Paris: The Novel | Edward Rutherfurd
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER From Edward Rutherfurd, the grand master of the historical novel, comes a dazzling epic about the magnificent city of Paris. Moving back and forth in time, the story unfolds through intimate and thrilling tales of self-discovery, divided loyalty, and long-kept secrets. As various characters come of age, seek their fortunes, and fall in and out of love, the novel follows nobles who claim descent from the hero of the celebrated poem The Song of Roland; a humble family that embodies the ideals of the French Revolution; a pair of brothers from the slums behind Montmartre, one of whom works on the Eiffel Tower as the other joins the underworld near the Moulin Rouge; and merchants who lose everything during the reign of Louis XV, rise again in the age of Napoleon, and help establish Paris as the great center of art and culture that it is today. With Rutherfurds unrivaled blend of impeccable research and narrative verve, this bold novel brings the sights, scents, and tastes of the City of Light to brilliant life. Praise for Paris A tour de force . . . [Edward Rutherfurds] most romantic and richly detailed work of fiction yet.Bookreporter Fantastic . . . as grand and engrossing as Paris itself.Historical Novels Review This saga is filled with historical detail and a huge cast of characters, fictional and real, spanning generations and centuries. But Paris, with its art, architecture, culture and couture, is the undisputed main character.Fort Worth Star-Telegram Both Paris, the venerable City of Light, and Rutherfurd, the undisputed master of the multigenerational historical saga, shine in this sumptuous urban epic.Booklist There is suspense, intrigue and romance around every corner.Asbury Park Press

This book sounds really good but it‘s a #chunkster, and I‘m weary of those. Has anyone read this one? 🇫🇷

Freespirit I actually haven't read this one, but I have read several of Edward Rutherfords books and they are fantastic. He picks a city and weaves a wonderful story based on its history. 6mo
Amiable I read it a few years ago, right before we went to France. I gave it 3 stars. It didn‘t stick with me —I don‘t remember much of the plot. 6mo

Not #bookrelated but I am so heartbroken by today‘s fire at Notre Dame and I am sure there are other #littens that can relate. Paris is my favorite place in the world and never could have imagined that this epic monument wouldn‘t be there forever. I am heartened by the fact that part of the structure is intact and am sure they will rebuild to some extent but still devastating that 850 years of history is gone. 😭

Bklover 😥💔 9mo
hjreviews Do they know how the fire started? I‘ve been following the coverage of the fire but haven‘t heard anything about how it started yet 9mo
Rachel_nyc @hjreviews I think they‘re still investigating but as of now are calling it accidental. I‘m guessing the construction going on was a factor. 9mo
BarbaraBB It is so sad, so much history destroyed. 9mo
Rachel_nyc @BarbaraBB I‘m glad much of the structure survived, not to mention the relics but still so sad to see it with so much damage. My favorite view, from the left bank, will never be the same. 😢 9mo

Mehso-so

A multigenerational saga that takes readers on a journey through thousands of years of Parisian history as experienced through the lives of several families. I got kind of bored by the end of this 800-page novel. 3/5 stars

JackOBotts Have you read New York (by Rutherfurd)? I really enjoyed that saga, but it was a long read. If you like historical fiction about American history, I recommend John Jake‘s Kent Family Chronicles (8-books). First is 13mo
callielafleur I would also recommend James Michener. Hawaii is a favorite of mine. 13mo
Amiable @JackOBotts Yes, I have read "New York." And I read the Kent Family Chronicles a LONG (we're talking decades) time ago, but I do remember enjoying them. I should revisit that series. Thanks for the reminder! ? 13mo

Bailedbailed

I really wanted to love this book. The cover is beautiful, it's been on my TBR for a few years, and I love epic historical fiction, but I started it 3 months ago and I'm only at about 350 pages out of 805. It's boring and hard to follow because it jumps around in time and there are too many characters to keep track of. What a disappointment.

Laura317 I felt the same way. I bailed finally. 2y

Truly an epic story. I love intergenerational, spanning centuries type of novels.

Feeling very accomplished after listening to the 36 hour audiobook! Although I think I will read the other two books I have by this author (New York and London) in print!!

Felso @jessberk13 Have you read The Princes of Ireland : The Dublin Saga also by Edward Rutherford? I read it a few years ago and loved it! I have London and New York on the TBR pile, I‘ll get to someday. :) 2y

Only 83% and my loan expires in a day!!!! I‘m going to listen as much as I can tonight, but I‘m so worried that I won‘t finish before it disappears!! How do I renew an Overdrive audiobook?!?!

DebinHawaii I don't know if there are differences between Overdrive library platforms but when it gets within a day or two of it's due-back date I get a "Request Again" underneath the book in my loans page. If it isn't on hold for someone else I get it right after the original book due date expires, otherwise I get a notice that I'm on the waiting list for it. Hope that helps. ? 2y

Excellent historical fiction. Took me a bit to get into the story, but once I did was entranced. It felt like I got to know the city so well -- the people and the neighborhoods. I have a trip to Paris coming up in a few weeks and this was a perfect book to read before I leave.

This was my book club pick for the month of September. Needless to say, I bailed at page 400. The book has 828 pages and too many one dimensional stereotypical characters. All the voices sound the same. The writing was dry at best. For those who know nothing about Paris maybe you'll enjoy it. If you already have significant background on Paris, I say skip it. #dnf

If this had been only 400 pages, I would give it a 'like'. But 800 pages of back & forth between families AND between eras was too much. I'm not sure why Rutherfurd decided not to write it chronologically.
