My Green Green Grass | Linnet Brown

It's not really very green, since the pictures were taken in the Fall, but it is my home from about the age of 9 until I left for college.

Cinfhen There‘s no place like home ❤️ 6mo
BarbaraBB It looks fab, where is it? 6mo

RamsFan1963 @BarbaraBB It's back in the mountains of southwestern Virginia, about 45 minutes from the Virginia/Tennessee state line. It was as country as you can get, the road I lived on was called Gravel Lick Road 🤣🤣🤣 6mo
BarbaraBB To me it looks gorgeous and nostalgic! I believe you about being that #smalltownboy 😉 (edited) 6mo
RamsFan1963 @BarbaraBB Don't get me wrong, I love my home town, tiny as it was, but sooner or later I had to leave to see more of the world. It's sadly true you can't go home again, I go home when I can and it's never the same. 6mo
BarbaraBB Things pass, it‘s sad sometimes. Good memories though! 6mo

Cinfhen Thanks for asking!!!! He‘s home, some improvement. Dr‘s are stumped and have ordered more lab work. He‘s now able to keep liquids down so they were able to discharge him with some caveats. 6mo
Chrissyreadit @Cinfhen hoping for continued steady improvement. 6mo
Cinfhen Thanks so much xx appreciate the well wishes 💖 6mo

We can beef over whether Honolulu & Waikiki can be considered small towns in the 1890s when Duke Kahanamoku was a #smalltownboy but this Hawaiian Olympic swimmer, surfer, & official waterman certainly made good. He was known as the ambassador of Aloha & had an interesting life being born before the overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy & its eventual Statehood. Statues, a stamp & hobnobbing with celebrities. This book is on my #TBR.🍍

Cinfhen Soooooo happy to have your collages back❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️I‘ve missed them and you 😘😘 6mo
DebinHawaii @Cinfhen I've missed you too and missed doing them. You may not get my posts until late in the evening here on the day, but so far I'm 5 for 5! 😉😆So glad you have your hubby at home now! (edited) 6mo

“Lilacs on a bush are better than orchids. And dandelions and devil grass are better! Why? Because they bend you over and turn you away from all the people and the town for a little while and sweat you and get you down where you remember you got a nose again....Gardening is the handiest excuse for being a philosopher.”

Gino Bartali, a small town Italian boy, won the Tour de France twice (holding the record for the longest time span between wins) and secretly aided the Italian Resistance during WWII by smuggling documents in his bicycle‘s frame and sheltering a Jewish family.

I‘m currently reading this for my IRL book club. 😀

Pickpick

Jefferson grew up as a fairly typical #smalltownboy in the black community of Bayonne, Louisiana in the 30s and 40s: poor, little education, & hard labor on the farm. At 21, he is wrongly convicted of murder, and his godmother recruits her friend's teacher-nephew to teach him how to be a man before he faces death after a lifetime of injustice. What ensues is powerful and multi-layered: I think I'm still unpacking a lot of its implications.

JennyM That sounds a heavy but important read 6mo
BarbaraBB I loved this tragic book. 6mo

Billypar @JennyM @BarbaraBB Yes- heavy, important, and tragic are all great descriptions- this is one that will stick with me. 6mo
Cinfhen Sounds like a really powerful read. When was it written?? 6mo
gradcat Such a fantastic book—and author. ♥️ 6mo
Billypar @Cinfhen 1993. It has a timeless feel to it though, like it could have been written in any decade. 6mo
Billypar @gradcat I've heard a lot of praise for this novel, but not much about Gaines himself- I'll have to check out his other work. 6mo
gradcat @Billypar In my opinion, Haines has never written a bad book. But I tend to give Louisiana authors a lot of yardage, because I was born & raised here, and I know the kind of weird hold and, if I‘m honest, magic this state has on its denizens, and particularly on its writers. I love/hate this place, and I lived in loads of other, probably better places, and yet I always return. It‘s like a boomerang, this state.... 6mo
Cinfhen Interesting comments @gradcat certain places have their magnetic fields ~ you can‘t fight it 6mo
Billypar @gradcat I love it when books have the setting play an prominent role where you can tell it left a stamp on the author from living there. Absolutely agree @Cinfhen ! 6mo
gradcat @Cinfhen Agree 100 percent...it‘s not something one can explain, either. @Billypar I like most of the writers from my state...sometimes I think there‘s an otherworldliness about Louisiana geography, so the setting lends itself to the Southern gothic novel. 6mo
Suet624 I read this several years ago when my librarian had it on the Banned Books bookshelf. I had no idea this had been banned. A great novel. 5mo
Billypar @Suet624 Ugh- how terrible. This would be a great addition to a high school or college curriculum. 5mo

A cabin boy usually was a young lad, most likely hailing from a small town, of about twelve or so who would learn about sailing and eventually become an active member of the crew.

Cinfhen Wow!! Interesting 6mo
