Remarkably Bright Creatures | Shelby Van Pelt

I love this book! I checked it out of my local Library, thinking it‘d tide me over for the rest of the week, while on vacation. I read it in a day. It‘s a fantastic tale about connections, loves, and losses. We all could use a Marcellus in our lives.

This is a creepy, dark thriller. Just when you think you know in what direction you‘re headed — wham! — Lisa Jewell takes you on a completely different course. I listened to the audiobook (which was fantastic since so much of the tale is about recording interviews for a podcast. Hearing the interviews and voices made this even better). Next time I meet someone with my same birthday, I may just keep that to myself.

If you could find out exactly how long you‘d live, would you want to know? If you choose to know, how or would you change your life? This book is terrific, insightful, thought-provoking. I couldn‘t put it down and cried through the ending. Incredible.

Mehhhh, I give it a B-. This was a creepy thriller that had potential, but I felt like it got too bogged down in backstory. I‘d rather know about the creepy stuff and why it was happening, versus formative moments from a detective‘s childhood. When it all did start to wrap up — which would have been the most interesting part — it was rushed. The author seemed more interested in telling the detective‘s origin story rather than the actual thriller.

Slow to start, but this one picks up a quarter of the way through, and then flies. Counterfeit can apply to more than handbags; it can apply to people, too. (Though high-quality fake or not, I‘d still love a Birkin bag.)

Mehhhh, I was looking forward to a Shanghai-based modern Romeo & Juliet. This unfortunately incorporated a monster, vermin, and too many unanswered questions.

Women can do anything. Ladies, do yourself a favor and read or listen to this book, immediately. Then go out and change the world! I listened to an interview with Author Bonnie Garmus, afterward. She talks about how women have come so far since the ‘50s & ‘60s. And yet, we‘re seemingly headed backward.

LitLaur Side note: Don‘t bother with the tv series. So much is changed from the book, it‘s really disappointing. 4mo

Wow, what an incredible telling of Prince Harry‘s experiences. Royal life isn‘t at all like a fairy tale — though it is certainly full of villains. Shame on the monarchy, the mostly awful royal family, the conniving staffers, and the absolutely despicable British press. I want to give Harry and Megan a hug after all this. Harry, you‘re not a spare; you‘ve been spared.

Oooh, this is a good one! A widow-turned-alcoholic finds herself in a “Rear Window” situation. Things aren‘t what they seem at Lake Greene — for anyone. This page turner kept me guessing. If you‘re looking for a quick, suspenseful read, this is it!

This is definitely a mashup of two famous murder mysteries, and a game of Clue. While the end doesn‘t tie it all up in a neat, red ribbon, I found it entertaining.

This audiobook kept me in my car longer than necessary — always a good sign. Sometimes the truth is right in front of us, sometimes the lies are. If you‘re looking for a twisty-turny whodunnit, this is a good one.

I just finished this and I‘m honestly not sure how I feel about it. It‘s a compelling thriller but such incredibly dark subject matter. I thought I was getting a thriller/romance novel. It turned into more of a horror story. Honestly, the premise is so ridiculous, it‘s not worth the time.

Love, love, loved this listen. When is self-help merely selfish? I always say I like strong women characters; this book is full of them, all flawed and fascinating. It‘s amazing the lengths people will go to, to get what they want, or to go along to get along. How far would you push or be pushed?

This is a club you definitely don‘t want to join. It‘s surprising this hasn‘t already happened somewhere (or maybe it has, and we‘re just fortunate enough *not* to know about it). I do wish things were more resolved in the end, but that‘s the way it is sometimes. I give it a 7 out of 10.

You know how you listen to or read a book, the protagonist suffers throughout childhood but then grows up, overcomes, and turns out strong and amazing? This isn‘t that. This is a terrible childhood followed by mistake, after mistake, after mistake. No one‘s held accountable for bad behavior, and no one is rewarded for good behavior, either. By the end of the book, I was just glad it was over. Good writing, but a so-so story.

This was a fantastic listen. Imagine the elementary parents‘ group at their absolute cattiest. It‘s like playing a game of telephone, with the worst possible outcome. There are laugh-out-loud moments and plenty of aggravating ones. (I‘m so glad my last child is almost out of high school, and we can leave these types of back-biting social climbers behind, for good.) This is another great read from Liane Moriarty. Highly recommend.

This was an entertaining listen, with all the twists and turns. Weak women frustrate me though, and I found myself irritated, more often then not. If you‘re looking for a strong female protagonist — this isn‘t for you. There‘s also a repetitive quirk where the lead character exclaims “Stop. Stop. Stop!” You get tired of hearing it every chapter or so (or at least I did.) This is a good book, but stops short of being a great one.

I really enjoyed this thriller, even more so than “The Guest List.” I listened to the audiobook, which, with the characters and accents, made for a really entertaining and more-suspenseful option. (Mimi‘s voice grates though.) If you need a good whodunnit, this doesn‘t disappoint!

This was absolutely the best book I‘ve listened to in a year. I found myself sitting in my car at lunch, or waiting to go in the house after work, just to find out what happens, next. You feel the closeness of the tight-knit community, it‘s collective heartbreak at losing the town sweetheart, and their desire for resolution, no matter the cost (or the truth). Strong female protagonists make me love this even more.

This was a decent listen. I‘m not sure I‘d go so far as to call it a “thriller,” when some of it felt predictable. There were also areas where I thought, “This would never happen.” That said, it was entertaining. At its core is the question: How far would you go to protect your loved one‘s child? Not all stepmoms are bad. Some just may save your life.

Rock stars, they‘re just like us! Seriously, Dave Grohl seems like such a solid guy. I feel like he‘d be a great neighbor: fun to talk with, he‘d throw great parties, has amazing & famous friends, and he‘d always pickup the tab. The experiences, friendships, heartaches and triumphs make this such a compelling listen/read. It‘s music history and a biography, and I absolutely loved it.

Pretty Things: A Novel | Janelle Brown

Pickpick

I listened to this audiobook at the beginning of a long drive, and then to/from work each day. It‘s fantastic! “Pretty Things” skewers today‘s social-media driven society, both the good and the bad. (It‘s not lost on me that Litsy is social media for books! 😁) There are plenty of twists and turns that keep the drama moving. Highly recommend.

Am I the only one who didn‘t love this? Daisy‘s so unlikable, it was hard to even finish the audiobook. I kept thinking, ‘get on with the story, already.‘ Rockstars did a lot of drugs in the ‘70s. Bandmates don‘t always get along. Neither theme felt interesting or original. I loved “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” and “Malibu Rising.” This just felt like a letdown to me.
