The Death of Mrs. Westaway
The Death of Mrs. Westaway | Ruth Ware
The highly anticipated fourth novel from Ruth Ware, The Globe and Mail and New York Times bestselling author of the In a Dark, Dark Wood, The Woman in Cabin 10, and The Lying Game. Harriet Westawaybetter known as Halmakes ends meet as a tarot reader, but she doesnt believe in the power of her trade. On a day that begins like any other, she receives a mysterious and unexpected letter bequeathing her a substantial inheritance. She realizes quickly that the letter was sent to the wrong personbut she also knows that she can use her cold-reading skills to potentially claim the money. Hal attends the funeral of the deceased and meets the family...but it dawns on her that there is something very, very wrong about this strange situation and that the inheritance is at the center of it. Full of spellbinding menace and told in Ruth Wares signature suspenseful style, this is an unputdownable thriller from the Agatha Christie of our time.

Since finishing August‘s BOTM, I have been looking forward to catching up on Ware‘s backlog! Luckily, one of my in-person book clubs chose this one for October! I could barely stand to put this one down! It‘s a definite page turner- and one that I enjoyed reading by the light of the almost #FullMoon last night! A great October read! #ChillingPhotoChallenge #Scarathlon #TeamStoker 3 pts

Never judge a book by its cover unless it‘s October and this cover sets the moody tone you‘ve been looking for in your next audio. I wasn‘t the biggest fan of Woman in Cabin 10... to be honest I wanted to toss her overboard and hoping now that I won‘t want to do the same with main character Hal.

Even before this mention of Mrs. Danvers, it familiar like Rebecca. Upon further reading, it felt like Rebeeca took place at the Thornfield of Jane Eyre. This book was a win for me. #Scarathlon #teamslaughter #ScaryscavengerHunt #blackcover #over200pages @Clwojick

Another ripping yarn from Ruth Ware. I devoured this book in a couple of days and LOVED it. It had an almost gothic feel to it with the story of the orphaned girl coming to stay with long lost relatives in a crumbling mansion. Twists and turns aplenty with a final reveal which, although I had seen coming, was skillfully written and executed. The tarot comparisons took me back to when I dabbled in my teens. By far my favourite of her books.

I'm having to read this book in the browser because I keep getting this notification when I try to open it in the kindle app. I *am* connected to the internet and I have tried restarting my phone (the totality of my technical trouble shooting knowledge 🤪). I've used Overdrive and opened the book in kindle many times previously so I'm frustrated.
Does any one have any tips?

Aimeesue Maybe delete Overdrive and redownload the app. Or it could be the library that's having connectivity issues. 3mo

The Death Of Mrs Westaway. Just got from library ♥️. I always was haunted by seeing magpies & believing the rhyme ( one for sorrow, two for joy ... )
Thinking out of the box ... she has changed the rhyme... 👍🏻 “ I‘ll change that rhyme. One for joy. One for love. One for the future.
Loving the new rhyme- I won‘t see magpies the same anymore 🤞🏻! Thankyou @Melissa_J for this recommendation

Definitely my fave of hers so far, pleased to see progress in her writing & characters. The atmosphere here was great, & I liked that while the final reveal wasn‘t a huge shocker, getting to it involved a lot of fun twists & turns, w/nothing that felt over the top. Hal was so relatable too, I felt so badly for what she went thru before & during the story. And we got only a minimal & believable “villain monologue” so I‘m happy about that 😜 4/5 ⭐️

quote
alisonrose

When Hal pushed open the gate, the hinges shrieked, a low, mournful sound that cut through the patter of the rain, and made her shiver in a way that wasn‘t just cold. There was something about the long, low note that made the skin on the back of Hal‘s neck crawl. It was as though the house itself were dying in pain.

blurb
alisonrose

So, I‘m really enjoying this one so far, definitely her strongest I‘ve read (and from what I‘ve heard, the ending is good, so hopefully that holds true)...but good Lord, poor Hal needs to see a gastroenterologist! I swear, every third paragraph, something happens to/in her stomach. It flips, falls, twists, clenches, sours, trembles, shifts, etc etc ad infinitum. Anything whatsoever that happens to or around Hal, her stomach reacts tenfold. Sheesh!

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Oh gosh!! That will drive me crazy 😜 3mo
alisonrose @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks It‘s just odd that the author couldn‘t think of any other way to imply nervousness or whatever. It‘s definitely not getting in the way of my enjoyment of the book at all, but I just keep thinking, Jeez someone give this bitch an antacid! 3mo

I‘ve read two books by Ruth Ware, one I really liked and one I didn‘t like much and felt pretty meh about. But I‘ve heard good things about her two most recent books, including from people who have pretty much hated her earlier work—so I take that as a good sign! Looking forward to a fun thriller 🔪👍🏻 #nowreading

The Death of Mrs. Westaway has mixed reviews, but I really liked this Gothic tale featuring an unexpected inheritance, a decaying old stately home, and family secrets. The story even features a surly old housekeeper in the mold of Mrs. Danvers. I am a fan of Ware‘s novels, but this one is a little different from her others, and if I had to pick I‘d name this book as my favourite. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Cathythoughts Sounds really good 👍🏻I may just have to get it ... 😊 4mo
