But his newfound powers lead him down a rabbit hole of hedonism and disillusionment, and ultimately to the dark secret behind the story of Fillory. The land of his childhood fantasies turns out to be much darker and more dangerous than he ever could have imagined. . . .The prequel to the New York Times bestselling book The Magician King and the #1 bestsellerThe Magician's Land, The Magicians is one of the most daring and inventive works of literary fantasy in years. Lev Grossman just set his profile picture to this stick figure drawing & I am DYING. 😂😂😂 It‘s ridiculous how much it looks like him! I just...I can‘t.

Also, this book‘s Litsy rating is a TRAVESTY.

VioletBramble It is considered the weakest book in trilogy. Quentin is extremely whiney in this one. I love the tv series though. That stick figure does look exactly like Lev Grossman. 2mo
monalyisha @VioletBramble I don‘t think “the worst book in the trilogy” is a curse; I think they‘re all great! But I hated the tv show. 😆 2mo
Pruzy Don‘t know what that says about me that I didn‘t find him whiney 😬 2mo
See All 14 Comments
monalyisha @Pruzy 😅 I think it‘s a frequent complaint but I also think his immaturity is central to his character; it‘s not like Lev wrote him without intention, so the fact that he needs to *seriously* grow & change didn‘t ruin it for me. It just meant that he was a dynamic character. 🤷‍♀️ 2mo
Pruzy @monalyisha Exactly! That‘s a great way to put it. Everyone forgets he was fresh out of high school at the start of the book! 2mo
VioletBramble Quentin definitely grows throughout the trilogy. I personally don‘t mind his whining. It helped me identify with him. But based on reviews he is the reason so many people never finish or dislike the first book. 2mo
LibrarianRyan I love him. He is such a nice guy. We picked the Magicians as our One book one summer title and he did an intro video for my libraries website. I hate to say I thought the book was boring. 2mo
monalyisha @LibrarianRyan @VioletBramble @Pruzy I had a weird experience where I didn‘t think I liked ”The Magicians” the first time I read it. Then, the second book came out & I was strangely...excited??? So, I went back and read the first one again & LOVED IT. I ended up adoring the series & have been chasing read-alikes ever since! (edited) 2mo
monalyisha @Pruzy @LibrarianRyan @VioletBramble Maybe everyone just needs a reread. 😉💕 2mo
monalyisha Updated info with art cred straight from the stick figure‘s mouth: “Major personal/professional milestone: I‘m interviewing Randall “xkcd” Munroe onstage Thursday night at Cooper Union, so he made a stick-figure drawing of me.” 2mo
Kimberlone I love this series! But it definitely has a lot of haters 2mo
LL1964 I loved this series so much 2mo
Clare-Dragonfly I thought that looked like Randall Munroe‘s style! How fun 😄 I haven‘t read this book but hope to someday. 2mo
Salaphina The rating of this book is very upsetting! I loved this book and the second one. The third is still on my reading list though. 2mo

I made it about 1/3 of the way, but couldn‘t push myself any further.

wanderinglynn @wideeyedreader I‘ve heard the TV adaptation is better. 4mo

wanderinglynn @wideeyedreader I haven‘t tried it yet. The book kind of turned me off. Maybe after more time has passed, I‘ll give it a try. 4mo
Amiable @wanderinglynn It‘s been a couple of years since I read it, but I am guessing I probably started skimming quite heavily after a short time. It‘s really just not very well written. 4mo
jerra I also couldn‘t get with the book! The tv show was good (tho I watched the first season only) 4mo
wanderinglynn @jerra Eventually I‘ll have to check out the show. 4mo
BarbaraTheBibliophage I read an ARC of another book from him. Or I should say I DNF'd another book from him. Not sure I'll ever try this one. Especially after the comments! 4mo
wanderinglynn @BarbaraTheBibliophage I found this one to be tedious, too much detail & not enough action. And I simply couldn‘t care about the characters. So, if you DNF‘d another of his books, passing on this one is a good idea. 4mo
ImperfectCJ I liked this one fairly well, but I definitely can't recommend the second in the trilogy (or the third). They really just get worse. So I wouldn't say you're missing much. 4mo
wanderinglynn @ImperfectCJ it‘s really too bad because this concept is right up my alley. 4mo
Exbrarian I liked this one alright, but I couldn't get into the second one. 4mo
MicrobeMom I used to and still to this da certain music reminds me of certain books! However with kids there always a lot of noise in the background when I read and it is usually not music. I can tune almost anything out. My hubby calls it my super power! 4mo

LoveToReadLiveToRead Ugh, I forced myself to finish this a few years ago but it wasn‘t worth it for me. Quentin is such a douchebag. 🙄 4mo

I very rarely say this: the show is better. These 2 are even more insufferable in the books. The first 300 pages were sooooooo sloooooowwww.

I'm not much into fantasy but I did enjoy this book. It had a more nuanced, one could even say darker approach to the topic. What happens to your personality when you master magical powers. Some depth for a change, though not always pleasant to read. (PS: I did write this blurb.)

This book has been sitting unread in my classroom library for years. It came recommended and I sensed that I'd love it. Why I waited so long to read it, I'm not sure. I borrowed the audiobook from my library and started listening to it while walking. I was less than halfway through the book before I pressed it into a student's hand. I knew he would love it, and he finished it before I did. HP fans and fantasy lovers, this one is not to be missed!

This is a reread. I first read this over 5 years ago and thought it was ok but then I just finished watching the first 3 seasons of the TV series (on Netflix) and LOVED it (especially Elliot and High King Margo). So I thought I‘d try the books again. And so far not really. Maybe the focus is to much on a younger Q (TV Q is older) and no Julia (while I don‘t like her, at least she‘s a major female character).

