I liked this book for the most part, but I wasn't completely satisfied by the ending. I didn't realize before I read it that it was written in 1999.

Know that feeling. But really, To Kill A Mockingbird is still my favorite of all time. Just getting around to reading this one, so far so good!

Contrary to popular opinion, I didn‘t love “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” and the writing style was most responsible for this. I didn‘t hate it, but I just didn‘t feel it was for me – 2 stars.

My full review is up on my blog now 📚

effani Same! I read it in high school and didn't like it then, and I've never understood why it's so beloved. 1mo
whatrebeccasread @effani glad to hear I'm not alone! 1mo
GirlNamedJesse Agreed! 1mo
CarolynM I did like it, but it's one of the few times where I like the film better than the book. 1mo

Met Stephen Chobsky tonight at Powell‘s. He read a surprise excerpt from Perks that will be released in the 20th Anniversary Edition, I almost cried after he was done reading it, it was so good!

His new book is different from Peru‘s but I‘m really liking it!

Set in the early 1990s, Stephen Chbosky's novel is a coming of age drama which follows an introverted teenager through his freshman year is high school. The entire novel is a series of letters that the protagonist writes to a nameless friend describing various events during his Freshman year of High school. The novel explores various YA themes which almost everyone of us can relate to at least in some aspect of the other. My rating 4/5.

Last post! And this is marked spoiler in case you are attending his event. If so, keep scrolling so you will be just as surprised!

Stephen read a brand new letter from Charlie that is featured in his 20th year edition of Perks of Being a Wallflower... and there was not a dry eye in the house. If Perks moved you, helped you, got you through a bad time, etc., find yourself the new edition and see what Charlie has to say. And bring a tissue.

I wasn‘t sure how to feel about this book going in since it was never assigned reading. Having read The Catcher in the Rye not long ago, I was a bit concerned that it would be another angsty teenage cliche. I was pleasantly surprised by Charlie. Bits of the story were out there and some issues were barely discussed but overall I still found that I really enjoyed it. #rorygilmorechallenge #rorygilmorereadinglist #rorygilmorereadingchallenge

Inspired by @erzascarletbookgasm I chose Charlie for the #BasketCase prompt. Charlie is an outsider, who does not fit into the mainstream groups at his school, because he is dealing with not-so-mainstream issues.

Been keeping a book journal for 20 years (and by “book journal“, I mean “nearest loose piece of paper“). Came across a stack while cleaning out the basement and fell down a rabbit hold of past-reads...still loving all the quotes I scribbled from Wallflower, and as expected I now have the overwhelming urge to RE-READ ALL THE BOOKS!

Started off the last week of #BFC with a bang at my girlfriend‘s Hens Party. Here we are at Deluxe Deluxe after high tea. I was good with alcohol for the rest of the week, though I did have some sweets today at a course I went to on teaching numeracy. I only made one yoga class this week but got all my stretching in. I hope to be more strict with myself in the next round. funnily enough I didn‘t finish any audio books but started plenty.

Charlie's first year of high school as told in a series of letters to a stranger he'd heard mentioned as a sympathetic listener.

Charlie's English teacher thinks he is very gifted, though he struck me as emotionally and linguistically rather backward for his age (15/16). Nevertheless he is a fascinating character and I found this look at the world through his eyes almost impossible to put to down.

Chbosky has done a great job at his first novel. The whole books is in form of letters and it feels like Charlie is trying to reach out to you. The way Charlie tells us his stories and memories and the way he places his words is just beautiful to watch develop over the book.

I also watched the movie directed by Chbosky himself and I think it‘s that the plot is very followed in the movie too. The movie and book are both very lovely!

I went into this book fully expecting to hate it BUT I was totally taken by surprise by how much this book affected me. Reliving the angsts of HS, fitting in, finding your tribe, dealing with parents/siblings, discovering new music, books...it was all so beautifully, innocently seen through the eyes of Charlie, an awkward 15 year old. There was something so endearing about Charlie, I wished I could go back to HS & fix assumptions I made.
