It took me way too long to finish this wonderful historical fiction of the fortunate or unfortunate life of Stella Fortuna. Tracing the Fortuna family‘s roots from Italy to America, covering 150 years of drama, hardship, mishaps, marriages, births and deaths this book was absorbing & engaging. Highly recommended. The ending was a bit rushed but I liked that the author wrapped up all the various storylines. #RoadTrippin #BackSeatReader 🤓

*Trigger Warning* This book contains physical and sexual assault on females of all ages. Stella Fortuna, whose name literally means lucky star, has always unintentionally tempted fate and has the scars to prove it. The book is a slow winding account of her life and how little control she had over it due to having the misfortune of being born to an abusive father, as well as her immigrant experience turned American nightmare.

#Unpopularopinion time but I didn‘t love this book. I wanted to and I kept trying to but it just never happened. The whole story is just brutal and sad as if nothing good ever happened to Stella. Don‘t get me wrong, the writing is amazing, the character building off the charts but to spend 450 pages slogging through someone else‘s misery - not really my thing. It did break my heart to learn that the whole thing was inspired by the authors family.

thereadingowlvina I felt the same. I bailed early though - page 85. The story was too depressed for me 😑 3d
Kaila-ann @thereadingowlvina I think the writing saved it enough for me to finish, that and I kept hoping for something good to happen for her. 3d

So I guess I just don‘t get this book. Stella is a fantastic character. And in individual pieces, many parts of the story are interesting: many horribly sad and tragic, some almost comedically horrific, some just funny. But there is no plot development really. It‘s just a bunch of things that happen over the course of Stella‘s lifetime.

Crazeedi I totally loved this book! So funny how we all have different tastes at different times! 1mo

I wanted to love this one but found it to be a slog in audio. I just didn't want to pick it up and hear more of Stella's misfortune. I think I was hoping for a bit of magical realism and less outright tragedy in those seven or eight deaths. There is much here to enjoy and the writing is solid, just wasn't what I was hoping for.

A sweeping saga about the life and death of Stella Fortuna, an Italian born American immigrant who had much more modern attitudes than the times she lived in. I think most will already know Stella‘s story in some way - my Grandmother‘s is very similar - and so will resonate deeply. However, I think for some it might also be too painful a read (TW in the comments). But this is Stella‘s story, and it will stay with me for a while ♥️

Turns out, American copy wins. This is why, and this is why I‘ve lost my bookish mind....last night I noticed in the British copy, 2 things were missing: Map end pages of Ievoli, AND the family tree (which I have posted below). I want you to know I didn‘t sleep well last night (hence losing my bookish mind over details). I went to Barnes and Noble today to secure an American copy. I left BN on a bookish high and drove through puddles of sewage👇🏽

JanuarieTimewalker13 There was some kind of major poop dilemma at Houlihan‘s and my car still smells like a sh&tmobile. This too shall pass. The things we do for book love. Lol 2mo

JanuarieTimewalker13 @Aims42 Well, I just discovered my British edition doesn‘t have a family tree in the beginning of the book, like my American library copy had. That‘s a shame-in this case, I would go with American copy for that piece of information....I‘m a bit shocked it‘s missing!! 2mo
Aims42 @JanuarieTimewalker13 totally shocking! Why wouldn‘t that be in all copies?? 2mo
JanuarieTimewalker13 @Aims42 I have no idea, but you kind of need it!! I just asked someone that gave a review and had the British one pictured if her copy had it. It may take awhile for a response. This is disheartening! 2mo

I started reading The Seven or Eight Deaths of Stella Fortuna by Juliet Grames this afternoon. This is such a beautiful and brilliant novel - I want to savour it and devour it at the same time! This is the second book for my 20 Books of Summer challenge. #amreading #StellaFortuna

JanuarieTimewalker13 I have a quick question-I see you also have British edition...I just received mine, after having to return American edition to library. My British edition does not have a family tree, like the American edition does in the beginning of the book. I‘m so confused as to why-Does yours have it? (edited) 2mo
RatherTooFondofBooks My copy doesn‘t have a family tree in either, which is a shame when the family is quite complicated to keep track of. Are you enjoying the book? I think it‘s a wonderful novel so far. 2mo
JanuarieTimewalker13 The book is amazing, I‘m almost done, but I think it‘s so sad that the British edition has neither the family tree nor the map end pages. I‘m going to post the Inside of the American edition later. I had to purchase an American copy. This is a lesson learned.I‘m not sure how I could decipher the difference online, however, when purchasing it. I‘ll post to alert other people. That‘s prob why the American copy is a bit more expensive. 2mo

The author uses her own family history for this tale. The eponymous Stella is not the first to carry her name, with a sister who died during infancy. From rocky beginnings the Fortuna family face poverty, war, migration, and a host of author traumas along the way. Some of the content makes for very uncomfortable reading, but the story is told with detail and respect for a very complex and interesting past.

This is most likely the BEST BOOK I'll read all year. I adore Stella 🥰😭 --> all the emojis. Author Grames is masterful in her development of characters who just jump from the page. Historical fiction from a rugged village in Italy 🇮🇹, across the ocean, and to Connecticut. Stella's the star, but readers get a chance to know all of those in her orbit, and woah, is it a cast of characters!! I cannot say enough good things about this book. 5🌟

As a non-mother, I feel like I missed a lot of what this book had to say. I also don't love love stories, and I hated that the main focus of the longest section was about Stella's courtship. It really dragged in the middle. I picked up the book for the deaths and got a lot of lives. Overall, the story was well told, and other readers will likely appreciate the rawness of Stella's life. I admired many things about her.

This was awesome! If you love all things Italian, read this book. The story tells of Stella's life in Calabria , and her life in Hartford. This book touched a nerve with me. I married into a family like Stella‘s, with a capo very like the men depicted here - autocratic, vulgar, and sly. As I read, I could feel my skin prickle and my heart pound as I raced through passages describing the utter hopelessness Stella felt in the face of the patriarchal familia in which she was caught. Needing to know how Stella‘s life turned out kept me going through the book, and I was not disappointed.

THE SEVEN OR EIGHT DEATHS OF STELLA FORTUNA tells the tale of the lives of the author's family and specifically Stella and Tina who were the best of friends as they grew up in Italy and as they aged in America until the final accident happened.

The writing in this book is beautiful, descriptive, and an outstanding debut.

Marvelous, magnificent, original, and impressive are some adjectives to describe this book.
