NW: A Novel | Zadie Smith
New York Times Ten Best Books of 2012“A boldly Joycean appropriation, fortunately not so difficult of entry as its great model… Like Zadie Smith’s much-acclaimed predecessor White Teeth (2000), NW is an urban epic.” --Joyce Carol Oates, The New York Review of BooksThis is the story of a city. The northwest corner of a city. Here you’ll find guests and hosts, those with power and those without it, people who live somewhere special and others who live nowhere at all.  And many people in between.Every city is like this. Cheek-by-jowl living. Separate worlds. And then there are the visitations: the rare times a stranger crosses a threshold without permission or warning, causing a disruption in the whole system. Like the April afternoon a woman came to Leah Hanwell’s door, seeking help, disturbing the peace, forcing Leah out of her isolation…Zadie Smith’s brilliant tragi-comic new novel follows four Londoners - Leah, Natalie, Felix and Nathan – as they try to make adult lives outside of Caldwell, the council estate of their childhood. From private houses to public parks, at work and at play, their London is a complicated place, as beautiful as it is brutal, where the thoroughfares hide the back alleys and taking the high road can sometimes lead you to a dead end.Depicting the modern urban zone – familiar to town-dwellers everywhere – Zadie Smith’s NW is a quietly devastating novel of encounters, mercurial and vital, like the city itself.

A book like this I have to put up against other novels going for a similar achievement—stuff like what Helen DeWitt writes, or Foster Wallace or Pynchon—and I don‘t think this novel holds up there.

She chose to write it this way, so those are the comparisons I end up making: rather challenging, postmoderny material that can strain the reader.

I don‘t think Smith pulls it off nearly as well.

I still love this author though.

After mixed feelings abt Swing Time i loved this story of life in the london suburb of Caldwell told through the voice of two childhood friends.Leah trapped in a marriage but not wanting children, + Natalie a barrister who has dragged herself from her poor origins to the height of her profession but faces a crisis in her life. These stories book end felix a tale of modern London society very resonant of current headlines.A Brilliant tale.

I might have liked this book less if I hadn't listened to the audiobook. Or if I wasn't familiar with this area of London (the NW postcode area), even if I've never lived here.

As with all of Zadie Smith's work, I found it a bit too uneven. But maybe that's like NW itself. It's one of those books that opened a window into the lives of people living alongside me in the same city.

Apparently there's also a BBC drama worth watching.

Sadly, my first Zadie Smith novel wasn‘t my cup of tea at all.Maybe I would‘ve liked it if I had been born in the same time, place or with the same social and ethnical background as the characters.Maybe I would‘ve understood them instead of hating them. The writing was very confused and inconsistent in my opinion, jumping back and forth in time frequently. I didn‘t really know what Smith wanted to tell us with this book. Should I try another Smith?

Buechersuechtling Hats 🎩 off‼️ I disliked it so much I could not force myself to finish it. 10mo
LaLecture @Buechersuechtling I totally understand that. The style of writing got better when the perspective changed from Leah to Felix but I still didn‘t like it at all. I tend to finish books so I can rant about them on the internet 😂. 10mo

Wasn't it possible that what others mistook as intelligence might in fact be only a sort of mutation of the will? She could sit in one place longer than other children, be bored for hours without complaint, and was completely devoted to filling in every last corner of the coloring books.

Diving into my very first #ZadieSmith novel. Don‘t really know what to expect.

Have you read anything by her?

mdhughes72 Yes I‘ve read this one, as well as 10mo
mdhughes72 White Teeth was the one I enjoyed the most. 10mo

LaLecture @mdhughes72 Did you like “N-W” too? I‘ve seen “Swing Time” a lot in bookstores. If I like this one, I might check it out too. 10mo
mdhughes72 I‘ve read this one as well. Both it and Swing Time seemed more meh than White Teeth, though neither is a bad book by any means. 10mo
Buechersuechtling I gave it a try because it sounded promising and I was being really curious about the painting Zadie Smith would draw of the contemporary structures of the society that in a wider sense we all live in but I gave in after not quite 100 pages. I could not connect to the story she tells. It was told too slow for me. I had the impression that nothing interesting is happening and that bored me. 🤷🏽‍♀️ After that I didn‘t touch another book by her. 10mo
LaLecture @Buechersuechtling Sadly, this is exactly the impression I‘ve got so far (I‘m about 80 pages in). I don‘t usually stop reading books mid-way but I‘m honestly thinking about doing it with this one. I have huge troubles with the style of writing too. 10mo
Buechersuechtling @LaLecture 😅 Phew, nice that I‘m not the only one feeling so. You know what❓ In recent years I experienced that there are some books that don‘t work for me in classical reading because they bore me but as an audiobook I really enjoy them. I have the faint idea this could be true for this book, also. 10mo

Another well-written, engaging, & uneven read from Smith. A story in 4 parts, each following a different character (tho they are all linked in some way), as they navigate life in northwest (NW) London. The writing & pacing take some getting used to: can be a little choppy, a little experimental. Once I got the rhythm, I was hooked. Lots of "Oh, yes" moments when Smith drops in something particularly insightful or true. Plus, she's funny. ⬇️

readordierachel I thought the first 2 sections were solid, the third section was pretty much perfect, and the final section took a hard left turn that I didn't really understand and could have done without. When Smith is on, she is ON, but she seems to have a kitchen sink approach and includes every thought and idea that comes to her. Some are more successful than others. ⬇️ 11mo
readordierachel Same issue I had with Swing Time, but I liked this more. OK, I'm done rambling. Tl;dr I liked it it a lot/it had some issues 11mo
batsy Great review! Her kitchen sink approach is what makes me think that I probably won't enjoy White Teeth as much now as when I first read it. But I definitely want to read this one for its themes of austerity Britain, capitalism, etc. 11mo

N-W is less of a traditional story and more of a day in the life of a section of London. The characters navigating the city are less real than the city itself, which Smith brings vividly into life in all its busy, noisy glory. When I finished the book, I had lots of questions about what was actually happening with the characters, but I felt like I could walk through NW London and recognize its rhythms. Loved some of it, hated some of it.

I don't know what it is with Smith's books and characters, but it almost feels like she doesn't want me to like and connect with her characters. In this, I felt distanced from all of the characters, so even though I kinda liked the story, I just couldn't connect with it. But still, I wanted to keep reading it, once I got going.

Suet624 Yup, you're totally in her head. 😂 2y

Hi! Happy Saturday.

We got new shelves installed last week (does anyone else love The Container Store!?) and I haven't shared them here yet. I was running out of room on my rainbow shelves under the stairs and so these were very necessary. My partner suggested I just stop buying so many books. NO WAY! Hmm. The words on each page just tumble past. So easy to read ten, now twenty pages. And yet this one took me months to finish. Dizzying swirl of words, shifting in and out of various literary devices. Less story here than White Teeth, more scattered, and an abrupt ending. Not sure what it amounts to, if anything at all. Hmm.

Stunning novel. There is something breathtaking about Zadie Smith's writing, quite possibly the way she continues to stretch and redefine her style and that is hugely evident in this book and it's continuously altering forms or maybe it's the throw away sentences which you could skim over but they hold such searing truths they demand to be acknowledged. This was an amazing read and I can't wait to pick up my next book by her!
