These Witches Don't Burn
These Witches Don't Burn | Isabel Sterling
"Infused with page-turning suspense, bittersweet romance, shocking twists, and tragic turns, Sterling has written a standout debut." --Dana Mele, author of People Like Us Hannah's a witch, but not the kind you're thinking of. She's the real deal, an Elemental with the power to control fire, earth, water, and air. But even though she lives in Salem, Massachusetts, her magic is a secret she has to keep to herself. If she's ever caught using it in front of a Reg (read: non-witch), she could lose it. For good. So, Hannah spends most of her time avoiding her ex-girlfriend (and fellow Elemental Witch) Veronica, hanging out with her best friend, and working at the Fly By Night Cauldron selling candles and crystals to tourists, goths, and local Wiccans. But dealing with her ex is the least of Hannah's concerns when a terrifying blood ritual interrupts the end-of-school-year bonfire. Evidence of dark magic begins to appear all over Salem, and Hannah's sure it's the work of a deadly Blood Witch. The issue is, her coven is less than convinced, forcing Hannah to team up with the last person she wants to see: Veronica. While the pair attempt to smoke out the Blood Witch at a house party, Hannah meets Morgan, a cute new ballerina in town. But trying to date amid a supernatural crisis is easier said than done, and Hannah will have to test the limits of her power if she's going to save her coven and get the girl, especially when the attacks on Salem's witches become deadlier by the day. Isabel Sterling's delightful, suspenseful debut is equal parts sweet romance and thrilling mystery. With everything she loves on the line, Hannah must confront this murderous villain before her coven--and any chance she has with the new girl--is destroyed.

“I gently pull my wrist from her grip. 'Because,' I say, my voice so soft it's nearly swallowed up by the trees, 'I'm standing here, telling you how much you hurt me, and you can't hear it.' Tears fill my eyes. I've lost the strength to hide them. 'You broke my heart, and you didn't even notice. How can I ...' My throat closes up, I look away. 'How could I ever trust you to put the pieces back together?'"

A cute read in the lead-up to fall full of queer witches trying to stop a series of threats terrorizing their town, from blood witches to witch hunters. I liked the magic lore and the characters. Story seemed to lag at times but overall a really enjoyable read that even managed to surprise me a few times with unexpected twists. And I'm always here for a good witchy read!

Doesn‘t that 📖 just 😱, hello 🍁?!? Seasonally, it‘s a win - it‘s light, quirky and 🧙🏻‍♀️🔮! Plot wise, it‘s very 👧. Haunting between a pick and a so-so, I‘m going with pick for those 👻ly vibes, perfectly suited to this early September morning. I would have preferred this as a standalone. Some books don‘t need series, and this is one of them.

rachelsbrittain I'm working my way through this one right now! 2mo

Hannah is a queer teen elemental witch trying to move past a breakup when events start happening in Salem which could threaten her, her family, and her coven. It‘s a bit slow to start and the cover is awful, especially considering how dark it gets, but I enjoyed it. It‘s not getting much Litsy love and I‘m not sure why, but I look forward to the next book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was a fun read! I wanted to read it because it‘s set in Salem, MA, which is one of my favorite towns. I do think this may have been a little to YA for me personally, but the story was cute though. I listened to it on audible and thought the narrator did a good job.

I was really looking forward to a fun, witchy, queer YA romance/teen drama with this one but those pieces never quite came together for me. Honestly with all the never-fully-expanded-upon references to what happened between Hannah and Veronica and to some of the witch lore I thought I missed a whole first book! It ended up keeping my interest when the pacing of the mystery of who‘s after the coven picked up but I don‘t think I‘ll read the sequel.

Rating-4/5 Stars
Fantasy, romance, and mystery-three combinations I love in my books. When I first read These Witches Don‘t Burn, I thought it was meh and very hard for me to connect with Hannah in the beginning. However, the mystery of who was hunting the witches pulled me in and didn‘t let me go until the very ending.

I waited for this book for months and I was pretty disappointed 😕 There are some YA books with mature dialogue that can be read by anyone: this is NOT one of those books 🤨 The extremely juvenile dialogue was cliche and predictable. The romances were adorable!! (It‘s the only thing saving it from being a ‘pan‘) the characters were compelling enough to keep me reading but the ending was so bad I kind of wished I bailed 😶
⭐️ ⭐️ and 1/2 out of 5.

JoScho Oh good to know but disappointing. I have been wanting to read this one. 4mo
HOTPock3tt @JoScho Me too! 😐 I waited for so long. I even entered my first goodreads giveaway (which I didn‘t win) trying to get this book lol 🤣 I was happy with the relationships in the story but that was about it. I wish there was more about witchcraft in it too 😕 (edited) 4mo
