Lazy morning annotating my deep read of the month, Dracula with one of my fur babies. Been really enjoying using highlights to annotate, feels a lot more realistic than using sticky tabs and I can make sure everything I want marked is easily marked. Also loving to see how far the vampire lore/genre has come since this classic was released in the 1800s!

Do you annotate your books at all?

Ruthiella I never annotate. I make notes separately, when necessary. 1w

For 2022 I wants to deep read at least one book a month and wanted to read more classics so I slammed the two goals together and feel like I‘m back in college. For June I‘m reading Dracula and since I was out of sticky tabs, I decided to try using different colored highlights and am loving the results!

Fairly book-related news post… 🧛‍♂️

I posted about this upcoming world record attempt when you first posted about #draculadaily, Sarah.

Well, they did it! 1369 vampires, all wearing the correct attire, descended upon Whitby Abbey yesterday and smashed the previous record!

I am loving this new trend of Classic newsletters! 📖

1. Yes! Dracula! And also Frankenstein, although that one hasn‘t started yet.
2. I think they‘re brilliant and reigniting a desire for serialized fiction.
3. Moby Dick. I‘m not sure how that would work, but maybe I could finally make it through that book! 😂

#SundayFunday Have a fantastic day and remember to tag me!

Clare-Dragonfly Ooh, I didn‘t know there would be a Frankenstein one! Thank you! I love that it says it‘s “for Tumblr,” having been on Tumblr a bit recently and seen the Dracula Daily obsession 😂 When I subscribed to the Frankenstein one it gave me more suggestions—“Watson,” Carmilla, Pride and Prejudice, and Moby Dick! 1mo
ravenlee I saw an interview with the creator of Dracula Daily, and he mentioned this family in which the mom was writing short notes for the daughter‘s lunch box and she said they were too short so the mom started putting a paragraph of Moby Dick on each one! I could probably handle it that way. 😆 1mo

1) no; but I dream whole stories. When I wrote one of them for college creative writing, the prof said it was my best writing yet. I should write more of them down. I even remember some of these dreams as if they‘re books

2) tagged (I‘m weird)

3) sigh, surgery in 2 weeks on my elbow—so getting my books organized today has helped me prepare for downtime to read

Want to play @Nute @GingerAntics @KristiAhlers @Catsandbooks ?

GingerAntics Oh no, what‘s up with your elbow?! Elbow injuries are the worst. You never realise how many movements jostle, tense, or somehow involve your elbow until the bloody thing hurts to move. Worst injury ever. I‘ve dreamed whole chapters of stories as well. I always try to write them down. I actually have the paperback of Dracula. I‘ve never read it though. I can‘t remember if I was supposed to read it for a class or not. 😬 2mo

Texreader @GingerAntics @TheBookHippie @Catsandbooks Thanks for your kind wishes. I have a torn something (tendon/ligament?) in the elbow that will be removed. It feels like a knife is embedded in it and it even hurts to the touch (even breeze from a fan on it ratchets up the pain). Second surgery in 4 months! But I desperately cannot wait for this one. I‘m in so much pain it‘s almost unbearable. 2mo
GingerAntics @Texreader oh god that sounds terrible!!! I hope this surgery stops all that pain. Holy crap. 2mo

I was honestly not anticipating having this much fun reading Dracula, but I am LOVING it! I actually got a hard copy so that I can follow along/kind of see what is coming next, so I wasn't expecting to get another email until May 12, Jonathan's next entry. However, the SubStack is putting everything in chronological order instead of sticking strictly to the book order - so this letter from Mina appeared today even though it isn't until the next ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) chapter. I have somewhat mixed feelings about this, but think that on the whole I'm willing to roll with it. 😂 What do you all think?? #DraculaDaily

PuddleJumper Oh that's interesting! I didn't realize they were going to jiggle things around like that. It makes it a different way to read the book 2mo
BookwormAHN I've read the book a few times so this will be interesting and I like the fact that's its not strick with the book's format. 2mo
Maggie4483 I don‘t know how I feel about that either. I think If I‘d already read Dracula, I‘d probably love it. My only concern as a first time reader would be that big events may not have the same impact out of the order Stoker wrote it in. I‘m still going to stick to it, though! (edited) 2mo
Clare-Dragonfly Oh wow, I think that‘s really cool! I wish I‘d read Dracula more than once before so I could really appreciate the difference, but I‘ll roll with it. It‘s kind of like how sometimes I reread the Narnia books in publication order, and sometimes in chronological order 😁 2mo

The book starts May 3 & ends Nov 10, and so do the emails - check it out here (it's free!!)⬇

#two4tuesday Thank you @TheSpineView and @Eggs for the tag!