RealLifeReading A rare case of the adaptation being better than the book - at least in my opinion 9mo

Booklover2 Same. I finished and not sure why! 10mo

VioletBramble The second and third books in the series are much better than this one. I love the television series, which, at this point, is only loosely based on the books. 10mo
Andrew65 Oh dear! 10mo
shanaqui Yeah... I hear good stuff about this series but the first book bored me, especially since I disliked the characters. 10mo
Autumnscribe I wanted to like this book, and I tried really hard to like it, but in the end I was not a fan either. I loved the first maybe 50 pages, but then it became clear it wasn‘t for me. (Of course I made myself finish it) Oddly enough though, the television production is very entertaining. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 10mo

High school senior Quentin Coldwater assumes that magic isn't real, until he is unexpectedly admitted to a very secretive and exclusive college of magic in upstate New York. He learns how to be a magician, graduates, and embarks on an adventure with his friends. Read like a bad mash-up of the "Harry Potter" series and The Chronicles of Narnia with a dash of "Men in Black" tossed in. Not for me.

Clare-Dragonfly I really should read this. If you took the word “bad” out of your review I would think it sounded amazing. 10mo
Amiable @Clare-Dragonfly Give it a try, then! Hope you like it! 🙂 (edited) 10mo

I have started this book 3 times now. The second time I started from the beginning, but this time I'm starting from where I left off at page 238. Here's hoping I can finish it this time around. Otherwise I think I should maybe just give up.

BethM I bailed on it. 10mo
Traci1 @BethM so it's not just me? I thought everyone loved the book, but I'm finding it so dull. 10mo
Soubhiville I finished it but didn‘t like it at all. 10mo

LibrarianRyan I so bailed on this book. I tried I really did. 10mo
Lisaw13 I didn't care for this book either 10mo
jillrhudy It‘s unanimous 👎🏻 10mo
riversong153 I watched the first season of the show. I liked it but it had a ton of unnecessary sex scenes in it for my taste. I didn‘t watch season 2. 10mo
Amiable I wasn't a fan of this one, either. 10mo
Traci1 @Soubhiville @LibrarianRyan @Lisaw13 @jillrhudy @Amiable Idk if I should feel better that it's not just me or worse that I spent money on this book. I'm conflicted about bailing. On the one hand I only have about 60 pages left and hate giving up on books. On the other, do I really want to waste another hour on this book? 10mo
Traci1 @riversong153 I watched the first couple of episodes, and it just didn't do anything for me. I thought it might encourage me to finish the book, but it didn't. 10mo
jillrhudy 50 shades of Hogwarts or something. Gratuitous and stupid. 10mo

Mehso-so

A coming of age story targeted to adults that is obviously inspired by Harry Potter and The Chronicles of Narnia. I‘ve been waiting to watch the TV series until I could read the book, but I think this might be one of those rare cases where I prefer the show to the book.

Though the writing is good, the main characters (brilliant and rich) are pretentious little shits who spend their time getting drunk and bitching about how miserable they are.

2. Just 1.
3. There‘s a freaking “❄️” marked in the forecast for Saturday. 😡
4. yes
5. The Magicians. Seems like people either love or hate this series. It‘s just not for me. After having time to reflect, I really think my main issue was that the characters reminded me too much of the scummy kids I knew in high school, so I probably got a little triggered by it.

mcipher The Magicians show is better than the books... I love watching it and I didn‘t love reading them nearly as much. 12mo
hgrimes @mcipher I‘ve heard! Maybe I‘ll check it out someday. 12mo
MinDea @hgrimes I tried reading The Magicians last year and I seriously could not get into it at all. Maybe I'll watch the show! I keep wanting to read the series then watch the show but I don't see me ever trying again with the books 😒 @mcipher 12mo

hgrimes @MinDea I kept ”almost” getting into it. Like, often a chapter would end on something interesting like a monster killing people and it would seem like a conflict in the plot was starting to develop...and then it wouldn‘t ever continue in the following chapters. 😐 I got about 4/5 of the way through the first book before I bailed! 12mo
mcipher @hgrimes @MinDea I read them all but I found myself feeling kind of disappointed with them. I don‘t know what it was - they were good but something didn‘t sit right. Just watch the show - it is amazing!!😆 12mo
hgrimes @mcipher lol ok!! Will add it to the list! 12mo

Mehso-so

As a fan of the show on SyFy, I thought for sure I‘d love the series, but it‘s just “so-so.” It‘s different enough from the TV show to keep it interesting, but I found it kind of difficult to get through at some points.

You guys... I absolutely blew through this book. Why did I wait so long to read it again? It‘s weird and hilarious and sad, and I couldn‘t put it down. Now on to the second and the third and then the TV series!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

JenFowler The show is WAY different 13mo
the-flashley @JenFowler haha yeah I looked at some of the promos for it and definitely got that impression. Still, it‘s always interesting to see the differences and yell at the TV when they mess something up! 😂 13mo

I‘m sure some of my other Litten friends have been to Scotland before, but if not, I highly, highly recommend it. This is just one of a hundred spectacular views on the drive up from Loch Lomond to Loch Ness. I brought The Magicians with me to read, but how can I focus with this view? I am SO amazed by this place.

scripturient I love Scotland and we go at least once a year. Where else are you heading? Let me know if you need recommendations. 😊 13mo
Cinfhen Beautiful 🤩🤩🤩 13mo
kspenmoll I would so love to go there one day! 13mo
the-flashley @scripturient That‘s awesome! We‘re spending time in Inverness and Culloden today and tomorrow and are then heading back down south through the Cairngorms. We stop briefly back in Edinburgh before flying out to London. So we won‘t be here too much longer, but if you have any recommendations for Inverness or the trip back south I would love to hear them!
