The Magicians
The Magicians: A Novel | Lev Grossman
The New York Times bestselling novel about a young man practicing magic in the real world, now an original series on Syfy“The Magicians is to Harry Potter as a shot of Irish whiskey is to a glass of weak tea. . . . Hogwarts was never like this.” —George R.R. Martin   “Sad, hilarious, beautiful, and essential to anyone who cares about modern fantasy.” —Joe Hill   “A very knowing and wonderful take on the wizard school genre.” —John Green   “The Magicians may just be the most subversive, gripping and enchanting fantasy novel I’ve read this century.” —Cory Doctorow“This gripping novel draws on the conventions of contemporary and classic fantasy novels in order to upend them . . . an unexpectedly moving coming-of-age story.” —The New Yorker“The best urban fantasy in years.” —A.V. ClubQuentin Coldwater is brilliant but miserable. A high school math genius, he’s secretly fascinated with a series of children’s fantasy novels set in a magical land called Fillory, and real life is disappointing by comparison. When Quentin is unexpectedly admitted to an elite, secret college of magic, it looks like his wildest dreams have come true. But his newfound powers lead him down a rabbit hole of hedonism and disillusionment, and ultimately to the dark secret behind the story of Fillory. The land of his childhood fantasies turns out to be much darker and more dangerous than he ever could have imagined. . . .The prequel to the New York Times bestselling book The Magician King and the #1 bestseller The Magician's Land, The Magicians is one of the most daring and inventive works of literary fantasy in years. No one who has escaped into the worlds of Narnia and Harry Potter should miss this breathtaking return to the landscape of the imagination. From the Trade Paperback edition.

At nearly 3 hrs in, I‘m bailing. Sadly, I found it too tediously boring for me to even loathe it. It‘s just boring and I just can‘t go any further.

VanChocStrawberry I didn‘t like this one, either. I feel like I‘m super in the minority 2w
heikemarie I don‘t know why but I read this series all the way to the end but I only liked the last half of the last book. I feel you. 2w
Laughterhp Yeah, I didn‘t like this book either. I bailed on it too and have no interest in trying again! 2w

Scochrane26 I read this series (I had bought all 3 books at once) and didn‘t get into it until halfway through book 2. Then, I loved the rest. I know the show is very different, & some argue it‘s a lot better than books. (edited) 2w
wanderinglynn @VanChocStrawberry I don‘t think we are that much in the minority. I see a lot of 1 and 2 star reviews on GR. 2w
wanderinglynn @Laughterhp glad I‘m not the only one! 2w
wanderinglynn @heikemarie @Scochrane26 I know a lot of people who read it. I just can‘t get through even half of the first book. 2w

Amiable Ugh, this book was painful. I‘m in the same camp. 2w
Reagan-reads I loved the first half and then it just completely lost momentum for me. I finished it but have no interest in going any further. 2w
Skyrimir I found it interesting but HATED the main character. I haven‘t started the others. 2w
VanChocStrawberry I was super excited about it, too. And I read more than the first one, I think? There are some major consent issues...I was completely icked out by the (first?) transmogrification scene. 2w
Brooke_H I had to force myself to finish the first book. But the next two are so great! 2w
IamIamIam Ditto what @Brooke_H said! I hated everyone in this book but something happened at the end and I was hooked. The 3rd was actually my favorite!! I'm so sorry you couldn't muscle through but I totally understand why. I read this before I decided it was okay to give up if I wasn't enjoying the book so that's why I finished. 2w
mcipher Watch the show!! It is SO much better than the books, for real. I read all of them but mostly because I forced myself to. They had some redeeming qualities that I don‘t recall now. 😆 2w
MusicallyMorgan Did George R.R. Martin just compare Harry Potter to a cup of weak tea? 😂🤦‍♀️ 2w

I very rarely say this: the show is better. These 2 are even more insufferable in the books. The first 300 pages were sooooooo sloooooowwww.

Meaw_catlady I really can‘t remember if I bailed on this book or finished it it was that boring. And I‘ve watched every season of the show lol 2mo
WhatThePuck @Meaw_catlady I'm really glad they changed the character's name to Margo in the show too. 😂 I'm behind on my watching. 2mo

I'm not much into fantasy but I did enjoy this book. It had a more nuanced, one could even say darker approach to the topic. What happens to your personality when you master magical powers. Some depth for a change, though not always pleasant to read. (PS: I did write this blurb.)

This book has been sitting unread in my classroom library for years. It came recommended and I sensed that I'd love it. Why I waited so long to read it, I'm not sure. I borrowed the audiobook from my library and started listening to it while walking. I was less than halfway through the book before I pressed it into a student's hand. I knew he would love it, and he finished it before I did. HP fans and fantasy lovers, this one is not to be missed!

This is a reread. I first read this over 5 years ago and thought it was ok but then I just finished watching the first 3 seasons of the TV series (on Netflix) and LOVED it (especially Elliot and High King Margo). So I thought I‘d try the books again. And so far not really. Maybe the focus is to much on a younger Q (TV Q is older) and no Julia (while I don‘t like her, at least she‘s a major female character).

RealLifeReading A rare case of the adaptation being better than the book - at least in my opinion 4mo

High school senior Quentin Coldwater assumes that magic isn't real, until he is unexpectedly admitted to a very secretive and exclusive college of magic in upstate New York. He learns how to be a magician, graduates, and embarks on an adventure with his friends. Read like a bad mash-up of the "Harry Potter" series and The Chronicles of Narnia with a dash of "Men in Black" tossed in. Not for me.

A coming of age story targeted to adults that is obviously inspired by Harry Potter and The Chronicles of Narnia. I‘ve been waiting to watch the TV series until I could read the book, but I think this might be one of those rare cases where I prefer the show to the book.

Though the writing is good, the main characters (brilliant and rich) are pretentious little shits who spend their time getting drunk and bitching about how miserable they are.

the-flashley @scripturient That‘s awesome! We‘re spending time in Inverness and Culloden today and tomorrow and are then heading back down south through the Cairngorms. We stop briefly back in Edinburgh before flying out to London. So we won‘t be here too much longer, but if you have any recommendations for Inverness or the trip back south I would love to hear them! It's feeling like a magical night!

Two chapters down. Can't wait to see what else this book has in store for me

Mehso-so

Love the premise and the writing but the characters, and I think this is totally intended, are obnoxious & not particularly likable while the magic isn‘t all that magical—it‘s hard fricking work & no fun. While I appreciate its qualities as a well-written book, I don‘t much appreciate it as a story. It just didn‘t grab me so that I forgot everything else around me. Honestly, once the characters left Brakebills, I couldn‘t wait for it to be over.

Time to commit. I started this one a while ago—I won‘t confess exactly HOW long ago—and liked what I read. I was really enjoying it but then another shiny book came along. And another and another and...ok, I admit it, I got distracted!!! For a really long time...I‘m ready to dive back in and will start from the beginning. And this time I won‘t stop until I reach the end! 🤞 This will be #12 in the TBR deep dive.
