titles with touches of magic. I've not read anything by her, but I do hope to pick something up in the future 😁☺️😊 1y
CBee @peaknit 😊😊 Awesome! She‘s definitely one I might not have heard about if not for Litsy! 1y
CBee @Librariana I think you‘d enjoy this then! I have another book of hers as well that I can‘t wait to read now 1y
Librariana @CBee Wait!! I think I have that one, too!! I think I bought it on a whim because I had seen reviews on Publishers Weekly... and I might've been the one who added it to the District's catalog! 😳😳😳 1y
Cinfhen Awwww!! I love little quirks like that, that make a book so special ♥️ 1y
CBee @Librariana it was a BOTM choice a few months back, too! Also - not sure how you feel about this, but I love to share books, especially ones I love, so I‘d be happy to send Garden Spells to you! Let me know 😊 1y

A light-hearted story about 2 grown-up sisters, one sister‘s sensitive son, and their aging advice-columnist mother as all their relationships with their significant others implode simultaneously. The banter between the family is witty, and it‘s a warm, lovable family unit. But the startup/influencer storyline felt a little forced. It gave me Elin Hildebrand vibes with an NYC edge…. Fun, fluffy but a bit forgettable… a light 3⭐️pick.

KarenUK And finally, I feel I have to do the first Barnes & Noble 52 book challenge! #BN2023challenge #anauthoryouvenotheardofbefore I really managed a #quadripledip !!!! 🍦🍦🍦🍦 1y
Cinfhen Wait? What?!?! B& N is doing a challenge?! Fun 🤩 (edited) 1y
squirrelbrain Yay for the quadruple dip! I just did one too. But, la, la, la I don‘t want to hear about any more challenges… 🙉 1y
KarenUK Yep! @Cinfhen @squirrelbrain They posted it a couple of days ago on Instagram, so I kind of have to do it! Luckily I‘ll be able to double/triple dip a lot!!! 😉 https://www.instagram.com/p/CmwLXnnuyMC/?igshid=Zjc2ZTc4Nzk= 1y
Cinfhen I was tempted @squirrelbrain but I‘m holding back… 1y
Cinfhen Congrats on the #quadruple 🙌🏻🎉💖 1y
squirrelbrain Oh dear, I don‘t have Insta so I can‘t see it properly… phew! 😮‍💨 1y
BarbaraBB I had no idea so many people participated in #52bookclub23! I have to make a taglist! For #pop23 you can add (as far as I know) @AshleyHoss820 @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick and @RaeLovesToRead 1y
AshleyHoss820 @KarenUK I saw their instagram post and decided to give that one a go too! They have some good prompts! 1y
KarenUK @AshleyHoss820 Nice to have a challenge buddy! 👍💕 1y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I am focusing on #Booked2023 & #52BookClub23 this year (I get lazy & just use #52books) but am also trying to see how far I can get with #pop23, read harder, b & n, and maybe one or two others. Someone on instagram released a We Didn't Start the Fire challenge with 132 prompts. I might count one book for multiple prompts on that one & track just for fun. It's a fun addiction. 1y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @BarbaraBB ☝️See above comment. I accidentally removed your tag. 1y
BarbaraBB So many challenges! I am over my head into challenges as well. Not sure where I‘ll end up with #pop23, doing #booked2023 and #52books as well. And now I must check out the big one on Instagram as well 🤷🏻‍♀️😂 @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick (edited) 1y

#52booksin52weeks2023 @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB

This is what I have planned for the prompts released!

• Set in Dublin
• Books on the cover
• Related to the word 'Murder'

and, not featured because they're books I need to get:
• Octavia E Butler-inspired.

Cinfhen 84 Charing Cross Road was SO GOOD!!! For books on cover im planning on this one 1y
Cinfhen And for Dublin im planning on this one, which I think will work as a #DoubleDip #ThreeGenerations 1y
Deblovestoread Do I need another challenge…probably not. Am I curious about #52booksin52weeks….yes, I am. Do tell….😀 1y

jenniferw88 @Deblovestoread from the website: 52 Books in 52 Weeks is an annual challenge made up of 52 unique prompts. Match one book to each prompt for a total of 52 books throughout the year. The goal is to try new authors or genres, push ourselves to read more, read differently, and most importantly… to have fun! ⬇️ 1y
jenniferw88 @Deblovestoread and here's the link to this year's challenge if you want to look at examples of prompts: https://www.the52book.club/2022-reading-challenge/ 1y
Deblovestoread Thank you! 1y
BarbaraBB How do you know about prompts released yet?? So exciting! 1y
jenniferw88 @BarbaraBB members of the fb and goodreads group/instagram fans voted for 1 a week during October and the results were revealed at the end of the month. If you sign up for the emails they will notify you next year. 1y
BarbaraBB Thanks I will. And I love these three prompts! 1y
jenniferw88 @BarbaraBB you've missed the 'Octavia E Butler inspired' one! 😂 (as I haven't got any books for that one yet 😉). I'm thinking of using the #independentwomen buddy read book for that one! 1y

Patrick Keefe definitely deserves the Pulitzer for his extensive research and superbly written investigative story of the Sackler Family. I‘m just amazed by all the material presented in this narrative nonfiction that reads like a novel but unfortunately is factual. It‘s beyond imaginable the amount of wealth the family accumulated from shady business practices that would eventually become the worse epidemic engineered by man & greed. 👇🏼

Cinfhen If you enjoyed Bad Blood and Hidden Valley Road this is a book you don‘t want to miss. It was hard to put down. Perfect for bookclub discussion. 3y

TrishB I think I may actually read this one! 3y
Kalalalatja I really liked Bad Blood, so I‘ll keep my eye out for this! 3y
alisiakae I definitely want to read this! I just have a really hard time picking up books that relate to the opiate epidemic. And May 31 is the 12 yr anniversary of my bmom ODing on opiates. 😞 I still have this one unread on my shelf: 3y
Verity I‘m in the hold queue for this at the library and very impatient 3y
Verity @4thhouseontheleft I‘m so sorry you and your family have been through that. 3y
Cinfhen I understand @4thhouseontheleft this book will definitely make your blood boil 🤬😥 3y
Cinfhen Even if you don‘t read much NF this reads like fiction and I think you‘ll both find it fascinating @TrishB @Kalalalatja 3y
Cinfhen Thank you @Verity I‘m actually in a much better situation than those people living in the southern cities😔praying for a speedy resolution for everyone in the upcoming days🙏🏼 3y

I‘m LOVING this #ARC #NetGalley as someone who “summered” in the Catskills this book is bringing back all sorts of childhood memories 🥰 This works for #Booked2021 #JewishMCauthor and #Pop21 #ThreeGenerations It‘s also a big fun throwback to Dirty Dancing 💃🏾 🕺🏾🍉

Kimberlone Have you watched The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel? The most recent season also featured a summer long excursion to a Dirty Dancing esque camp in the Catskills! 3y
