We can beef over whether Honolulu & Waikiki can be considered small towns in the 1890s when Duke Kahanamoku was a #smalltownboy but this Hawaiian Olympic swimmer, surfer, & official waterman certainly made good. He was known as the ambassador of Aloha & had an interesting life being born before the overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy & its eventual Statehood. Statues, a stamp & hobnobbing with celebrities. This book is on my #TBR.🍍
“Lilacs on a bush are better than orchids. And dandelions and devil grass are better! Why? Because they bend you over and turn you away from all the people and the town for a little while and sweat you and get you down where you remember you got a nose again....Gardening is the handiest excuse for being a philosopher.”

Gino Bartali, a small town Italian boy, won the Tour de France twice (holding the record for the longest time span between wins) and secretly aided the Italian Resistance during WWII by smuggling documents in his bicycle‘s frame and sheltering a Jewish family.
I‘m currently reading this for my IRL book club. 😀
Jefferson grew up as a fairly typical #smalltownboy in the black community of Bayonne, Louisiana in the 30s and 40s: poor, little education, & hard labor on the farm. At 21, he is wrongly convicted of murder, and his godmother recruits her friend's teacher-nephew to teach him how to be a man before he faces death after a lifetime of injustice. What ensues is powerful and multi-layered: I think I'm still unpacking a lot of its implications.
Daltrey Ransome is just a #SmallTownBoy who made it big, and Daisy Harris is the best friend who misses him. They reconnect and spend their #SummerNights falling in love, and it all starts with one #hug. #romance #QuotsyJune19 #WanderingJune #SongsOfSummer