1) tagged; & a childhood fave Rebecca, & not counting “The,” then the Historian. And a book I‘m reading now, Roots. All excellent books and their titles speak volumes. Excellent question.

2) certainly based on (1), a compelling argument can be made that is the case with the right title for the right story.

But there are gorgeous multi-word titles too. So I refuse to discriminate! 😉

*RE-READ* I needed to revisit this old favorite, to check it off The List, and I picked a good time to do it. I love how 🦇 💩 everything is in this book. It‘s just one insane journey to the next. It‘s not the same as the movies (as some of my fellow students asked) but I feel it‘s better. There‘s an oppressive, ominous presence that permeates the narrative. Mina‘s a boss. Shoulda named my daughter for her. I love it. 😊 209/1,001 #1001Books

I picked the 1931 version of Dracula with Bela Lugosi for my #scarepair for week 1‘s #Screamthon challenge, because I hadn‘t seen it. It‘s not much of a scare, lol. It‘s only 75 minutes long so a lot of the book was left out and also a couple of main characters. Harker doesn‘t go to Transylvania, Renfield does. Dr. Seward is Mina‘s father in the movie. There are several other changes.

Bookzombie Also, there is a shot of a possum crawling into a coffin. I think they were used to look like large rats. There is another shot with armadillos. I looked it up and both of those animals appear to live only in North and South America and not in Transylvania. 9mo

I can finally take Dracula off of my TBR!!!!
I read and listened to the novel. I enjoyed it overall. At times it dragged a bit and I think that had more to do with already being so familiar with the story. I did think it was sometimes a bit repetitive and it felt like most of that came from Van Helsing. I loved the format of diary entries and letters though.
I included Count von Count in my graphic because every time I mentioned Dracula ⬇️

#ThatsClassic - October - Book One: Dracula -
It‘s good to be participating in this book club. Already with the first book selection I have revisited a much loved classic that I probably would have never read again. It was as spooky & maddening as the first time around. There are many repeated descriptions and delayed sharing of vital information in the book, but that doesn‘t bother me. What is spot on —> this vampire is a true bloody fiend.👇🏽

Nute THIS rendition of Dracula is not “an okay vampire” or one of the “nice type” vampires. He is depicted as an evil monstrosity. It is factual that Drac seems to be MIA in much of the book that is about him. Still this book is a fight of, dare I say, good versus evil...dare I whisper, a battle for human souls. For that reason it rates high as an atmospheric gothic experience of true horror to me. It remains a favorite literary classic! (edited) 2y
TheNeverendingTBR This cover! 😍 2y
Annie1215 Thanks for reading along! I also lives starting with this one - the true definition of a classic. It‘s funny to reflect back on this canon of vampire after there have been so many modern versions. 2y
See All 10 Comments
batsy That's a fabulous cover! 2y
Gissy Love that cover!😱 2y
Nute @Annie1215 Yes! That is probably my most enjoyment of the reread of Dracula - being reminded of the more traditional sense of what a vampire is (*monster* *evil entity*) and the real life dread associated with vampirism folklore back in the day. 2y
eeclayton Agreed. I like it too that Drac is not the least romanticized in any way, there's no touching backstory, just pure evil. 2y
Nute @TheNeverendingTBR @batsy @Gissy Thank you!😌 I really like this collection of books designed by Ruben Toledo. He designed for six titles only...I guess that he is more renowned as a fashion illustrator, and his real profession lies there in. (edited) 2y
Nute @eeclayton Not romanticized at all! For running into a vampire late night in a back alley, please let it be the Cullens!😆 This vampire, Dracula...no late night encounters at all EVER!😱 (edited) 2y
