5 ⭐️!

I enjoyed the alternating perspectives in this novel. However, the book summary felt somewhat misleading—I found it revolved more around Tova than Marcellus, the octopus. I thought the octopus would play a larger role in the story. The pacing is slow, but the ending was satisfying. I'd recommend this book to others who enjoy character-driven stories. It's an enjoyable read but not deeply impactful.

I had high expectations when I borrowed this book because it was a whopping 4.23 average rating on Goodreads. When I started the book, it definitely piqued my interest and curiosity. I wanted so badly to know what is outside the bunker.

It could have been a good book if the writer altered the ending. A lot of the writings became repetitive and circled around the same idea. If I could put it into a phrase, it'll be Eat Sleep Work Repeat.

My most favourite part of the book was when Charlie called the exercise machine hotline just to tell the lady on the phone to have a good night.

My least favourite part of the book was when Charlie was seeing Mary Elizabeth. She was too much for him, there was no balance at all in the courtship.

What I will remember most about this book was whenever Charlie resorted to his books when he felt like not doing anything else. I would do the same too.

It was a complete torture trying to finish this book! I am not a gamer, nor am I a fan of gaming. And 90% of this story are vivid descriptions of the gaming world and characters.

BennettBookworm Agreed! I had to DNF because the sexual violence was so disturbing to me, too. I just could not get into the story at all. 13mo
fv.reads @BennettBookworm Oh and that! Yes! It doesn't match the concept of the book at all too. I pressed on because it was the Goodreads Best Fiction winner for 2022. I thought it might get better... it didn't. 13mo

Bailed @ 20%. This book bores me terribly! I tried.. I really did. It was only about 200+ pages and yet I struggled to continue. It's very unfortunate because the book cover really caught my eye. Also, don't trust Goodreads rating. I personally don't think it deserves the 4 stars.

Bailedbailed

This was one of the most mundane books I have ever read. It bores the hell out of me. I am not big on theater so reading too much of it makes me sick. I tried to find spoilers online but to no avail. I only read somewhere that this book is also set amid the Covid-19. As soon as I learned that, I decided to bail. We have already experienced years of the pandemic, I do not wish to read more about it.

I was so excited to get my hands on this copy. It seemed to make everyone emotional. But when I finally read the first few pages... it bored me to death! I tried.. I really did. But I bailed about 10% in.

Vansa 😂😂DOES not improve at all. It felt like reading a 12 year olds idea of “ intellectual“ conversation 13mo

I love how comfortable I am with the low level of spiciness in this book. It's enough to tell you what's happening, but subtle enough that you don't have to turn around to make sure no one is reading from the page. (Cringe!)

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I couldn‘t put it down. Definitely a page-turner! I am not a fan of Hollywood but I loved reading about all of Evelyn‘s husbands and her one true love.

My most favourite part of the book was when Captain Beck billet at Vianne‘s home. Somehow, he took care of Vianne and was a pleasant man. They probably had feelings for each other.

My least favourite part of the book was when Vianne had to part with a certain someone.

What I will remember most about this book was when Vianne tied strings to the tree at the front of her house to symbolize each person who was important in her life and had left.

My most favourite part of the book was when Charlotte resided with her colleague's grandpa awhile. Where she found herself in her drawings. She had time to herself and had the luxury to clear her headspace.

What I will remember most about this book was when Riley instructed Charlie, for the very first time, to go to his place to wake him up the next day. It feels especially special when you‘re chosen for such intimate favors.

My most favourite part of the book was when Lowen had access to all of Verity‘s notes and resources. She spend her time reading unpublished manuscripts and personal notes.

My least favourite part of the book was when Lowen was caught redhanded doing something she ought not to be doing.

What I will remember most about this book was when Lowen found out about Verity‘s secret in the manuscripts that was written by Verity herself.

My most favourite part of the book was when Jack managed to escape from the ‘room‘ and run away from Old Nick.

My least favourite part of the book was when Old Nick would always come to the room to demand sexual needs from Ma.

What I will remember most about this book was the fact that Jack had to sleep in a hidden compartment of the room and wait until Old Nick leaves the room so that he can sleep with his Ma.

My most favourite part of the book was reading all the adventures Diana had around the island.

My least favourite part of the book was the Covid aspect. I am already living it for the past 3 years, so reading more about it was the last thing I wanted to do. I decided to be ignorant though.

What I will remember most about this book was that the postcards that was written to Finn by Diana from the island.

It's not the usual Murakami book but it is definitely one that's hard to put down. So much simplicity in the protagonist's love life but yet intriging enough. As usual, Murakami described all the normalities so perfectly. Even when the protagonist is just ralking a walk in the park, it's magical.

This is a phenomenal novel! I truly love it! I couldn't put this book down. It has got so much feels to it. Although, I must admit it's quite deep and dark. And the melancholy it brings, makes you want to curl up into your bed and stare into blank space for a while. Definitely a re-read!

Velvetfur On a completely unrelated note - I adore that blue of the laptop keyboard! What laptop is it, please? I'm dreaming of affording a new one at some point... 6y

On to the next one!

I'm going at a reading rate of 5 days per book. I feel so slow!

Libby1 You‘re not slow! As long as you‘re enjoying the book it is worth the time. 😊 6y
Becker My goal is actually to slow down and enjoy all the little details of the book. Sometimes I think I miss small nuances in a book because I am plowing through it. 6y

The book started out pretty slow, but halfway in, Marianne's personalities really shine through. The rest of the characters starts to bloom as well. I almost bailed mid-book, but thank god I stayed through. The ending is so sweet and satisfying!
