Poignant story of four..well, I wouldn‘t call them friends...connected through their music and followed throughout their lives to see if they can change or grow or escape their backgrounds. A little glimpse into the world of classical music artists. Reminded me of The Interestings and A Little Life (but not depressing).

🌟January books! 🌟 So this is a much smaller number than usual as I kept to some New Years resolutions! 1) Only one book at a time and 2) Only real copies, no e-books. It was great - I read slower, enjoyed more, and didn‘t feel pressure to keep up or lose attention span. Winner of the month: ☝🏼Absalom! Absalom!

This book should have been up my alley - my lists are full of terrible things happening to good people. But this wasn‘t trying to say anything- it was disturbing and graphic simply for the sake of being disturbing and graphic, without any redemption or bigger ideas.
And to be picky about the writing style, I couldn‘t get a mental picture of the garden‘s spatial layout the way it was described.
I would pass on this one.

Has anyone read this? My work book club voted for this one (full disclosure: I voted against it because not a sci-fi/fantasy fan). Is it still worth it?

Karkar It is a different book. I like this book the best out of the series. I think you will know fairly quickly into the book if it is a book you are going to want to read. 2y
manifestsanity It's phenomenal and a quick read. Loved it. 2y
RanaElizabeth I think it was great but in all fairness, love sci fi and fantasy. I think you'll do okay just try to not figure things out, just let the story play out and understand that it's supposed to be weird and confusing. 2y

Thndrstd Agree with everyone. Fun quick and creepy read that should spawn good discussion 2y
Aninski I just finished this book today and I couldn't put it down! The only thing I found a bit annoying is that you don't really get any answers in this one, just more and more questions... you'll have to read the trilogy if you want to understand anything at all! (edited) 2y

I am not a short story fan at all but this came highly recommended so I tried it and - I absolutely could not stop reading or thinking about it. Each story kept my interest, was complete without being too tidy, and had a cohesive message and themes throughout. The author's voice and story are so unique and need to be heard.

KathyWheeler Just my opinion, but to me the short story is much harder to do well than the novel; that's why there are so many bad ones out there. A well-crafted short story can be a revelation. Glad you found some you liked. 3y
KatrinaRose @KathyWheeler I think I agree with you, even when an author does both short stories and novels, I always prefer the novels. 3y
